Film Review: Doi Boy (2023) A good story that could have been better developed [ENG - ESP]

Migration, immigrant abuse, prostitution, political repressions, disappearances, corruption and various other issues to be dealt with within this intriguing Asian film, there seems to be a good investigative credit for the making of this film, however, there are always those qualities that stand out and are unsatisfactorily noticeable when it comes to a good ongoing story.

Coming up with a good plot is easy, but maintaining it can be a pandemonium activity; like walking a tightrope at a very high altitude, where you need a lot of balance and put your mind in order not to fall on either side. Here I will try to explain the interesting and the superfluous of this film, which if it had improved in some things, I think I would have considered it with different eyes, and of course, I would have given it a much more exemplary qualification from my point of view.

Migración, abuso a los inmigrantes, prostitución, represiones políticas, desapariciones, corrupción y varios temas más a tratar dentro de esta película asiática intrigante, parece haber un buen reconocimiento investigativo para la realización de este film, sin embargo, siempre existen esas cualidades que destacan y que son insatisfactoriamente notorias cuando se trata de una buena historia en curso.

El planteamiento de una buena trama es fácil, pero mantenerla puede ser una actividad pandemónica; como caminar en cuerda floja en una altura muy alta, en la que necesitas mucho equilibrio y poner tu mente en orden para no caer por alguno de los dos lados. Aquí trataré de explicar lo interesante y lo superfluo de esta película, que si hubiera mejorado en algunas cosas, creo que la hubiera considerado con otros ojos, y por supuesto también, le hubiera dado un calificativo mucho más ejemplar desde mi punto de vista.

Technical Data

Doi Boy is a Thai suspense-drama thriller written and directed by Nontawat Numbenchapol with the assistance of Homsap Chanchana, Prasongsom Koonsombat, Prakit Laemluang and Nakorn Phopairoj. The main cast consisted of Awat Ratanapintha as Sorn, Arak Amornsupasiri as Ji, Ornjira Larmwilai as Som, Bhumibhat Thavornsiri as Wuth and Panisara Rikulsurakan as Bee.

The music part was directed by Katenan Juntimathorn and Nannue Tipitier, and cinematography by Rimvydas Leipus. The Thai-Cambodian co-production was shaped by Anti-Archive, Mobile Lab, and Neramitnung Film, and distribution was through streaming platform Netflix.

For the making of the film, production had a budget of $725,000, was presented at the Busan Film Festival in Busan, South Korea, in October, with a running time of 98 minutes, and on November 24 was released on Netflix.

Doi Boy es un thriller tailandés de suspenso y drama, escrito y dirigido por Nontawat Numbenchapol con la ayuda de Homsap Chanchana, Prasongsom Koonsombat, Prakit Laemluang y Nakorn Phopairoj. El reparto principal está constituido por Awat Ratanapintha como Sorn, Arak Amornsupasiri como Ji, Ornjira Larmwilai como Som, Bhumibhat Thavornsiri como Wuth y Panisara Rikulsurakan como Bee.

La parte de la música estuvo dirigida por Katenan Juntimathorn y Nannue Tipitier, y la fotografía por Rimvydas Leipus. Plot

Sorn is a handsome young Burmese man who flees the critical situation in his country by emigrating to Thailand and begins to look for a better life, but as an illegal immigrant, he is subjected to low-paid jobs and persecution by the police. Due to these dangerous obstacles, he decides to work in a gay bar called Doi Boy as a sex worker.

The boy, despite being straight, does his job because he is motivated to raise enough money to buy his papers and get legal status in Thailand so he can get a better job with a better salary. Everything was going normal until Sorn gets involved in a dangerous situation with one of his clients named Ji, who happens to be a policeman with a particular secret.

Ji makes Sorn a tempting offer, with which the boy can finally get his passport and some good money on the side, all this if he helps Ji disappear a human rights activist named Wuth by taking him to Burma. Sorn, between a rock and a hard place, accepts the offer, terrified to face again his past and the circumstances that made him leave his country of origin.

La trama

Sorn, es un joven apuesto birmano que huye de la situación crítica de su país emigrando a Tailandia y comienza a buscar una mejor vida, pero como inmigrante ilegal, es sometido a trabajos mal pagados y persecuciones por parte de la policía. Debido a estos peligrosos obstáculos, decide emplearse en un bar para homosexuales llamado Doi Boy desempeñándose como trabajador sexual.

El chico, a pesar de ser heterosexual, hace su trabajo ya que está motivado a reunir suficiente dinero para comprar sus papeles y tener su estatus de legal dentro de Tailandia y así poder conseguir un mejor empleo con mejor salario. Todo iba normal, hasta que Sorn es envuelto en una situación peligrosa con uno de sus clientes llamado Ji, quien resulta ser un policía con un secreto particular.

Ji le propone a Sorn una tentadora oferta, con la que el chico por fin podrá obtener su pasaporte y, además, un buen dinero a parte, todo esto si ayuda a Ji a desaparecer a un activista pro-derechos humanos llamado Wuth llevándolo a Birmania. Sorn, entre la espada y la pared, acepta la oferta, aterrado por volver a enfrentar su pasado y las circunstancias que lo hicieron abandonar su país de origen.

My opinion

As I watched the film, I realized that it was a proposal that exposed the political situation of the countries in question, through the adventures of a character who has had to submit to both realities. The stadium between corruption and civil war, is seen in a way that is both intriguing and unimpressive, giving a serious scenario for the people who find themselves in this situation.

It is noticeable that director Nontawat Numbenchapol, together with the production, did great investigative work to develop an interesting story with believable and credible characters, exposing the situation of the immigrant people, the civil war in Burma developed by armed groups, and the political activism in Thailand against a corrupt government that disappears people who try to tell the truth.

All this reality would have been perfect and exposed in a more detailed way with real eyewitness accounts in a documentary, but the film's director himself confessed that this would have been dangerous, since, without the backing of a strong entity, such a cinematographic work would never have seen the light of day.

Despite having the tools and all the documentation to tell a great and harrowing story with a strong impact; especially for the people who are subjugated to this situation, the truth is that the film fails to solidify at all. The plot is too slow; sure, the cinematography does a good job of showing the most important and iconic scenes in the film, but it takes too long to sustain a pan that was already clear from the first few seconds.

The story arc of the plot, although quite good, had some holes in its narrative that were not cleverly plugged, they were simply left there empty, waiting for the viewer (perhaps) to fill those holes with their imagination. Some details are mismatched within the story that didn't quite convince me, perhaps this is why I didn't feel fully engaged with the story, as well as presenting an unsatisfying and somewhat irrational ending.

That said, I think the performances were not too bad, of the most outstanding I dare to highlight Bhumibhat Thavornsiri as Wuth, his character; for his story, although in the film is touched very briefly, was the most endearing and identifiable of the film. The rest of the characters, except for Sorn, I couldn't connect with them as there was no setup about their stories. They didn't focus more on justifying their qualities and this prevented me from getting to know them better. I saw them as simply supporting characters needed to give more complexity to the plot and the dire situation the film exposes.

Mi opinión

A medida que iba viendo la película, me di cuenta de que se trataba de una propuesta que exponía la situación política de los países en cuestión, a través de las aventuras de un personaje que ha tenido someterse a ambas realidades. El estadio entre la corrupción y la guerra civil, se ve de una manera tanto intrigante como poco impresionante, otorgando un escenario grave para las personas que se encuentran en esta situación.

Se nota que el director Nontawat Numbenchapol, junto con la producción, hizo un gran trabajo investigativo para desarrollar una historia interesante con personajes creíbles y verosímiles, exponiendo la situación de las personas inmigrantes, la guerra civil en Birmania desarrollada por grupos armados y los activismos políticos en Tailandia, en contra de un gobierno corrupto que desaparece a las personas que intentan decir la verdad.

Toda esta realidad hubiera sido perfecta y expuesta de manera más detallada con narraciones de testigos reales en un documental, pero el propio director de la película confesó que eso hubiera sido peligroso, ya que, sin el respaldo de una entidad fuerte, dicha obra cinematográfica jamás hubiera visto la luz.

A pesar de tener las herramientas y toda la documentación para contar una gran historia estremecedora con un impacto fuerte; especialmente para las personas que están subyugadas a esta situación, lo cierto es que la película no logra solidificarse del todo. La trama es demasiado lenta; claro, la fotografía hace un buen trabajo en mostrar las escenas más importantes e icónicas de la película, pero se tarda demasiado sosteniendo un paneo que ya desde los primeros segundos estaba del todo claro.

El arco argumental de la trama, aunque bastante bueno, tenía algunos huecos en su narrativa que no fueron tapados con ingeniosidad, simplemente se dejaron allí vacíos, a esperanzas de que el espectador (quizás), cubriera esos agujeros con su imaginación. Hay detalles que son faltos de concordancia dentro de la historia que no me terminaron de convencer, tal vez fue por esto que no me sentí completamente compenetrado con la historia, además de presentar un final poco satisfactorio y un poco irracional.

Dicho esto, me parece que las actuaciones no estuvieron tan mal, de las más destacadas me atrevo a relucir la de Bhumibhat Thavornsiri como Wuth, su personaje; por su historia, aunque en la película se toca con mucha brevedad, fue lo más entrañable e identificable del film. El resto de los personajes, exceptuando a Sorn, no pude conectar con ellos ya que no había una configuración sobre sus historias. No se enfocaron más en justificar sus cualidades y esto me impidió conocerlos mejor. Los veía como simples personajes secundarios necesarios para darle más complejidad a la trama y a la situación grave que expone el film.

Conclusions

Doi Boy is not a bad thriller, but I feel it lacked more work. It exposes a social issue that is real in both Burma and Thailand, with well-established plots to give structure to this story, however, its firmness falters by not plugging those gaps within the narrative construction. As for most of the characters, I think it would have been more impactful if they had been placed in more chaotic situations, where we could learn more about them and their qualities, but they only focused on the timeline of the plot, which has no stimulating twists and turns or circumstances.

Despite not having difficulties touching the taboos that the film exposes, the director did not go further and just gave us a simple work that roots important social issues; such as the conflicts that immigrants have to subsist, accepting sex jobs where they earn better money than in common jobs, but in which they also risk their lives.

If the plot had been a little more accelerated and the script had been more solid; with more endearing characters, it would have been an excellent film, but unfortunately it was not developed as it should have been and the result was not satisfactory enough. Conclusiones

Doi Boy no es un mal thriller, pero siento que le faltó más trabajo. Expone una problemática social que es real tanto en Birmania como en Tailandia, con argumentos bien establecidos para darle estructura a esta historia, sin embargo su firmeza decae al no tapar aquellos vacíos dentro de la construcción narrativa. En cuanto a la mayoría de los personajes, creo que hubiese sido más impactante si los hubiesen colocado en situaciones más caóticas, en las que podríamos conocer más de ellos y sus cualidades, pero solo se centraron en la línea temporal de la trama, la cual no tiene ni giros ni circunstancias estimulantes.

A pesar de no tener dificultades para tocar los tabúes que expone la película, el director no fue más allá y solo nos dio un trabajo simple que arraiga problemáticas sociales importantes; como los conflictos que tienen los inmigrantes para poder subsistir, aceptando trabajos sexuales donde ganan mejor dinero que en los trabajos comunes, pero en los que también arriesgan sus vidas.

Si la trama hubiese sido un poco más acelerada y el guion hubiera ostentado más solidez; con personajes más entrañables, hubiese sido una excelente película, pero lastimosamente no se desarrolló como es debido y el resultado no fue lo suficientemente satisfactorio.
