Folk horror is a horror genre that I have always liked, from video games, poems, fiction stories, and even movies, it is one of the most intriguing and strange things you can get; as it shows you an unknown and inhospitable world in the outskirts of the warm civilization, taking us to societies with unknown cultures and cosmogonies different from ours.
The Spanish film I am about to introduce to you is a classic example of everything that happens in a 'folk horror' environment, where there is a mystery, disturbing pagan beliefs, customs, traditions, and a series of behaviors on the part of the locals that make you feel uncomfortable.
The theme of death is quite crucial, the protagonists become gradually enveloped in those beliefs that distort their reality. The last act conceived is madness or lack of logic as we have executed it, swirling in a world where thoughts are mitigated by intangible and hostile forces.

El folk horror es un género de terror que siempre me ha gustado, desde videojuegos, poemas, relatos de ficción y hasta películas, es una de las cosas más intrigantes y extrañas que te puedes conseguir; ya que te muestras un mundo desconocido e inhóspito en las afueras de la cálida civilización, llevándonos a sociedades con culturas desconocidas y cosmogonías totalmente diferente a la nuestra.
La película española que estoy por presentarles, es un ejemplo clásico de todo lo que ocurre en un ambiente ‘folk horror’, donde hay misterio, creencias paganas perturbadoras, costumbres, tradiciones y una serie de comportamientos por parte de los locales que te hacen sentir incómodo.
El tema de la muerte es bastante crucial, los protagonistas quedan envueltos paulatinamente en aquellas creencias que distorsionan su realidad. El último acto concebido es la locura o la falta de lógica tal y como la hemos ejecutado, arremolinados en un mundo donde los pensamientos son mitigados por fuerzas intangibles y hostiles.

O Corpo Aberto, is a Galician film directed by Ángeles Huerta and scripted by the same director together with Daniel García, based on the homonymous story by Xosé Luis Méndez Ferrín; one of the greatest representatives of Galician literature. The main cast is composed of Victoria Guerra, Tamar Novas, María Vázquez, Federico Pérez Rey, and José Fidalgo. The film is a co-production between Spain and Portugal, with production companies OlloVivo Producións, Fasten Films, Cinemate, and RTVE, among others.
At first, you will feel in suspense for the series of oddities you will see in the film, but the story begins to take shape, in a subtle and somewhat imperceptible way, and you will begin to deduce certain things, however, the film will not allow you to discover it easily.
We are in Spain in 1909, in Galicia, near the border with Portugal. A teacher is assigned to a small rural village called 'Lobosandaus', a place very similar to director M. Night Shyamalan's "The Village". This Galician village is a place with archaic customs, strange traditions, and beliefs beyond the bounds of reason.
The professor is a character with a reserved mentality, but at the same time docile to his passions. He allows himself to be easily involved in his desires and we will often witness this manifestation with women of the village. Gradually, his interest is directed to Dorinda; a villager with great beauty and a passionate secret.
O Corpo Aberto, es una película gallega dirigida por Ángeles Huerta y guionizada por el mismo director junto con Daniel García, basándose en el relato homónimo de Xosé Luis Méndez Ferrín; uno de los mayores representantes de la literatura gallega. El reparto principal está compuesto por Victoria Guerra, Tamar Novas, María Vázquez, Federico Pérez Rey y José Fidalgo. La película es una co-producción entre España y Portugal, con las productoras OlloVivo Producións, Fasten Films, Cinemate, RTVE, entre otras.
Al principio te sentirás en suspenso por la serie de rarezas que verás en la película, pero la historia comienza a tomar forma, de una manera sutil y algo imperceptible, y empezarás a deducir ciertas cosas, sin embargo el filme no te permitirá descubrirlo fácilmente.
Estamos en la España de 1909, en Galicia, cerca de la frontera con Portugal. Un profesor es destinado a un pequeño pueblo rural llamado ‘Lobosandaus’, un lugar muy parecido a “The Village” del director M. Night Shyamalan. Esta aldea gallega es un sitio con costumbres arcaicas, tradiciones extrañas y creencias fuera de los límites de la razón.
El profesor es un personaje con una mentalidad reservada, pero que a la vez es dócil ante sus pasiones. Se deja envolver con facilidad por sus deseos y muchas veces presenciaremos esta manifestación con mujeres del pueblo. Paulatinamente, su interés se dirige a Dorinda; una aldeana con una gran belleza y un secreto pasional.
Things in the town are twisted by the unexpected suicide of Mauro, one of the most beloved men in the place. This event unleashes an entity or spirit that begins to search for a host body to finish his goals in life. Soon, the darkness is taking over the protagonist, allowing his sexual desires to surface until reaching a point of no return.
What I liked most about this film is the way it is presented. It doesn't have many dialogues that explain with certainty what is going on, so the viewer must make an effort to put the pieces together through the scenes. In my opinion, the film seemed very pretentious, as it seemed to be directed only to a particular audience.
The film is very slow and many people will get bored with it; that is a fact. To a less keen eye, the sequence of images that are presented could be tiring and numbing, because within the narrative arc, there is not much dialogue that specifies what is going on, and many people will not understand.
For my part, I had a hard time trying to fit the pieces together and trying to understand the changing behavior of the characters. I understood that it was all for a supernatural cause; well, thanks to the few dialogues that are collected, we will understand what is going on.
Las cosas en el pueblo se tuercen por el inesperado suicidio de Mauro, uno de los hombres más queridos del lugar. Este hecho libera una entidad o espíritu que comienza a buscar un cuerpo anfitrión para terminar con sus objetivos en vida. Pronto, la oscuridad se va apoderando del protagonista, permitiendo que sus deseos sexuales afloren hasta llegar a un punto sin retorno.
Lo que más me gustó de esta película, es la manera en como está presentada. No tiene muchos diálogos que expliquen con certeza lo que está pasando, por lo que el espectador deberá hacer un esfuerzo para juntar las piezas a través de las escenas. En mi opinión el filme me pareció muy pretencioso, pues pareciera dirigido únicamente a un público en particular.
La película es muy lenta y muchas personas se aburrirán de ella; eso es un hecho. Para un ojo poco agudo, la secuencia de imágenes que se presentan podrían fatigar y adormecer, pues dentro del arco narrativo no hay mucho diálogo que especifique lo que está pasando, y muchas personas no van a entender.
Por mi parte, me costó mucho tratar de encajar las piezas y tratar de comprender el comportamiento cambiante de los personajes. Entendí que todo era por una causa sobrenatural; pues, gracias a los pocos diálogos que se recolectan, entenderemos lo que está pasando.
I also liked that it was a fresh story, with a different vision of life and death. Rural photography is fascinating to me, especially if you add that magical and gloomy touch. Although here you will not find the typical style of the horror genre in movies, you will find a lot of mystery, intrigue, and suspense; with a passionate and deadly drama at the same time, which dominates much of the plot.
I began to understand many things already in the last act, slowly savoring the arrival of the twists. People who are not what they seem and entities that are there for a specific purpose.
In the end, I understood that everything was caused by the death of passion, but in Lobosandaus, death is not the end, the film tries to explain that the dead can coexist with the living, and they are real as seeing a person himself. I liked that drama that plays with your mind and makes you work, but on some occasions, I felt it stultifying like trying to prove something insistently.
As I said before, I liked how the film was presented, however, there were times when I loathed it despite having a very detailed narrative. I don't know how to explain that feeling, it's like when you're eating a lot of one type of food and suddenly you get tired of it and repudiate it, that same thing happened to me; I was tired of witnessing the same slow sequence, the only thing that saved me was the ending; which I confess was shocking.
Me gustó también que fuera una historia fresca, con una visión diferente de la vida y la muerte. La fotografía rural para mí es fascinante, sobre todo si le agregan ese toque mágico y lúgubre. Aunque aquí no vas a encontrar el típico estilo del género de terror en las películas, si vas a hallar mucho misterio, intriga y suspenso; con un drama pasional y mortal a la vez, que va dominando gran parte de la trama.
Comencé a comprender muchas cosas ya en el último acto, saboreando lentamente la llegada de los giros. Personas que no son lo que parecen y entidades que están allí con un propósito específico.
Al final comprendí que todo era causa por muerte pasional, pero en Lobosandaus, la muerte no es el fin, la película trata de explicar que los muertos pueden convivir con los vivos, y son reales como ver una persona misma. Me gustó ese drama que juega con tu mente y que te hace trabajar, pero en algunas ocasiones lo sentí atosigante como intentando probar algo con insistencia.
Como he dicho antes, me gustó como estuvo presentada la película, sin embargo hubo ocasiones en que la aborrecí a pesar de tener una narrativa muy detallada. No sé como explicar esa sensación, es como cuando estás comiendo mucho un solo tipo de comida y de repente te cansas de eso y lo repudias, eso mismo me pasó; estaba cansado de presenciar la misma secuencia lenta, lo único que me salvó fue el final; el cual confieso fue impactante.
Without more to add, although it is a very interesting film, it seems like a cult work with a small number of followers. It has its interesting things, I think they are well executed, but it reaches a point where it becomes tiresome. There are movies with slow directions that are more amazing and jaw-dropping all the time. Maybe many will like it, but I wouldn't call it a sensational movie.
Sin más que agregar, aunque es un filme muy interesante, parece una obra de culto con una cantidad de seguidores escasa. Tiene sus cosas interesantes, me parece que están bien ejecutadas, pero llega a un punto en que se vuelve fatigoso. Hay películas con direcciones lentas que son más sorprendentes y que te dejan con la boca abierta todo el tiempo. Quizás a muchos les gustará, pero yo no la calificaría como una película sensacional.
I haven't seen it yet, I haven't seen the trailer, but the synopsis calls my attention, I hope I like it. I want to get it in Galician, I found it dubbed in Spanish.
I was also looking for it in Galician, but I gave up and decided to watch the dubbing. Maybe if you like it, it's a dramatic story with a disturbing background.
