The Old Guard (2020) // Movie Review 🎥🎥
So, "The Old Guard" dropped on Netflix back in 2020, and honestly, it really got people talking. It's based on a graphic novel, which you can kinda tell from the cool vibe, but it's not your typical flashy superhero flick. It felt fresh, a bit gritty, and surprisingly deep for an action movie about folks who just don't die.
What really hit home for most folks? Charlize Theron as Andy. Seriously, she's just incredible. You know how she nails those intense action roles? Well, here she's playing this super old warrior, Andromache of Scythia (try saying that five times fast!). You can practically feel the centuries of fighting and loss weighing on her. She's not just doing cool stunts – though she does plenty of those! – she's got this profound weariness in her eyes that makes you believe she's seen it all. She's the absolute heart of the film.
And the whole idea behind it? So cool! These immortals don't know why they're immortal or when their luck might suddenly run out. That uncertainty adds this really interesting, almost sad layer to their lives. Plus, the idea that their actions, even the bloody ones, have been subtly shaping history for the better? That just gives everything more meaning than just "punch bad guys, save the day."
The cast surrounding Charlize is fantastic too. Kiki Layne's character, Nile, is our eyes into this wild world. She's the newbie immortal, and watching her come to terms with it is really compelling. But honestly, the real scene-stealers for many were Joe and Nicky, played by Marwan Kenzari and Luca Marinelli. Their relationship, built over centuries, feels so incredibly genuine and loving. It's a beautiful piece of representation that just felt right, and apparently, the comic's creator, Greg Rucka, really pushed for it to be authentic, which is awesome. The whole team just feels like a real, messed-up, deeply loyal family.
You want to know about the action? Let me tell you, it's good. Gina Prince-Bythewood, the director, really nailed making those fights feel real and impactful, not just a bunch of flashy moves. When they're throwing down, you seriously feel every single punch and kick. It's brutal, for sure, but in a way that's easy to follow, letting you truly appreciate how these immortals fight.
But this isn't just about cool brawls. Beyond the action, the movie actually gives you something to think about. It dives into some pretty heavy stuff, like what it really means to live forever, the weight of carrying all that history, finding your purpose, and even leaving a legacy behind. This isn't just another throwaway popcorn flick; it's got genuine soul. And for the most part, it's really well-paced – keeps you hooked without dragging.
Now, it's not perfect, right? No movie is. The bad guy, some pharmaceutical CEO trying to snag their secret, felt a little... well, generic. He's just your typical greedy villain, not super complex. And some parts of the story, if you've watched a lot of action or superhero movies, might feel a bit predictable. You're like, "Yep, saw that coming." And maybe a tiny handful of the special effects weren't top-tier, but honestly, those are pretty minor nitpicks.
So, the bottom line? "The Old Guard" is a really solid, enjoyable action movie. It's actually one of the best I have seen of Charlize Theron among Snow White and the rest. The film got me hooked on every scene along the movie. I give it a rating of 7/10. It was absolutely a satisfying watch for me and I believe it will be the same for others who are yet to watch it as well.
I fell in love with the Old Guard when I first saw it few years. I very much enjoyed Charlize The Ron's character as Andy.
I saw the sequel about a week ago and I'm not sure I understand how I felt about it.
This is much more better than the sequel.
It reminds me Tomb Raider. Greetings!
Yeah, you could say that. Thanks for dropping by
