Road House (2024) | Movie Review

I wish I had something more positive to share for my first ever review, but unfortunately I do not.

There are many film reboots from the 80's that have gone well but in my personal opinion Road House is not one of them.

For anyone that hasn't seen the original there is some slight variation, in the original Dalton was a legendary Door Safe whereas in the reboot the main protagonist playing Dalton is Jake Gyllenhaal and he's an ex cage fighter.

The story line is similar to the 80's version, but again some variation. On the positive side there is lots of action to enjoy, and quite a few amusing clips, most of which involve a surprising Conor McGregor the MMA fighter, who plays a significant villain within the storyline!

For anyone that has ever watched MMA it is not surprising that Conor plays a violent lunatic character so well, but what is surprising is that personally I found his character much more enjoyable that Jake Gyllenhaal's character Dalton, which was really a bit wooden in comparison.

If you are looking for a movie that is easy viewing, has plenty of action, and a fair amount of violence with the odd laugh then this is right up your street but if you are hoping for a movie that can live up to the swagger and frankly sublime soundtrack of the original 80's version then this is definitely not it.

The one thing that is really hard to forget about this movie, apart from Conor McGregor's over the top performances is the bizarre grin that Jake Gyllenhaal's Dalton is wearing half the time throughout the movie, it ends up being his characters trademark!

I felt the remake was pretty stupid as well. It lacked any sort of compelling backstory. I mean, it's not like the original was a work of storytelling art but at least it wasn't just trying to be silly. This might end up being McGregor's one and only film though, and I think that is a very good thing.

Understand exactly where you are coming from, it almost felt like there was no storyline at all, mostly! Yeah McGregor as an actor is definitely a bridge too far, well hopefully... but then look how well Arnold Schwarzenegger did, and he wasn't exactly a master of dialog was he!?

Arnold never was a good actor, he was just really big. Conor is actually quite a small person. I get that he is deadly, but he is smaller than most teenagers so he would never be able to have that sort of Arnold appeal.
