I've watched a lot of movies over the years but it's strange, even though this movie has been around for a decade somehow i've only found myself watching it recently.. very glad i did though.

Expectations for a lower budget thriller movie can be limited, so i didn't get my hopes up initially but was pleasantly surprised by how much i enjoyed the movie, it's genuinely got a lot going for it!

He visto muchas películas a lo largo de los años, pero es extraño, aunque esta película lleva ya una década en cartelera, por alguna razón no la he visto hasta hace poco... pero me alegro mucho de haberlo hecho.

Las expectativas para una película de suspense de bajo presupuesto pueden ser limitadas, así que al principio no tenía muchas esperanzas, pero me sorprendió gratamente lo mucho que disfruté de la película, ¡realmente tiene mucho que ofrecer!

The movie centers on David, a mysterious and impressively charming former soldier who is played by Dan Stevens. He arrives at the Peterson family home claiming to have been a friend of their son, who died in Iraq. David is initially welcomed but quickly becomes a source of unease as a series of violent incidents take place one after another, all of which appear connected to his presence. Tension slowly builds throughout the story with a cautious but deliberate reveal of David’s true nature, which kept me in a constant state of suspense wondering what David was going to do next, and when the family was going to realise exactly who they had living under their roof.

The lead actor Dan Stevens has an immense performance, the charm and charisma he manages to portray as the lead character David is superb but the really clever bit is how he manages to move his character through the gears and also be both seductive or deeply menacing at the flick of a switch. One minute he's being a sympathetic ear for one of the Peterson family kids, and the next he is tearing a bunch of school bullies apart in a bar fight!

La película se centra en David, un misterioso y encantador exsoldado interpretado por Dan Stevens. Llega a la casa de la familia Peterson afirmando haber sido amigo de su hijo, que murió en Irak. Al principio, David es bien recibido, pero pronto se convierte en motivo de inquietud cuando se producen una serie de incidentes violentos, todos ellos aparentemente relacionados con su presencia. La tensión va aumentando poco a poco a lo largo de la historia con una revelación cautelosa pero deliberada de la verdadera naturaleza de David, lo que me mantuvo en un estado constante de suspense preguntándome qué iba a hacer David a continuación y cuándo se daría cuenta la familia de quién vivía exactamente bajo su techo.

El actor principal, Dan Stevens, ofrece una interpretación magnífica. El encanto y el carisma que consigue transmitir en su papel del protagonista, David, son soberbios, pero lo realmente inteligente es cómo consigue hacer evolucionar a su personaje y ser a la vez seductor y profundamente amenazador en un abrir y cerrar de ojos. En un momento está escuchando con simpatía a uno de los hijos de la familia Peterson y, al siguiente, está destrozando a un grupo de matones del colegio en una pelea de bar.

The movie does number of things rather well. The synergy of thriller, action, and to some extent horror is all knitted together fairly seamlessly. Once David breaks cover and is outed the military comes looking for him and things heat up pretty quickly. The supporting cast should really be commended for their contributions with special mention going to Maika Monroe who delivers a strong performance as Anna, the skeptical teenage daughter with growing suspicion of David contributing much to the film’s tension.

There are obviously some trade offs, this is no blockbuster, the plot line is quite predictable, the only guessing game half way through is how badly things are going to go for everyone in Davids blast range once he sails off the deep end. Some of the action sequences are maybe a bit overboard as well, but i'm willing to accept it as a few rough edges that add to the overall charm of the movie.

La película hace varias cosas bastante bien. La sinergia entre el thriller, la acción y, en cierta medida, el terror, se entrelaza de forma bastante fluida. Una vez que David sale de su escondite y es descubierto, el ejército viene a buscarlo y las cosas se calientan rápidamente. El reparto secundario merece una mención especial por su contribución, en particular Maika Monroe, que ofrece una sólida interpretación como Anna, la escéptica hija adolescente que sospecha cada vez más de David y contribuye en gran medida a la tensión de la película.

Obviamente, hay algunas desventajas: no es una superproducción, la trama es bastante predecible y lo único que se puede adivinar a mitad de la película es lo mal que les va a ir a todos los que se encuentren en el radio de acción de David una vez que pierda los estribos. Algunas de las secuencias de acción quizá sean un poco exageradas, pero estoy dispuesto a aceptarlas como pequeños defectos que se suman al encanto general de la película.

One thing i've failed to mention so far, which was one of the biggest surprises throughout the movie was the sountdrack. The movies 1980s-style synth score by Steve Moore is a major asset, enhancing the atmosphere and setting the tone for some scenes in a superb fashion. It's a kind of retro-futuristic sound that complements the movie very well. The next day after watching the movie i ended up hunting down the Soundtrack on Youtube and put it in the background playing while i was at work in the Office. For my own personal taste the music is pretty good standalone, never mind with the movie.

Una cosa que no he mencionado hasta ahora, y que fue una de las mayores sorpresas de toda la película, fue la banda sonora. La música sintética al estilo de los años 80 compuesta por Steve Moore es uno de los principales atractivos, ya que realza la atmósfera y crea el ambiente perfecto para algunas escenas de una manera magnífica. Es un tipo de sonido retrofuturista que complementa muy bien la película. Al día siguiente de ver la película, acabé buscando la banda sonora en YouTube y la puse de fondo mientras trabajaba en la oficina. Para mi gusto personal, la música es bastante buena por sí sola, sin importar la película.
