Midnight Mass es una serie de terror psicológico que salió el año 2021, creada y dirigida por Mike Flanagan, la serie se sumerge profundamente en los dilemas de la fe, la redención y la naturaleza humana. A lo largo de siete episodios, Mike (conocido por otras series como The Haunting of Hill House y The Haunting of Bly Manor) nos transporta a un pequeño y aislado pueblo pesquero llamado Crockett Island, un lugar que parece detenido en el tiempo, donde los habitantes sobreviven entre la rutina, la culpa y la esperanza.

La historia comienza con el regreso de Riley, un adulto joven que ha pasado varios años en la cárcel tras causar la muerte de una joven en un accidente de tráfico bajo los efectos del alcohol. Cargado de remordimiento y vacío espiritual, Riley regresa a Crockett Island buscando una segunda oportunidad, aunque pronto descubrirá que su hogar no es el mismo que dejó atrás.

La llegada de un "nuevo" sacerdote, el Padre Paul Hill, marca un punto de inflexión en la comunidad: con su elocuencia, compasión y misteriosa energía, logra reavivar la fe de los habitantes del pueblo. Sin embargo, los particulares "milagros" que comienzan a ocurrir entre personas de la comunidad, pronto se tornan inquietantes, revelando un trasfondo mucho más oscuro que pondrá a prueba las creencias y la moralidad de todos.

Desde el punto de vista estético, Midnight Mass es una obra visualmente gotica y poética. Mike combina planos prolongados, iluminación tenue y una paleta de colores fríos que evocan melancolía y aislamiento. El ambiente marítimo, con su constante neblina, sus casas de madera desgastada y el sonido incesante de las olas, actúa como un personaje más: silencioso, opresivo y testigo de la decadencia espiritual del pueblo. La serie se mueve entre la belleza y el horror con una elegancia opaca, alternando momentos de calma contemplativa con estallidos de violencia.

Uno de los mayores logros de Midnight Mass es su guion: extenso, denso y profundamente filosófico (mi caracteristica favorita de la serie, los planteamientos filosóficos). Los diálogos son largos, un poco teatrales, pero nunca innecesarios, cada conversación es una reflexión sobre la fe, la muerte, la culpa y el sentido de la existencia. Los personajes, lejos de ser simples arquetipos, son retratos complejos de la humanidad en busca de respuestas.

Por ejemplo, Riley incrédulo y atormentado, representa la razón frente al dogma, el Padre Paul la pasión de la fe que se desborda hacia la obsesión, Bev Keane la fanática religiosa que manipula las escrituras para justificar su crueldad y Erin Greene, símbolo de esperanza y reconciliación con la vida.

Personalmente, considero que Midnight Mass es una obra distinta y bastante profunda, cuando empecé a verla no esperaba encontrar lo que encontré. No busca asustar con sustos fáciles, sino con la inquietud que produce el fanatismo que termina convirtiendose en una fe ciega. Es una historia que te hace reflexionar sobre hasta qué punto las creencias pueden elevarnos o destruirnos. La serie no se posiciona en contra de la fe, sino contra su ceguera: esa fe que deja de cuestionar, que confunde lo divino con lo monstruoso, que convierte el sacrificio en dogma y la obediencia en virtud absoluta.

Para mí el cuestionamiento central de la sería es el siguiente: ¿puede la fe ser cegadora? Midnight Mass responde con una afirmación fuerte: Sí, la fe puede ser un faro que guía, pero también una llama que consume. Cuando se confunde la voz de Dios con la del ego o la desesperación, la fe deja de iluminar y comienza a oscurecer. En Crockett Island, los milagros se transforman en maldiciones y la salvación en condena.

En definitiva, Midnight Mass es una obra que nos invita a mirar hacia adentro y preguntarnos en qué creemos realmente, y si aquello en lo que creemos nos acerca a la luz... o nos hunde.

It's been a while since I've written a review, and what better way to get back in the game than with a horror show in honor of “Spooky season”? 👻

Midnight Mass is a psychological horror series that came out in 2021, created and directed by Mike Flanagan. The series delves deeply into the dilemmas of faith, redemption, and human nature. Over seven episodes, Mike (known for other series such as The Haunting of Hill House and The Haunting of Bly Manor) transports us to a small, isolated fishing village called Crockett Island, a place that seems frozen in time, where the inhabitants survive amid routine, guilt and hope.

The story begins with the return of Riley, a young adult who has spent several years in prison after causing the death of a young woman in a drunk driving accident. Burdened with remorse and spiritual emptiness, Riley returns to Crockett Island seeking a second chance, but he soon discovers that his home is not the same as he left it.

The arrival of a “new” priest, Father Paul Hill, marks a turning point in the community: with his eloquence, compassion and mysterious energy, he manages to rekindle the faith of the townspeople. However, the peculiar “miracles” that begin to occur among the community soon become disturbing, revealing a much darker undercurrent that will test everyone's beliefs and morality.

From an aesthetic point of view, Midnight Mass is a visually gothic and poetic work. Mike combines long shots, dim lighting, and a cold color palette that evokes melancholy and isolation. The maritime setting, with its constant fog, weathered wooden houses, and the incessant sound of the waves, acts as another character: silent, oppressive, and witness to the spiritual decline of the town. The series moves between beauty and horror with an opaque elegance, alternating moments of contemplative calm with bursts of violence.

One of Midnight Mass's greatest achievements is its script: extensive, dense, and deeply philosophical (my favorite feature of the series, the philosophical approach). The dialogues are long, a bit theatrical, but never unnecessary; each conversation is a reflection on faith, death, guilt and the meaning of existence. The characters, far from being simple archetypes, are complex portraits of humanity in search of answers.

For example, Riley, incredulous and tormented, represents reason versus dogma; Father Paul represents the passion of faith that spills over into obsession; Bev Keane represents the religious fanatic who manipulates the scriptures to justify her cruelty; and Erin Greene represents hope and reconciliation with life.

Personally, I consider Midnight Mass to be a unique and quite profound work. When I started watching it, I didn't expect to find what I found. It doesn't seek to scare with cheap thrills, but rather with the unease produced by fanaticism that ends up turning into blind faith. It's a story that makes you reflect on the extent to which beliefs can elevate or destroy us. The series does not take a stand against faith, but against its blindness: that faith that stops questioning, that confuses the divine with the monstrous, that turns sacrifice into dogma and obedience into absolute virtue.

For me, the central question of the series is this: can faith be blinding? Midnight Mass responds with a strong affirmation: Yes, faith can be a guiding light, but it can also be a consuming flame. When the voice of God is confused with that of the ego or despair, faith ceases to illuminate and begins to obscure. On Crockett Island, miracles become curses and salvation becomes damnation.

Ultimately, Midnight Mass is a work that invites us to look inward and ask ourselves what we truly believe in and whether what we believe brings us closer to the light... or drags us down.
