I bring you a recommendation of a series that, in just one week, I watched all three seasons, because I simply needed to know what the heck was going on.

This series is called FROM, a weird name and that. The truth is that the name carries a lot of meaning, because if you research, in English FROM is a preposition that indicates the “point of origin” or the “beginning of something”.

This series contains horror, psychological horror in the style of Stephen King, science fiction and mystery. It is a series that contains violent scenes and some gore. It develops with a disturbing tone and may remind some of the uncanny valley (for those who do not know what this is, I will explain a little later) in which theories begin to be generated in the viewer from chapter one, especially for those who pay attention.

In short, the series begins with dusk in a town, while the sheriff rings the bell to announce that everyone must enter their homes, the reason for this makes sense when from the same forest begin to come out “people” that, although very well dressed, their style looked old and their smiling faces only generated fear and disquiet. A girl and her mother are victims of one of these “beings” who introduced herself as the girl's grandmother and made her open the window; the result: a total massacre.

Now, what did I mean by Unsettling Valley? It is a theory created by Professor Masahiro Mori in 1970, as a way to explain the curve of human emotions in the area of robotics. This term talks about how when the appearance of something closely resembles human appearance, but not quite, we feel a premonition of fear or repulsion. This is because our brain knows that, no matter how human it looks, it is not. This explains the fear or discomfort some people feel with clowns, realistic mannequins or dogs that look human. Some theorize that the Uncanny Valley is an evolutionary process of alertness when we lived in caves, coexisting with human-like beings. The series plays with some of this, though not explicitly mentioned.

The main characters include a family traveling in their camper on a journey across the U.S., Tabitha and Jim Matthews, their teenage daughter Julie and their youngest son Ethan. The couple's established travel route is interrupted by a fallen tree midway, and although Jim finds a way out, he and his family end up stranded in town with no apparent way out. That same day, at nightfall, they end up facing these creatures, although they manage to get out alive thanks to the sheriff and some talismans that he himself found years ago when he first arrived in town. Later it is discovered that all those who ended up in that town saw that same tree in different parts of the United States.

This family did not arrive alone to the town, because in another car and in the opposite direction came Jade Herrera, an eccentric and wealthy software developer, who being a man of science and technology would be questioning from the beginning the “functioning of the town”.

These new residents along with Sheriff Boyd would be in charge of not only discovering a way out of town, but also what these creatures are, what the town is and why they ended up there. Even if what they discover puts their lives, sanity and even souls at risk.

It should be noted that the series goes into philosophical and even metaphysical territories, as the series raises the theory of Schrödinger's cat, conspiracies and even an experiment on humans as in The Truman Show, but soon begin prophetic dreams and visions and that the people seem to be out of linear time.

All this from the hand of Jade as a software developer and Jim as an engineer, who use the laws of physics and mathematics to find the way out or a logical explanation of where they are, posing various theories and hypotheses about alternate realities, a simulation, limbo or if they are just dead without knowing it.

The unfavorable points I find to the series is that the first season, it moves at a bit of a slow pace. This improves with respect to the second and third season, even so there is too much content and information, so theorizing becomes recurrent. It has its peak moments, especially when they face these creatures and everything gets ugly with them.

Another unfavorable point is the almost null interaction between certain characters. So separately or in pairs they set out to discover the truth. Each one discovers something new and chilling about the monsters, the town and why they are there, but they complete the pieces of the puzzle separately and as a viewer it can be tedious. Which makes us question why they don't just all get together and say what they discovered to find out the truth, all at once. I feel that this puts the expert to put the pieces of the puzzle together for oneself and I tell you it is not easy.

As a piece of advice, if you are going to watch it, watch chapter one in detail, because the creators themselves say that chapter answers a lot and because there is a certain detail that I overlooked when I watched the first chapter and when I watched it again on the recommendation of the creators, I managed to realize it, I hope you did too.

Les traigo una recomendación de una serie que, en tan solo una semana, vi las tres temporadas, porque simplemente necesitaba saber qué rayos pasaba.

Esta serie se llama FROM, un nombre raro y que, si lo traducimos al español, a la mayoría le dirá que significa “de” o “desde”. La verdad es que el nombre carga mucho significado, pues si se investiga, en inglés FROM es una preposición que indica el “punto de origen” o el “inicio de algo”.

Esta serie contiene terror, terror psicológico al estilo de Stephen King, ciencia ficción y misterio. Es una serie que contiene escenas violentas y algo de gore. Se desarrolla con un tono inquietante y puede que a algunos les recuerde, valga la redundancia al valle inquietante (para los que no saben qué es esto, un poco más adelante lo explico) en la que las teorías empiezan a generarse en el espectador desde el capítulo uno, sobre todo para quien presta atención.

En resumen, la serie inicia con el anochecer en un pueblo, mientras el sheriff suena la campana para anunciar que todos deben entrar a sus casas, el porqué de esto cobra sentido cuando del mismo bosque empiezan a salir “personas” que, aunque muy bien vestidas, su estilo se veía antiguo y sus rostros sonrientes solo generaban miedo e inquietud. Una niña y su madre son víctimas de uno de estos “seres” que se presentó como la abuela de la niña e hizo que esta abriera la ventana; el resultado: una total masacre.

Ahora, ¿a qué me refería con Valle inquietante? Es una teoría creada por el profesor Masahiro Mori en 1970, como una forma de explicar la curva de las emociones humanas en el área de la robótica. Este término habla de que cuando la apariencia de algo se asemeja mucho a la apariencia humana, pero no del todo, sentimos un presentimiento de miedo o repulsión. Esto se debe a que nuestro cerebro sabe que, por más humana que parezca, no lo es. Esto explica el miedo o la incomodidad que algunas personas sienten con los payasos, maniquíes realistas o perros que parecen humanos. Algunos teorizan que el Valle inquietante es un proceso evolutivo de alerta cuando vivíamos en las cavernas, conviviendo con seres que parecían humanos. La serie juega con algo de esto, aunque no mencionado explícitamente.

Entre los personajes principales se encuentra una familia que viajaba en su camper en una travesía por EE. UU, Tabitha y Jim Matthews, su hija adolescente Julie y su hijo menor Ethan. La ruta de viaje establecida por la pareja es interrumpida por un árbol caído a medio camino, y aunque Jim encuentra salida, él y su familia terminan varados en el pueblo sin aparente salida. Ese mismo día, al anochecer, se terminan enfrentando a esas criaturas, aunque logran salir vivos gracias al sheriff y unos talismanes que este mismo encontró años atrás cuando llegó por primera vez al pueblo. Más adelante se descubre que todos quienes terminaron en ese pueblo vieron ese mismo árbol en distintas partes de EE. UU.

Esta familia no llegó sola al pueblo, pues en otro carro y en dirección contraía venía Jade Herrera, un excéntrico y rico desarrollador de software, que al ser un hombre de ciencia y tecnología se vendría cuestionando desde el principio el “funcionamiento del pueblo”.

Estos nuevos residentes junto al sheriff Boyd se encargarían de no solo descubrir una salida del pueblo, sino también de que son esas criaturas, que es el pueblo y por justamente ellos terminaron ahí. Aunque lo que descubran ponga en riesgo sus vidas, corduras y hasta almas.

Hay que destacar que la serie se adentra en territorios filosóficos y hasta metafísicos, pues es la serie se plantea la teoría del gato de Schrödinger, conspiraciones e incluso un experimento en humanos como en The Truman Show, pero pronto empiezan los sueños y visiones proféticas y que el pueblo parece estar fuera del tiempo lineal.

Todo esto de la mano de Jade como desarrollador de software y Jim como ingeniero, quienes utilizan las leyes de la física y las matemáticas para encontrar la salida o una explicación lógica de donde están, planteándose diversas teorías e hipótesis sobre realidades alternas, una simulación, el limbo o si simplemente están muertos sin saberlo.

Los puntos desfavorables que le encuentro a la serie es que la primera temporada, avanza a un ritmo un poco lento. Esto mejora con respecto a la segunda y tercera temporada, aun así hay demasiado contenido e información, por lo que teorizar se vuelve lo recurrente. Tiene sus momentos cumbres, sobre todo cuando se enfrentan a estas criaturas y todo se pone feo con ellas.

Otro punto desfavorable es la casi nula interacción entre ciertos personajes. Pues por separado o en pareja se proponen a descubrir la verdad. Cada quien descubre algo nuevo y escalofriantes de los monstruos, el pueblo y por qué ellos están ahí, pero completan las piezas del rompecabezas por separado y a uno como espectador le puede resultar tedioso. Lo que nos hace cuestionar por qué simplemente no se reúnen todos y dicen lo que descubrieron para saber la verdad, de una vez. Siento que esto pone al expertador a armar las piezas del rompecabezas por uno mismo y les digo que no es están sencillo.

Como consejo les digo que, si la van a ver, vean en detalle el capítulo uno, pues los mismos creadores dicen que ese capítulo responde a mucho y porque hay cierto detalle que pase por alto, cuando vi el primer capítulo y cuando lo volví a ver por recomendación de los creadores me logré dar cuenta, espero que ustedes también.
