Recommendation Defending Jacob: When a Son Is Accused of a Heinous Crime [Eng/Esp]

Hello, lovers of series, television and stories that catch us and make us not stare at a screen!

Today I bring you a recommendation of a series that I saw a long time ago and that caught me completely from the first moment. To be honest, I watched it in three days. The speed is because first, I wanted to see its outcome and second, it was a miniseries, intense, but miniseries. So I think it's an ideal series to watch when you have nothing else to do and that keeps you entertained.

This series is called Defending Jacob of only 8 chapters. It is based on the novel of the same name by William Landay. It is an intense drama series that revolves around a horrific crime committed in guess what? A quiet town where nothing ever happens. This Apple TV+ produced crime drama combines drama, mystery, moral ambiguity and the weight of doubt in a courtroom thriller that asks you how far you're willing to go when someone you love is accused of a terrible crime. Even more so when you represent justice in your town and the main suspect of a terrible crime is your son.

Well, that's what happens to Andy Barber (played by Chris Evans), an assistant district attorney who evokes justice and righteousness, a man who lives his life by the rules and regulations, admired by those around him and with a family that looks like something out of a magazine, consisting of a beautiful wife and a son. But his perfect life and everything he believed in changes overnight when his 14-year-old son, Jacob, is accused of murdering a classmate, Ben Rifkin.

The first suspect was not Jacob, as it was his own father, Andy, who along with a team was investigating the case, but as the investigation progresses, everyone but Andy himself begins to point the finger at Jacob, because the shared history between Ben and Jacob is discovered. Soon, Andy, left off the case, will have to use all his wits and resources to dive deep into the investigation to find Ben's killer and prove Jacob's innocence.

Andy and his wife Laurie will do whatever it takes to prove their son's innocence, especially Andy, but sooner rather than later they will be faced with decisions and situations that will bring their ethical dilemmas into play, and run up against the reality that their family was not as perfect as they thought. Family secrets come to light and the growing uncertainty about their son's innocence.

If I'm being honest, I quite liked the performances of Evans and Dockery (Andy and Laurie). Their scenes have an intense emotional charge and deep chemistry, where you feel the anguish and fear for their only son. Understood, as the burden of proving his son's innocence, while the whole world points the finger at him, especially when more details about the investigation come to light. This, multiplied by the tense atmosphere that is felt in the series, makes denote their anguish as parents, not only by the desire to find a way to prove that Jacob did not do it, but by the fear, by the possibility that, in truth, he is guilty. Jaeden Martell's (Jacob) performance was also surprising, making you wonder at times if he's innocent or a psychopath.

Furthermore, the series itself is mainly about whether Jacob is actually innocent or, on the contrary, guilty. So it plays with the times and with certain details of the crime that sometimes point or simply discard Jacob, but this more than anything, is for the viewer to question Jacob's innocence or sentence him innocent, because that's what the series is about: Is Jacob guilty or not? Also, that the series raises issues such as genetic inheritance and the debate of whether certain genes passed from parent to child cause a certain disposition to crime to exist. Which, in my opinion, is not pseudoscience, but neither is it a deterministic science. For it is a rather complex field of science, which, while recognizing patterns, these must be accompanied by interaction with the environment.

This series is similar in idea to another one that came out a few months ago, but with a very different approach. The common thing is that I liked both of them and not only me, but also the critics, because they make you see both sides of the coin, maybe later I will also do a review of it.

Hoy les traigo una recomendación de una serie que vi hace mucho tiempo y que me atrapo por completo desde el momento uno. Siendo sincera, la vi en tres días. La rapidez se debe a que primero, quería ver su desenlace y segundo, era una miniserie, intensa, pero miniserie. Así que creo que es una serie ideal para ver cuando no tienes nada más que hacer y que te mantenga entretenido.

Esta serie se llama Defendiendo a Jacob de tan solo 8 capítulos. Está basada en la novela homónima de William Landay. Es una intensa serie de drama que gira en torno a un horroroso crimen cometido en ¿adivinen? Un tranquilo pueblo donde nunca ocurre nada. Este drama criminal producido por Apple TV+ combina drama, misterio, ambigüedad moral y el peso de la duda en un thriller judicial que te plantea hasta dónde estás dispuesto a llegar cuando alguien a quien amas es acusado de un terrible crimen. Más cuando tú representas la justicia en tu pueblo y el principal sospechoso de un terrible crimen es tu hijo.

Pues eso es lo que le sucede a Andy Barber (interpretado por Chris Evans), fiscal adjunto del distrito, quien evoca justicia y rectitud, un hombre que vive su vida al pie de las normas y las reglas, admirado por quienes lo rodean y con una familia que parece sacada de una revista, compuesta por una esposa hermosa y un hijo. Pero su vida perfecta y todo lo que él creía cambia de la noche a la mañana cuando su hijo de tan solo 14 años, Jacob, es acusado de asesinar a un compañero de clase, Ben Rifkin.

El primer sospechoso no fue Jacob, pues era su propio padre, Andy, quien junto con un equipo investigaba el caso, pero a medida que la investigación avanza, todos, menos el propio Andy, empiezan a apuntar a Jacob, porque se descubre el historial compartido entre Ben y Jacob. Pronto, Andy, dejado fuera del caso, tendrá que usar todo su ingenio y recursos para sumergirse en profundidad en la investigación para encontrar el asesino de Ben y demostrar la inocencia de Jacob.

Andy y su esposa Laurie harán lo que sea para demostrar la inocencia de su hijo, sobre todo Andy, pero más pronto que tarde se verán enfrentados a decisiones y situaciones que pondrán en juego sus dilemas éticos, y toparse con la realidad de que su familia no era tan perfecta como pensaban. Salen secretos familiares a la luz y la creciente incertidumbre sobre la inocencia de su hijo.

Si soy sincera, me gustaron bastante las actuaciones de Evans y Dockery (Andy y Laurie). Sus escenas tienen una carga emocional intensa y una química profunda, donde se siente la angustia y el temor por su único hijo. Entendido, como la carga de demostrar la inocencia de su hijo, mientras el mundo entero le apunta con el dedo, sobre todo cuando salen a la luz más detalles sobre la investigación. Esto, multiplicado por la atmósfera tensa que se siente en la serie, hace denotar su angustia como padres, no solo por el deseo de hallar la manera de demostrar que Jacob no lo hizo, sino por el temor, por la posibilidad de que, en verdad, sea culpable. La actuación de Jaeden Martell (Jacob) tambien fue asombrosa, por momentos hacia pensar si el chico era inocente de todo crimen o pueda ser un psicópata.

Aunado a esto, la serie en sí, se trata de demostrar si Jacob en realidad es inocente o, por el contrario, culpable. Por lo que juega, con los tiempos y con ciertos detalles del crimen que a veces apuntan o simplemente descartan a Jacob, pero esto más que nada, es para que el espectador se cuestione la inocencia de Jacob o lo sentencie inocente, porque de eso trata la serie: ¿Jacob es culpable o no?Además, que la serie plantea cuestiones como la herencia genética y el debate de si ciertos genes pasados de padres a hijo hagan que exista cierta disposición al crimen. Que, a mi parecer, no es pseudociencia, pero tampoco es una ciencia determinista. Pues es un campo bastante complejo de la ciencia, que, si bien reconoce patrones, estos deben ir acompañados por la interacción con el entorno.

Esta serie se parece en idea a otra que salió hace unos meses, pero con un enfoque muy distinto. Lo común es que ambas me gustaron y no solo a mí, sino también a la crítica, porque hacen ver las dos caras de la moneda, puede que más adelante también haga un review de ella.
