📕 Recommendation Off Campus: a young adult romance novel. [Eng/Esp]

Hello, film lovers!

I hope you’re all well. I’ve been really busy with uni, so I haven’t been able to post recently, but now that I’ve finished my first exams, I’m feeling much more relaxed. And as I’ve been constantly seeing edits of hockey and a girl wearing JLo’s iconic green dress dancing with a guy dressed as Maverick, I decided to watch the new Amazon Prime series: Off Campus.

The story goes like this: Hannah Wells is a music student with an incredible voice and a painful past, who is secretly in love with Justin Kholh, but Justin doesn’t even look at her. Then there’s Garret Graham, captain of the hockey team, a decent bloke but a bit of a womaniser, and a father he can’t stand. Garret just needs to pass one subject, and Hannah needs to get Justin’s attention.

So Garret, in ‘men want what other men want’ mode, convinces Hannah that Justin will only notice her if they become a couple. So, in exchange for Hannah tutoring him, he’ll pretend to be her boyfriend and make the guy jealous—who, according to Garret, “is just a pretentious idiot”. And so begins the fake romance between Garret and Hannah that will turn into love.

I don’t watch many teen romance series, but I really liked this one, though I admit I did pause it several times because I couldn’t bear the heartbreak, ha ha ha; it’s just that some of the things that happened either made me laugh or cringe on their behalf. The story is a cliché, but that doesn’t detract from it. I liked how the relationship between Hannah and Garret developed; there was chemistry from the start and the trust needed to turn to each other when they needed help – in other words, a healthy relationship.

Plus, it wasn’t some weird love triangle between the hockey player, the confused girl and the singer with a deep soul. The story fits right into this sports romance boom, being entertaining and melodramatic without going over the top. Garret’s teammates—Logan, Dean and Tucker—brought that fun, humorous tone to the series, as well as setting up subplots that, as I understand it, will be developed in future seasons.

I really liked the execution of the story; it was entertaining in every episode and managed to hook the audience—mostly female—whether through the romance, the drama, the personal growth, or simply the handsome lads playing hockey, making it ideal for viewers aged 20–30 or older.

I really liked the character of Garret, as he’s a guy who’s understanding towards Hannah and breaks away from the dynamic of the ‘male lead who treats the girl he claims to love badly at every turn’, and Hannah as a girl who knows exactly what she wants in life, which makes the romance flow naturally and without too many hiccups, beyond simply realising they like each other. From what I’ve read, the series is based on a series of books by Ellen Kennedy, so it already had a solid fan base, and now, given the success the story has enjoyed, it looks set to continue with Garret’s friends and hockey teammates.

Espero que se encuentren bien. He estado muy ocupada con la universidad, por lo que no he podido publicar recientemente, pero gracias a que ya presenté mis primeros exámenes, estoy mucho más tranquila. Y como no han parado de salirme edits de hockey y de una chica vestida con el icónico vestido verde de JLo bailando con un chico disfrazado de Maverick, decidí ver la nueva serie de Amazon Prime: Off Campus.

La historia va así: Hannah Wells es una estudiante de música con una increíble voz y un pasado doloroso, que está secretamente enamorada de Justin Kholh, pero Justin ni siquiera la mira. Por otro lado, está Garret Graham, capitán del equipo de hockey, buena persona, pero mujeriego, y un padre que detesta. Garret solo necesita aprobar una materia y Hannah necesita llamar la atención de Justin.

Por lo que Garret, en modo “los hombres quieren lo que otros hombres quieren”, convence a Hannah de que Justin solo se fijará en ella si ellos se vuelven novios. Por lo que, a cambio de que Hannah le dé tutorías, él fingirá ser su novio y darle celos a quien, según Garret, “es solo un pendejo pretencioso”. Así comienza el romance falso entre Garret y Hannah que derivará en amor.

No veo muchas series juveniles de romance, pero esta me gustó mucho, aunque admito que sí pausé varias veces porque no podía con la pena, jajaja; es que algunas cosas que pasaban o me daban risa o pena ajena. La historia es un cliché, pero eso no le quita puntos. Me gustó cómo se desarrolló la relación entre Hannah y Garret; había química desde el principio y la confianza necesaria para acudir al otro cuando necesitaban ayuda, es decir, una relación sana.

Además de que no fue un triángulo amoroso todo raro entre el jugador de hockey, la chica confundida y el cantante con alma profunda. La historia entra en este auge del sport romance, siendo entretenida y melodramática sin caer en la exageración. Los compañeros de Garret: Logan, Dean y Tucker le aportaron ese tono divertido y humorista a la serie, además de dar paso a subtramas que, por lo que entiendo, se desarrollarán en futuras temporadas.

Me gustó mucho la ejecución de la historia, siendo entretenida en cada episodio y capaz de enganchar al público, mayormente femenino, ya sea por el romance, el drama, la superación o simplemente los chicos guapos que juegan hockey, ideal para el público de entre 20-30 o más.

Me gustó mucho el personaje de Garret, al ser un chico comprensivo con Hannah y romper esta dinámica de “protagonista masculino que trata mal en cada paso a la chica que dice amar”, y Hannah como una chica clara de lo que quiere en la vida, lo que hace que el romance fluya con sentido y sin tantos tropiezos, más allá del darse cuenta de que se gustan. Según leí, la serie se basa en una serie de libros de Ellen Kennedy, por lo que ya tenía una sólida base de fans y ahora, con el éxito que ha tenido la historia, parece que continuará con los amigos y compañeros de hockey de Garret.
