Cuando elijo ver una película la mayoría del tiempo me fío más por el título que de la misma sinopsis, ya que muchas veces esta suele dar más spoilers de lo esperado y terminan por desanimarme. A mí parecer los títulos son más precisos en dar una descripción, además que suelen dejar la intriga necesaria para darle play a la película sin titubeos. Cómo ejemplo puedo dejarle los títulos del último par de películas que vi, el primero es “La forma del agua” y el otro “Los espíritus de la Isla”, algo melancólicos, con un toque dramático y por supuesto intrigantes. Aunque debo admitir que alguna que otra vez me he confiado de más y al final también es decepcionante, pero hoy me alegro de decir que este no es el caso, con tan solo leer el título me puedo esperar muchas cosas sobre la trama y el desenlace.

“El callejón de las almas perdidas” deja mucho que pensar, incluso hasta algo de miedo puede generar. Me entusiasmó mucho ver que las primeras escenas correspondían bastante bien a mis deducciones, la película comienza mostrando a un hombre ocultando un cuerpo bajo una casa en llamas, por supuesto, ocasionadas por él mismo, para luego verlo intentar alejarse de lo que ahora era su oscuro pasado. El protagonista de esta historia llamado Stanton, intenta encontrar una nueva vida emprendiendo un viaje sin rumbo, dejándose llevar por las oportunidades que encuentra en el camino.

Stanton, en su travesía, afortunada o desafortunadamente se topa con personas que tienen formas un tanto peculiares de ganarse la vida ¿Será aquí el lugar y las personas a las que hace referencia el título? Es difícil encontrar la respuesta correcta cuando ves a un alma que ya se presumía perdida encontrando un talento, un propósito y un nuevo amor. Para Stanton, todo esto se estaba convirtiendo en una nueva oportunidad de vida, aunque muy en el fondo no podía desligarse completamente de su pasado.

Tras haber descubierto en lo que era bueno, Stanton estaba decidido a explotarlo hasta llegar a lo más alto, su éxito era tan rotundo que se sintió plenamente confiado de lo que era capaz, pero lo que no se esperaba era conocer nuevas personas que desafiaron su oficio, y por ende su orgullo. Es entonces que decide enfrentarlos dándoles lo que quieren, aunque esto cueste quebrar por completo toda su gloria.

Está trama está ambientada en los años 30, donde a mí parecer la masculinidad se demostraba con poder y sometimiento, cualidades que veremos bien plasmados en el protagonista y en personajes secundarios, además de contar con escenas que muestran la precariedad y la opulencia de la época tanto material como mentalmente. También encontraremos degeneración de derechos y valores humanos a los que Stanton en algún punto tendrá que enfrentarse como opresor y luego como oprimido.

Lo que más me gusta de la película es que trata a fondo el orgullo, la avaricia, la enfermedad de poder y como consecuencia de eso, la muerte. Entonces, una vez más me pregunto, ¿Es este el callejón de las almas perdidas? la respuesta la tendrán que descubrir ustedes.

Por supuesto que ver a tan grandes actores juntos en una misma peli fue un plus maravilloso, protagonizado por Bradley Cooper, que lo recuerdo muy bien de ¿Qué pasó ayer?; pero me emocionó aún más ver a Rooney Mara que actúa en dos películas que amo demasiado (Un camino a casa y Her), también tenemos a Toni Collette que no la puedo olvidar de Hereditary y otro más que estoy segura también reconocerán de otras pelis.

Como dato curioso les comento que la película no llegó a recaudar los 60 millones de dólares de su presupuesto, algo que me causa mucha curiosidad porque a mi parecer está muy bien producida, por supuesto que por el mismo Guillermo del Toro. Sin más que decir, deseo que la vean pronto y la disfruten tanto como yo.

  When I choose to watch a movie most of the time I rely more on the title than on the synopsis itself, since many times it usually gives more spoilers than expected and ends up discouraging me. In my opinion, the titles are more accurate in giving a description, besides they usually leave the necessary intrigue to play the movie without hesitation. As an example I can give you the titles of the last couple of movies I saw, the first one is "The Shape of Water" and the other one is "The Spirits of the Island", somewhat melancholic, with a dramatic touch and of course intriguing. Although I must admit that once in a while I have been overconfident and the end is also disappointing, but today I am glad to say that this is not the case, just by reading the title I can expect a lot of things about the plot and the outcome.

  "Alley of Lost Souls" leaves a lot to think about, even some fear can be generated. I was very excited to see that the first scenes corresponded quite well to my deductions, the film begins showing a man hiding a body under a burning house, of course, caused by himself, to then see him trying to get away from what was now his dark past. The protagonist of this story named Stanton, tries to find a new life by embarking on an aimless journey, letting himself be carried away by the opportunities he finds along the way.

  Stanton, on his journey, fortunately or unfortunately encounters people who have somewhat peculiar ways of making a living. Is this the place and the people the title refers to? It's hard to find the right answer when you see a soul already presumed lost finding a talent, a purpose and a new love. For Stanton, all of this was becoming a new lease on life, although deep down he couldn't completely detach himself from his past.

  Having discovered what he was good at, Stanton was determined to exploit it until he reached the top, his success was so resounding that he felt fully confident of what he was capable of, but what he did not expect was to meet new people who challenged his craft, and therefore his pride. It is then that he decides to confront them by giving them what they want, even if it means completely breaking all his glory.

  This plot is set in the 30's, where in my opinion masculinity was demonstrated with power and submission, qualities that we will see well embodied in the protagonist and secondary characters, in addition to scenes that show the precariousness and opulence of the time both materially and mentally. We will also find degeneration of human rights and values that Stanton at some point will have to face as oppressor and then as oppressed.

  What I like most about the film is that it deals in depth with pride, greed, the disease of power and as a consequence of that, death. So, once again I ask myself, is this the alley of lost souls, the answer is for you to find out.

  Of course seeing such great actors together in the same movie was a wonderful plus, starring Bradley Cooper, who I remember very well from What Happened Yesterday; but I was even more excited to see Rooney Mara who plays in two movies I love too much (A Way Home and Her), we also have Toni Collette who I can't forget from Hereditary and another one I'm sure you will also recognize from other movies.

  As a curious fact, I would like to tell you that the film did not gross the 60 million dollars of its budget, something that makes me very curious because in my opinion it is very well produced, of course by Guillermo del Toro himself. Without further ado, I hope you see it soon and enjoy it as much as I did.
