¡Un gran saludo a todo el equipo de Scrobble.life! Les comparto mi primera publicación en la comunidad. Primero comenzaré hablándoles brevemente del libro.
Frankenstein es una de las historias más conocidas de la literatura universal. Fue escrita por la autora británica Mary Shelley y publicada en 1818 bajo el título "Frankenstein" o "El Moderno Prometeo". En resumen, la novela trata sobre un científico (Víctor) apasionado por la química que, poco a poco, se fue obsesionando con la idea de vencer a la muerte.
Esa fijación demencial por la inmortalidad causó su perdición, creando a una criatura monstruosa que luego no supo controlar. Digamos que ese fue el precio que pagó Víctor por atreverse a desafiar a Dios… o peor aún, creerse Dios.
Desde entonces, la historia de Shelley ha sido adaptada innumerables veces y de distintas maneras al cine, la televisión y el teatro. Cada director que ha decidido darle vida a esta obra, ha sido capaz de encontrar nuevas formas de hablarnos sobre la ambición, la obsesión, la soledad, el rechazo, la falta de límites y sus consecuencias.
Tal es el caso de la adaptación que hizo el director Guillermo del Toro con Frankenstein en 2025. El director mexicano es uno de los más importantes del cine fantástico contemporáneo y representa con mucho orgullo el talento latinoamericano dentro de la industria cinematográfica internacional. Algo que siempre me ha fascinado de su estilo es la capacidad que tiene para humanizar el terror: para él, los monstruos no son simples criaturas que deben ser destruidas… los verdaderos monstruos son los seres humanos.
Es por esto que su versión de Frankenstein encaja a la perfección dentro de su filmografía. No se trata de una simple historia sobre un “científico loco” que crea a un monstruo, es la historia de un creador que no sabe qué hacer con aquello a lo que ha dado vida, y sobre una criatura antinatural que llega a este mundo sin comprender por qué ha sido traída a él.
Trama
La película comienza con una escena en el ártico, donde la tripulación de un barco rescata a Víctor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac) seriamente herido. Inmediatamente, son atacados por una criatura de fuerza descomunal (Jacob Elordi) que clama por la rendición de Víctor a cambio de no asesinar a toda la tripulación.
Ante la confusión de los marineros, Víctor decide relatarles el camino de ambición, malas decisiones y tragedia que lo llevó hasta allí, revelándoles que el monstruo que los acecha fue creado por él.
En ese viaje a través de su historia, conocemos a un joven Víctor marcado por el trauma familiar y la estricta sombra de un padre maltratador y autoritario (Charles Dance), vacíos emocionales que intenta llenar desafiando las leyes naturales de la vida.
Tras ser expulsado del Colegio de Cirujanos por sus polémicos métodos, Víctor encuentra un inesperado aliado en Henrich Harlander (Christoph Waltz), un traficante de armas que decide financiar sus experimentos.
El caos comienza cuando, después de múltiples intentos, una chispa finalmente logra encender el cuerpo ensamblado. Lo que vino después, no fue precisamente la emoción de Víctor; lejos de sentir el triunfo del descubrimiento, lo embargó un pánico y un rechazo absolutos hacia su creación. Es por esto que acaba abandonando a su suerte a la criatura, obligándola a enfrentarse a un mundo que solo le teme y la rechaza cruelmente.
En el camino de soledad, la criatura emprende un viaje de autodescubrimiento buscando entender su propia existencia, mientras personajes como Elizabeth (Mia Goth) le muestran empatía aceptación y compasión. Lo que sigue es una inevitable espiral de odio, culpa, persecución y destrucción entre el creador y su creación (el "padre" y el "hijo" simbólicos), donde la búsqueda de afecto se transforma en una amenaza devastadora. Se convierte en una batalla campal entre ambos.
Mi opinión
La Criatura que es interpretada por el actor Jacob Elordi, fue uno de los elementos más criticados desde que se anunció la película. Muchas personas no estuvieron de acuerdo con la elección de este actor para el papel, especialmente porque tenían una imagen preconcebida del monstruo de Frankenstein. Para muchos espectadores la criatura debía tener otro aspecto y ser interpretada como las versiones clásicas que ya conocemos.
No obstante, una de las cosas más interesantes de este film es precisamente que Guillermo del Toro no tiene interés en repetir lo que ya hemos visto, dándonos un enfoque distintivo de la criatura, otra cara que ningún director había plasmado en cines. En esta versión, el monstruo no se presenta únicamente como una figura aterradora, hay una intención evidente de mostrar su humanidad, vulnerabilidad y confusión.
Es un ser que llega al mundo sin haber elegido existir y que está destinado a desentonar con la humanidad haga lo que haga. Su apariencia lo convierte en el blanco fácil del rechazo y el miedo de quién lo mira; es una condena antes de que pueda demostrar quién es realmente. Aquí es donde creo que Elordi consigue aportar algo interesante al personaje: logró transmitir la vulnerabilidad y desesperación de la criatura.
Su altura y presencia física sirvieron para imponer respeto en escena, representando a una criatura colosal y aterradora que conserva una enorme fragilidad emocional.
En cuanto a Oscar Isaac como Víctor Frankenstein, pienso que su actuación fue bastante buena. Isaac interpreta a un Víctor intenso, arrogante y obsesionado con vencer a la muerte; consigue transmitir muy bien la complejidad de un personaje brillante y que, al mismo tiempo, está profundamente marcado por sus traumas y sus errores.
Algunas personas consideraron que su interpretación podía resultar demasiado teatral en ciertos momentos. Pero yo no estoy de acuerdo con esas opiniones, más bien ese estilo encaja perfectamente con el tono gótico y dramático que Guillermo del Toro le da a la película. Y cuando leí la historia en mi adolescencia, así es como me imaginaba a Víctor en la vida real: exagerado e intenso.
Disfruté bastante la película. Entiendo que no todas las personas hayan conectado con ella y también puedo comprender algunas de las críticas que recibió. Es importante entender que esta no pretende ser una copia exacta de todas las versiones anteriores. Guillermo del Toro toma la historia de Mary Shelley y la convierte en una obra personal. La película tiene su propio estilo visual, su propia atmósfera y una manera diferente de abordar la relación entre Víctor y su creación.
Uno de los aspectos que más me gustó fue la estética de la película. Del Toro construye un mundo gótico, oscuro y lleno de detalles. La fotografía, el vestuario y el diseño de producción crean una atmósfera espectacular del siglo XIX.
Además, Frankenstein no quiere asustar únicamente al espectador. El verdadero horror de la historia está en la soledad, en el abandono, en el rechazo y en las consecuencias de crear algo sin estar preparado para asumir la responsabilidad que implica. Víctor Frankenstein persigue algo extraordinario, pero no parece comprender del todo lo que significa traer una nueva vida al mundo.
Y quizá esa sea una de las incógnitas más importantes que plantea la película: ¿quién es realmente el monstruo? ¿La criatura que nace con una apariencia terrorífica o el creador que la abandona a su suerte después de darle vida?
Para mí, ahí se encuentra gran parte de la fuerza de esta historia. La película nos obliga a observar a la criatura de una manera distinta. En lugar de verla simplemente como un monstruo despiadado, nos invita a preguntarnos qué habría ocurrido si hubiera sido recibida con amor, comprensión y empatía. Tal vez el verdadero monstruo no nace siendo un monstruo. Tal vez también puede convertirse en uno, debido a la forma en que los demás lo tratan.
Víctor pasó gran parte de su vida intentando vencer a la muerte, pero terminó creando una vida a la que no supo darle amor ni un lugar en el mundo. Al final, repitió la misma historia de dolor y de rechazo que tuvo con su padre: trató al monstruo como su padre lo trató a él, se convirtió en lo que él tanto odiaba.
En cambio, la criatura, a pesar de haber sido excluida y maltratada, demostró una capacidad enorme de compasión y empatía que muchas veces los propios seres humanos no tienen.

Frankenstein is one of the best-known stories in world literature. It was written by the British author Mary Shelley and published in 1818 under the title Frankenstein or The Modern Prometheus. In short, the novel is about a scientist (Victor) with a passion for chemistry who, little by little, became obsessed with the idea of defeating death.
That insane obsession with immortality led to his downfall, creating a monstrous creature he was then unable to control. Let’s just say that was the price Victor paid for daring to defy God… or worse yet, for believing himself to be God.
Since then, Shelley’s story has been adapted countless times and in various ways for film, television, and the stage. Every director who has chosen to bring this work to life has found new ways to explore themes of ambition, obsession, loneliness, rejection, the absence of limits, and their consequences.
Such is the case with director Guillermo del Toro’s 2025 adaptation of Frankenstein. The Mexican director is one of the most important figures in contemporary fantasy cinema and proudly represents Latin American talent within the international film industry. Something that has always fascinated me about his style is his ability to humanize horror: for him, monsters aren't just creatures that must be destroyed… the real monsters are human beings.
That is why his version of Frankenstein fits perfectly into his filmography. It is not simply a story about a “mad scientist” who creates a monster; it is the story of a creator who does not know what to do with the being he has brought to life, and of an unnatural creature that comes into this world without understanding why it has been brought into it.
Plot
The film opens with a scene in the Arctic, where the crew of a ship rescues a seriously injured Victor Frankenstein (Oscar Isaac). Immediately, they are attacked by a creature of immense strength (Jacob Elordi) who demands that Victor surrender in exchange for sparing the entire crew.
Faced with the sailors' confusion, Victor decides to tell them the story of the path of ambition, bad decisions, and tragedy that led him there, revealing that the monster stalking them was created by him.
On this journey through his history, we meet a young Victor marked by family trauma and the oppressive shadow of an abusive and authoritarian father (Charles Dance)—emotional voids he tries to fill by defying the natural laws of life.
After being expelled from the College of Surgeons for his controversial methods, Victor finds an unexpected ally in Henrich Harlander (Christoph Waltz), an arms dealer who decides to fund his experiments.
The chaos begins when, after multiple attempts, a spark finally manages to ignite the assembled body. What followed was not exactly a moment of joy for Victor; far from feeling the triumph of discovery, he was overcome by absolute panic and a total rejection of his creation. That is why he ends up abandoning the creature to its fate, forcing it to face a world that only fears it and cruelly rejects it.
On the path of solitude, the creature embarks on a journey of self-discovery, seeking to understand its own existence, while characters like Elizabeth (Mia Goth) show it empathy, acceptance, and compassion. What follows is an inevitable spiral of hatred, guilt, persecution, and destruction between the creator and his creation (the symbolic “father” and “son”), where the search for affection turns into a devastating threat. It becomes a full-scale battle between the two.
My opinion
The Creature, played by actor Jacob Elordi, has been one of the most criticized aspects of the film since its announcement. Many people disagreed with the choice of this actor for the role, especially because they had a preconceived image of Frankenstein’s monster. For many viewers, the creature should have looked different and been portrayed like the classic versions we already know.
However, one of the most interesting things about this film is precisely that Guillermo del Toro has no interest in repeating what we’ve already seen, offering us a distinctive take on the creature—a different side that no director had ever brought to the big screen. In this version, the monster isn’t portrayed solely as a terrifying figure; there’s a clear intention to show its humanity, vulnerability, and confusion.
He is a being who comes into the world without having chosen to exist and who is destined to stand out from humanity no matter what he does. His appearance makes him an easy target for rejection and fear from those who see him; it’s a condemnation before he can even show who he really is. This is where I think Elordi manages to bring something interesting to the character: he succeeded in conveying the creature’s vulnerability and desperation.
His height and physical presence commanded respect on stage, as he portrayed a colossal and terrifying creature who nevertheless retains an immense emotional fragility.
As for Oscar Isaac as Victor Frankenstein, I think his performance was quite good. Isaac portrays a Victor who is intense, arrogant, and obsessed with defeating death; he does a great job of conveying the complexity of a brilliant character who is, at the same time, deeply scarred by his traumas and mistakes.
Some people felt that his performance might come across as too theatrical at times. But I don't agree with those opinions; rather, that style fits perfectly with the gothic and dramatic tone that Guillermo del Toro brings to the film. And when I read the story as a teenager, that's exactly how I imagined Victor would be in real life: over-the-top and intense.
I really enjoyed the movie. I understand that not everyone connected with it, and I can also understand some of the criticism it received. It’s important to understand that this film isn’t meant to be an exact copy of all the previous versions. Guillermo del Toro takes Mary Shelley’s story and turns it into a personal work. The film has its own visual style, its own atmosphere, and a different way of approaching the relationship between Victor and his creation.
One of the things I liked most was the film's visual style. Del Toro creates a gothic, dark world rich in detail. The cinematography, costumes, and production design come together to create a spectacular 19th-century atmosphere.
Furthermore, Frankenstein isn't just meant to scare the audience. The true horror of the story lies in loneliness, abandonment, rejection, and the consequences of creating something without being prepared to take on the responsibility that comes with it. Victor Frankenstein is pursuing something extraordinary, but he doesn't seem to fully understand what it means to bring a new life into the world.
And perhaps that is one of the most important questions the film raises: Who is really the monster? The creature born with a terrifying appearance, or the creator who abandons it to its fate after bringing it to life?
For me, that’s where much of this story’s power lies. The film forces us to look at the creature in a different way. Instead of seeing it simply as a ruthless monster, it invites us to wonder what would have happened if it had been met with love, understanding, and empathy. Perhaps the real monster isn’t born a monster. Perhaps it can also become one, because of the way others treat it.
Víctor spent much of his life trying to defeat death, but he ended up creating a life that he didn't know how to love or give a place in the world. In the end, he repeated the same story of pain and rejection he had experienced with his father: he treated the monster the way his father had treated him, and he became the very thing he hated so much.
On the other hand, the creature, despite having been excluded and mistreated, demonstrated an enormous capacity for compassion and empathy—qualities that humans themselves often lack.

Good morning @vezo, I read and understand every idea and assessment you express in this review. I share some of the points you mention, such as how great Guillermo del Toro is as a director; it's no wonder I'm proud of his work. Although, I confess, I'm in love with Boris Karloff's Frankenstein... and I find it quite difficult to enjoy the later ones. I don't know if you've seen the 1931 version... it has a lot in common with Guillermo del Toro's approach.
Regarding what you say about the actors and the gothic atmosphere, I agree with you... in fact, when I manage to forget the 1931 version, I think it's a great film... and quite daring.

Comparto algunos puntos que mencionas como lo grande que es Gullermo del Toro como director, no me extraña que esté orgullosa de su trabajo. Aunque, te confieso, soy un enamorado del Frankenstein de Boris karloff... y me cuesta bastante disfrutar de los posteriores. No se si la has llegado a ver la versión de 1931... tiene mucho de la reflexión de la propuesta por Guillermo del Toro.
Sobre lo que comentas sobre los actores y el ambiente gótico, estoy de acuerdo contigo... es más, cuando logro olvidarme de la de 1931 me parece una gran película... y con una basatnte propuesta arriesgada.

No solo había ideas preconcebidas por como era Frankenstein sino por lo que podía dar Jacob ya que muchos lo conocían por Euphoria entonces no lo ponen en ese grupo de buenos actores. Al final es una gran película, GDT logró una versión de este monstruo con mucha más humanidad y discernimiento y eso fue un puntazo además de lo visual claro está pero ya eso es común en este director.

Y eso que yo no he visto Euphoria, pero sí vi las críticas, algunas fueron muy exageradas en contra del actor que me dejaban como 😰, cuando vi la peli de verdad me gustó lo que el plasmó en ella. Al final, demostró que sí pudo con eso y que es un actor versátil. Estoy seguro de que, aparte de haber leído la obra de Mary Shelley, he visto todas las versiones o adaptaciones de la película Frankenstein.
En tu reseña indicas que todas cuentan lo mismo y haces un alto en la versión de “Del Toro”.
Hace unos meses tuve la oportunidad de ver la película. En lo que respecta a lo visual, me pareció espectacular; seguro que eso se dio porque el séptimo arte no se ha quedado quieto y ha sabido nutrirse de mentes que saben de fotografía, vestuario, puesta en escena, etc. Por allí vamos bien.
Elordi se destaca, logra transmitir más allá del simple monstruo. Pero la trama, eso mató la película.
Del Toro perdió tiempo en explicaciones, restándole esa magia de la obra original. Por supuesto, respeto tu opinión, tan solo estoy dando la mía. La película se me hizo pesada; casi que no la terminé de ver. Creo que todavía falta que alguien le brinde un tributo bien merecido a Mary Shelley con una mejor película. Esperemos que no haya que esperar mucho.

Guillermo always have an interesting way of making movies. Althought I didnt really hear about this film much compared to Hellboy or the other one of the sea creature falling in love. However I am glad he still making new movies.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
