En el Barrio Chino del distrito de Garibong, en Seúl, Corea del Sur, un par de hombres estaban peleándose por asuntos de dinero en las afueras de un restaurante chino. La pelea parecía acabar en una riña de cuchillo, pero un hombre, quien estaba hablando por teléfono, intervino torciéndole la mano a uno de ellos. La narrativa te engancha desde un primer momento; las escenas de acción son rápidas, llenas de adrenalina, que te mantienen al borde de la silla. Ma Dong-seok (como el detective Seok-do) y Yoo Kye-sang (como el temible Jang Chen) han hecho un trabajo formidable, al igual que los demás miembros del elenco.

Lo que considero un punto favorable es que en la narrativa no hay ni buenos ni malos, sino niveles de corrupción. Seok-do es un detective que conoce bien a los distintos líderes de las pandillas locales y que ha hecho una serie de tratos cuestionables con ellos a cambio de garantizar la paz a la ciudadanía. No duda en recurrir a prácticas no persuasivas para obtener resultados (en especial confesiones) y tampoco en gozar un poco de los favores de aquellos que han cruzado líneas con la ley. Tiene toda una red de informantes, quienes le otorgan información a cambio de inmunidad. Por su parte, Jang Chen es escurridizo, astuto, manipulador e inteligente; no llega a Seúl a cobrarse una deuda nada más, sino que vio la ciudad como un campo de juego, una oportunidad para obtener poder social. Jang Chen sabe que el miedo es el arma más poderosa de todas, y que con ello la gente puede hacer lo que él quisiera en un chasquido de dedos.

Si buscas una película de acción entretenida para pasarla el último día de este año 2025, sin duda te recomendaría que le eches una ojeada a Al margen de la ley. Si bien se encuentra disponible en YouTube, los subtítulos no son muy buenos. Hasta el momento de escribir esta reseña, todavía se encuentra disponible en Prime Video, pero a partir de mañana ya no estará en la lista.

In the Chinatown of Garibong district on Seoul, South Korea, a couple of men were fighting over money outside a Chinese restaurant. The fight looked like it was going to end in a knife fight, but a man who was talking on the phone intervened by twisting the hand of one of them. The man in question was Detective Ma Seok-do, who was in charge of security in the area and to keep still two rival gangs that control the area, Venom and Cobra.

However, the zone would transform soon in a battlefield when enters into scene a member of one of China's most brutal gang, the Black Dragon, a man named Jang Chen. This criminal has his sights set on Seoul's Chinatown and other surrounding areas, and he won't rest until he takes control of every business in the area.

The Outlaws, also known as Crime City, is the first part of a tetralogy of Korean action films. Directed by Kang Yung-sung and starring Ma Dong-seok (or Don Lee) and Yoon Kye-sang, it was filmed and released in 2017 and is based on the Heuksapa incident, a 2004 case involving Chinese and Korean gangs operating in Chinatown.

The story gets you from the very first moment; the action scenes are quick, full of adrenaline, which make you stay at the border of the seat. Ma Dong-seok (as detective Seok-do) and Yoo Kye-sang (as the fearful Jang Chen) did a tremendous job, as well as the rest of the cast.

What I consider a positive point is that in the narrative there are no good guys or bad guys, but rather levels of corruption. Seok-do is a detective who knows the various local gang leaders well and has made a series of questionable deals with them in exchange for guaranteeing peace for the citizens. He doesn't hesitate to resort to non-persuasive practices to get results (especially confessions) or to enjoy a little bit of the favors of those who have crossed the line with the law. He has a whole network of informants who give him information in exchange for immunity. For his part, Jang Chen is elusive, cunning, manipulative, and intelligent; he didn't come to Seoul just to collect a debt, but rather saw the city as a playground, an opportunity to gain social power. Jang Chen knows that fear is the most powerful weapon of all, and that with it, people will do whatever he wants at the snap of his fingers.

If you're looking for an entertaining action movie to watch in the last day of 2025, without a doubt I would recommend you to check The Outlaws. Although it is available on YouTube, the subtitles are not very good. At the time of writing this review, it's still available on Prime Video, but as of tomorrow it will no longer be on the list.
