It was only yesterday that I had the chance to watch this cinematic gem released in 2023, and I can honestly say it is the best film I have ever seen about the tragedy that took place in 1972. I recall a movie from back then that was quite popular and released in theaters worldwide, yet the actual survivors felt it didn't stay true to the facts of what really happened. Then came another film in the 90s; while it was an improvement over the first, it still left a lot to be desired. However, the version Netflix has given us is—without a doubt—the best one yet (according to the survivors themselves).
Ayer fue que tuve la opotunidaad de ver esta joya de pelicula que salió en el 2023, y la verdaad es que puedo decir con toda honestidad que es la mejor que he visto acerca de esta tragedia que ocurrió en el años 72. Recuerdo que en aquellos años hubo una película que fue bastante popular y que llegó a los cines de todo el mundo pero según los sovrecivientes reales no era muy apegada al canon, a lo que ocurrió realente, luego llegó otra película en los años 90, y aunque fue mejor que la anterior, aún así dejó mucho que desear, pero el material que nos ofreció Netflix es sin lugar a dudas la mejor (según los propios sobrevivientes)
While the film depicts the grim reality of the crash and the harrowing ordeals the survivors endured, it does not dwell on these aspects—least of all on the subject that sparked such morbid fascination in so many: anthropophagy (consuming human remains). Instead, it emphasizes teamwork, resilience, and, above all, love and genuine friendship—particularly through the actions of Numa Turcatti (indeed, the film is told almost entirely from his perspective). This lends the story a dramatic yet more human, reflective, and empathetic quality.
La película en sí, a pesar de que muestra la crudeza del accidente y las situaciones terribles que los sobrevivientes tuvieron que pasar, no hace énfasis en ello, mucho menos en el tema que causó mucho morbo en tantas personas, me refero al tema de la antropofagia (comer cadáveres de personas) sino que enfatizó el trabajo en equipo, la reciliencia y sobre todo el amor y la amistad sincera, en especial el gesto de Numa Turcatti (y de hecho toda la película está practicamente desde su perspectiva) esto le da un toque dramático pero más humano, reflexivo y empático.
The central theme of the entire film is unity and teamwork, as well as mutual trust; there is no room for individualism when the environment is so hostile that it can overcome you in a matter of seconds. The avalanche scene is particularly moving because it further reduces the number of survivors—claiming the life of the group's only woman and leaving the others even more trapped—yet it simultaneously demonstrates that the love they shared was the driving force that compelled them to keep living. Furthermore, as the film is based on true events, it presents characters who are not perfect but entirely human—possessing fears, insecurities, and flaws—yet all of them undergo a deeply satisfying evolution.
El eje central de toda la película es la unión y el trabajo en equipo, pero también la confianza mutua, el individualismo no tiene cabida cuando el entorno es tan hostil que te puede vencer en cuestión de segundos. La escena de la avalancha es particularmente emotiva porque reduce aún más el número de sobrevivientes, se lleva a la única mujer del grupo y los deja aún más confinados, pero al mismo tiempo nos demuestra que el amor que sentían los unos por los otros fue la fuerza que movió el empuje que los impulsaba a vivir. Además, al ser una película basada en hechos reales no te muestra personajes perfectos sino completamente humanos, con miedos, inseguridades y defectos, pero todos evolucionan de una manera muy satisfactoria.
I also like the fact that the actors are not just Latin American but authentically Uruguayan, so the original accent is preserved, and the film's aesthetic is carefully based on actual images taken by the survivors, which adds an extra touch of originality.
También me gusta el hecho de que los actores no solo son latinoamericanos, sino autenticamente uruguayos, así que se mantiene el acento original, y la estética de la película está cuidadosamente basada en las imagenes reales tomadas por los sobrevivientes, lo cuál le da un toque extra de originalidad.
