Movies to watch on Halloween [ESP/ENG]
Since the date when everyone is looking for horror content, especially movies, is approaching, today I want to recommend three options. They are not the typical paranormal horror movies because I don't usually watch that type of film, but they are good options for those who are looking for thrills.
Ya que se acerca la fecha en que todos buscan algún contenido de terror, en especial las películas, hoy les quiero recomendar tres opciones, no son las típicas películas de terror paranormal porque no suelo consumir ese tipo de films, pero son buenas opciones para quienes están buscando emociones fuertes.
Sweeney Todd, the demon barber of Fleet Street

This 2007 film tells the story of Benjamin Barker, a barber who received a cruel and unjust sentence from Judge Turpin, who was obsessed with Baker's wife. Turpin banished Baker, abused his wife, and took their daughter to raise as his protégée. But years later, the barber returns to the city under a pseudonym (Sweeney Todd) and, together with Mrs. Lovett, begins to train and refine his technique, not for the personal care of his clients, but to take revenge on Judge Turpin. However, the most shocking aspect of this whole affair is the macabre symbiosis he maintains with his partner and accomplice, Mrs. Lovett, as she helps him dispose of the corpses by grinding them up and using them as filling for the pies she sells.
Esta película del 2007 nos narra la historia de Benjamin Barker, un barbero que obtuvo una cruel e injusta sentencia por parte del juez Turpin que estaba obsesionado con la esposa de Baker, así que lo desterró, abusó de la esposa y se quedó con la hija para criarla como su protegida, pero años después el barbero regresa a la ciudad bajo un seudónimo (Sweeney Todd) y junto con la señora Lovett empieza a entrenarse y refinar su técnica, pero no para el cuidado personal de sus clientes, sino para vengarse del juez Turpin, pero lo más impactante de todo este asunto es la macabra simbiosis que mantiene con su compañera y cómplice, la señora Lovett, ya que ella le ayuda a deshacerse de los cadáveres, moliéndolos y usándolos como relleno para los pasteles que vendía.

Despite being a musical film (something I don't usually watch), it maintains a dynamic pace and a good balance between the songs and the plot. There aren't so many songs that they become overwhelming or make you feel like you're watching a macabre version of Disney. On the other hand, we have the cast, an excellent selection of the best talents such as Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, Helena Bonham Carter, and Johnny Depp, all under the excellent direction of Tim Burton, so brilliant performances are guaranteed. In addition, the story is inspired by a play (which I saw many years ago at the municipal theater in Valencia), which in turn was inspired by legends from low-budget Victorian horror novels with dense narratives.
A pesar de ser una película de tipo musical (algo que normalmente no suelo ver) mantiene un ritmo dinámico y un buen equilibrio entre las canciones y la trama, no son demasiadas hasta el punto en que abrumen o que sientas que estás viendo una macabra versión de Disney, por otra parte tenemos al elenco, una excelente selección de los mejores talentos como Alan Rickman, Timothy Spall, Helena Boham Carter y Johnny Depp, todos ellos bajo la excelente dirección de Tim Burton, así que las actuaciones brillantes están garantizadas. Además, la historia está inspirada en una obra de teatro (la cuál vi hace muchos años en el teatro municipal de Valencia) y a su vez esa obra se inspiró en leyendas que provenían de novelas de terror victoriano de bajo costo, pero con una narrativa densa.
It may be bloody, but it is a way of representing the lack of control of emotions when they are pushed to the limit, how injustice can lead to helplessness and this in turn to anger. In short, it shows us how complex human beings are and how everything can change in a single second, that nothing in life is guaranteed, that envy can certainly be very dangerous, and that you should never underestimate anyone.
Puede que sea sangrienta pero es una forma de representar el descontrol de las emociones cuando son llevadas al límite, como la injusticia puede conducir a la impotencia y esta a su vez a la ira, en síntesis nos muestra lo complejo que es el ser humano y como todo puede cambiar en un solo segundo, que nada en la vida está garantizado, que la envidia ciertamente puede ser muy peligrosa y que jamás se debe subestimar a alguien.
Knock at the Cabin
La Cabaña
In this 2018 film, we see the story of a couple made up of two men and their adopted daughter who arrive to spend a few days of rest in a cabin in the woods. However, they are suddenly harassed by a group of strange people who try to break into the cabin. When they finally do, it seems that they do not intend to harm them, but they claim that the world is coming to an end and that the only way to prevent this is for the family to make a very difficult decision (to sacrifice one of them).
En esta película del 2018 vemos la historia de una pareja formada por dos hombres y su hija adoptiva que llegan a pasar unos días de descanso en una cabaña en el bosque, sin embargo, de pronto se ven acosados por un grupo de personas extrañas que intentan ingresar en la cabaña, y cuando finalmente lo hacen, parece que no pretenden hacerles daño, pero aseguran que el mundo está llegando a su fin, y que la única manera de evitarlo es que la familia tome una dificilísima decisión (sacrificar a uno de ellos)

The main reason why I think you should watch it is because it was written and directed by the extremely talented M. Night Shyamalan, who is known for giving tremendous plot twists at the end or near the end of his films, making them unpredictable. In the case of Knock at the Cabin, you feel that the story is pointing towards a goal, you remain alert just like the family occupying the cabin, there is an aura of danger and constant stalking, but at a certain point you begin to question the seemingly “preposterous” arguments of the stalkers, everything seems to make sense and become coherent. Were they right? What is really happening? It's an indescribable feeling that you can only experience by watching this movie. In another sense, the film explores the themes of faith and skepticism, but also love for family, sacrifice, and loyalty. It's based on a book, but I don't know how faithful the plot is because I haven't read it.
La razón principal por la cuál siento que deberías verla es porque fue escrita y dirigida por el talentosísimo M. Night Shyamalan quién se caracteriza por dar tremendos giros argumentales a la trama al final o casi al final de sus películas, así que esto las vuelve impredecibles. En el caso de Knock at the Cabin sientes que la historia apunta a un objetivo, te mantienes alerta al igual que la familia ocupante de la cabaña, hay un aura de peligro y acecho constante pero en determinado punto comienzas a cuestionarte los aparentes "descabellados" argumentos de los acosadores, todo parece tomar sentido y coherencia. ¿Tenían razón? ¿Qué está sucediendo en realidad? es una sensación indescriptible que solo puedes experimentar viendo esta película. En otro sentido el film explora el tema de la fe y el escepticismo, pero también el amor por la familia, el sacrificio y la lealtad. Está basada en un libro pero ignoro que tan fiel sea la trama porque no lo he leído.
The Black phone

This film is more recent, from 2022, and tells the story of a thirteen-year-old boy who, after seeing several children from his community disappear, is confused and wants to know what is happening, but eventually he too is kidnapped by this criminal whom everyone nicknames “The Capturer.” When the boy opens his eyes, he finds himself in a kind of bunker with only a disconnected black telephone, but suddenly, and despite how implausible it sounds, the boy begins to receive calls and, when he answers them, he realizes that they are from the previous victims of the kidnapper and serial killer, and these victims begin to give the boy instructions on how to escape. However, the protagonist's little sister has certain premonitory dreams and, through her gift of clairvoyance, will try to rescue her brother.
Esta película es más reciente, del 2022, nos muestra la historia de un niño de trece años que luego de ver que varios chicos de su comunidad han desaparecido, está desconcertado y desea saber qué está sucediendo, pero eventualmente él también resulta secuestrado por este criminal al que todos apodan "El capturador" Cuando el muchacho abre los ojos se encuentra en una especie de Bunker en el que solo hay telefono negro desconectado, pero de pronto y a pesar de lo inverosímil que esto suena, el niño comienza a recibir llamadas y al atenderlas se da cuenta que se trata de las anteriores victimas del secuestrador y asesino en serie, y estas victimas empiezan a darle instrucciones al muchacho para que intente escapar. Sin embargo, la hermanita del protagonista tiene ciertos sueños premonitorios y a través del don de la clarividencia intentará rescatar a su hermano.

¿Por qué considero que deberías verla?
This film beautifully blends suspense with psychological horror and some supernatural elements such as clairvoyance and ghosts, so the type of horror it deals with does not rely solely on sudden scares, but most importantly, it reinforces the premise that we should fear the living more than the dead. Unlike other films, this one does not present ghosts as the villains of the story. On the contrary, they are an element of salvation, a means of escape. The villain is much more dangerous and tangible, a physical but also psychological threat. However, this in turn reflects the danger behind emotional trauma. What I like most is that it conveys a message of hope, struggle, and resilience.
Esta película mezcla maravillosamente bien el suspenso con el terror psicológico y algunos aspectos sobrenaturales como la clarividencia y los fantasmas, así que el tipo de terror que maneja no depende solo de sustos repentinos, pero lo más importante de todo es que se refuerza esa premisa que afirma que debemos temer más a los vivos que a los muertos. A diferencia de otras películas esta no presenta a los fantasmas como los villanos de la historia, al contrario, son un elemento de salvación, una vía de escape, el villano es mucho más peligroso y tangible, es una amenaza física pero psicológica al mismo tiempo, no obstante esto a su vez refleja el peligro que hay detrás de los traumas emocionales, pero lo que más me gusta es que transmite un mensaje de esperanza, lucha y resiliencia.
