Only Yesterday [Film Analysis] ESP/ENG
Yesterday I had the pleasure of discovering this film, and although, as I've mentioned before, I don't usually watch animated films, this one caught my attention from the start because of the depth of its plot, which any average adult could relate to. In this film, we see Taeko, a young woman from the city, specifically Tokyo, but she's tired of the daily grind and routine, so she takes a few days off work and goes to Yamagata, the town where her sister-in-law and her family live. There, in contact with nature, she reconnects with herself and with those experiences from her past.
Ayer tuve el placer de encontrarme con esta película, y aunque, como he dicho en otras oportunidades, yo no suelo ver películas de animación, esta me llamó mucho la atención desde el inicio pro la profundidad de la trama, ya que cualquier adulto promedio se identificaría con ella. En esta película vemos a Taeko, una joven de ciudad, específicamente de Tokio, pero ella está cansada del ajetreo diario y de la rutina, así que pide unos días de vacaciones en su trabajo y se va a Yamagata, el pueblo de su cuñada y su familia. Allí, en contacto con la naturaleza ella se reencuentra con ella misma y con esas vivencias del pasado.
I think one of the strongest points of this film is its story, as it's very easy for the viewer to connect with it, especially when you're approaching thirty, which is when you begin to be aware of your maturity. For the protagonist, encountering her past self was very important because it helped her understand her present. I was also struck by the film's exploration of the recurring theme of social pressure, particularly in early 1990s Japan, where people lived according to social expectations and standards: "Marriage Age," "Children Age," and so on—elements that play a fundamental role in people's emotional and psychological stability.
Creo que uno de los puntos más fuertes de esta película es su historia, ya que para el espectador es muy fácil conectar con ella, en especial cuando estás cerca de los treinta años que es cuando comienzas a ser consciente de tu madurez. Para la protagonista encontrarse con su "Yo" del pasado fue muy importante porque le ayudó a entender su presente. También llamo mi atención que el film toca el tema de la presión social, tan recurrente, en especial en esa Japón de principio de los años 90, allí la gente vivía en base a expectativas y estándares sociales "Edad para casarse" "Para atener hijos" en fin, elementos que juegan un papel fundamental en la estabilidad emocional y psicológica de las personas.
That connection between the girl she once was and the woman she is today creates the perfect balance she needed, understanding that everything happens according to each person's own rhythm and tastes, without comparisons of any kind; all of this helps her to accept and embrace her individuality.
Esa conexión entre la niña que fue y la mujer que ella es hoy en día crea el balance perfecto que ella necesitaba, entender que todo ocurre según el ritmo y los gustos de cada quien, sin comparaciones de ningún tipo, todo esta la ayuda a aceptar y abrazar su individualidad
It has a beautiful visual style that lends a nostalgic touch and perfectly complements the story's narrative. The music is also captivating and enhances the immersive experience, especially the ambient sound used in the countryside scenes. I think the film plays heavily with duality: Past/Present, Countryside/City, but these contrasts serve to reflect the changes we experience from childhood, changes that are supposed to help us evolve as individuals.
Tiene un estilo visual muy bonito que le da un toque nostálgico y que va en concordancia con la narrativa de la historia, la música también es fascinante y ayuda a que la experiencia sea más inmersiva, sobre todo cuando usan sonido ambiente en las escenas del campo. Creo que la película juega mucho con la dualidad: Pasado/Presente, Campo/Ciudad, pero estos contrastes sirven para reflejar lo cambios a los que estamos expuestas desde la niñez y que se suponen nos ayudan a evolucionar como personas.
