Today I'm going to talk about a movie I recently saw that gave me a lot to think about. Before, when people talked to me about autistic individuals, I mistakenly believed they were mentally isolated, disconnected, and dependent on others for everything. However, nowadays we know that it depends on the degree of autism each person has. Snow Cake, for example, tells the story of Linda, portrayed amazingly well by the wonderful Sigourney Weaver, the same actress from Gorillas in the Mist. Linda not only has autism but also severe OCD (Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder), which manifests as an obsession with order and cleanliness, although, ironically, thanks to this she has a good job as a stocker at a supermarket. She has a daughter, Alex Hughes (Alan Rickman), a lonely man burdened by past trauma. He's driving across Canada and picks up a hitchhiker named Vivienne (Emily Hampshire) who lives in another town. That day, while Vivienne is trying to travel to her village to reunite with her mother, she meets Alex Hughes, masterfully portrayed by Alan Rickman, and practically forces him to give her a ride, or at least part of the way. However, at some point, they are involved in a tragic accident in which Vivienne loses her life. Alex then decides to personally deliver the news to her mother, Linda, and there he discovers her autism. Feeling guilty, he agrees to stay with her for a while to help her.

We, as the audience, along with Alex (the protagonist), learn about what it's like to live with a person with autism. We learn to process their unique way of perceiving life. It's not that Linda was cold; it's simply that she doesn't conform to society's preconceived notions. On the contrary, she lives her life her own way, free from hypocrisy, and the world around her, not understanding her, judges her. Alex realizes this and gradually allows himself to be touched by Linda's light and innocence, which helps him heal his past traumas.

Maggie, Linda's neighbor, is a controversial woman with whom Alex develops a relationship. It is precisely this, along with his experience with Linda and some beautiful words from Vivienne read at her funeral, that makes him reflect on his own life, his past, and the fact that he should no longer run from his fears but face them.

It's worth noting that Sigourney Weaver's performance completely breaks with the stereotypes cinema had accustomed us to, opting for a much more realistic and therefore more organic interpretation. Linda lives a full, completely independent and functional life, but she is often misunderstood by those around her, who struggle to understand her condition and only observe the situation from the outside.

And well, with nothing more to add for the moment, I'll say goodbye until next time, God willing.
