Frankenstein - A creature more human than the monster that created it | Movie Review

Seeing the trailer for Frankenstein was reason enough to eagerly await a film that promised so much, and I knew it wouldn't disappoint me at all. In my case, it was a complete success, living up to expectations. It wasn't perfect, but it did leave me with a good impression. Plus, knowing that Guillermo del Toro was directing it gave it that extra touch of quality.

Ver el trailer de Frankenstein fue motivo suficiente como para esperar con ansias una película que prometía mucho y sabía que no me iba a decepcionar en absoluto. En mi caso fue todo un acierto, cumpliendo con las expectativas, no siendo perfecta pero sí llegando a dejarme buenas impresiones. Además, sabiendo que quien la dirigía era Guillermo del Toro, era algo que le daba ese condimento extra de calidad.

I won't make comparisons with Mary Shelley's version, because I believe this film seeks to offer a different perspective on Frankenstein's “life,” but I will pause to describe what I find interesting and impactful in this new version.

The first thing that struck me was the soundtrack, which perfectly complements a very literary narrative, where the protagonist's words reinforce who he is, conveying feelings of anger, confusion, and passion that somehow end up reaching us. The decision to see Frankenstein in a much more human way than as a blasphemous creation, because at some point you will think that something has been created that should not have been given life, is amazing. The romance that develops in the plot is ideal for making this clear to everyone and allowing us to put ourselves for a moment in the shoes of someone who feels and wants to express themselves, even though they are a complex being.

No haré comparaciones con la versión de Mary Shelley, porque considero que se busca otra perspectiva de "la vida" de Frankenstein, pero sí me detendré a describir lo que me resulta de interés e impacto en esta nueva versión.

Lo primero que me ha impactado es la banda sonora, que logra complementarse de forma perfecta a una narrativa muy literaria, donde las palabras del protagonista refuerzan quién es, transmitiendo sentimientos de ira, desconcierto, pasión, que de alguna manera terminan por llegar a nosotros. La apuesta por ver a Frankenstein de una forma mucho más humana que una creación de blasfemia, porque en algún momento pensarán que se ha creado algo que no debió tener vida, es alucinante. El romance que nace en la trama es ideal para que esto quede a la vista de todos y nos pongamos por un momento en el lugar de alguien que siente y que desea expresarse, aún siendo un ser complejo.

The plot is divided into two parts. On the one hand, it tells the story of Victor, whose life has not been easy, but which led him to complete madness. When he regained his sanity, he had already unleashed the worst thing that human beings could have created, something that went against the laws of anatomy itself. Victor had acquired a cruel and ruthless personality, which, to a greater or lesser extent, would be acquired by his creation. Not inherited, because we would later see that Frankenstein is actually the opposite of a person who had made a serious mistake, but with the exception of being able to receive forgiveness.

As you can see, many factors come together to make the plot a set of things that touch and move us. It also teaches us many things that we may have overlooked in life because of our pride. This is a crucial factor that I consider very important, because it leaves us with something to learn; a great lesson.

The other part tells the story of Frankenstein, who has been considered a mistake because he does not resemble a human being, even though he is made up of human remains. The way he has been defined seemed ideal to me as a way of giving a distinctive approach to his predecessors (the other versions of Frankenstein). Some critics claim that he is not faithful to the monster we all know, and that he even looks like a model. In fact, what they are trying to show us is that there is beauty in something that could be considered a defect. Personally, I think that is the message they are trying to convey. Not all scars are ugly; rather, they tell a life story that we should be proud of for having overcome difficulties.

Con respecto a la trama, ésta está dividida en dos partes. Por un lado se cuenta la historia de Víctor, que no ha sido nada fácil, pero fue motivo por el cuál lo llevó a la locura absoluta, que al volver a estar cuerdo, ya había desencadenado lo peor que el ser humano pueda haber creado, y que iba en contra de las leyes de la propia anatomía. Víctor había adquirido una personalidad cruel y despiadada, que en mayor o menor medida, sería adquirida por su creación. No heredada, porque luego veríamos que Frankenstein, es en realidad lo contrario a una persona que se había equivocado gravemente, pero con la salvedad de poder recibir el perdón.

Como ven, se juntan muchos factores que hacen que la trama tenga un conjunto de cosas que nos llegan y nos conmueven. Además, nos enseña muchas cosas que en la vida tal vez hayamos pasado por alto por seguir nuestro orgullo. Es un factor crucial que considero muy importante, porque nos deja algo sobre qué aprender; una gran enseñanza.

La otra parte cuenta la historia de Frankenstein, que ha sido considerado un error por no ser la semejanza del ser humano, aunque esté conformado sus restos. La forma en que se lo ha definido me pareció ideal como para darle un enfoque distintivo a sus predecesores (las otras versiones de Frankenstein). Algunos críticos aseguran que no es fiel al monstruo que todos conocemos, y que incluso éste se ve como si fuese un modelo. En efecto, lo que nos intentan demostrar es que existe belleza en algo que podría considerarse un defecto. En lo particular, creo que es un mensaje que se intenta reflejar. No todas las cicatrices son feas, sino más bien, cuentan una historia de vida de la que debemos enorgullecernos por haber salido adelante aún con dificultades.

In terms of production, the scenes are varied and splendid. They feature a well-chosen cast of characters who fulfill their roles perfectly. Once again, there is a clear focus on the literary aspect, where the narrative has an enchanting sound, with phrases that move you and touch the most sensitive fibers of your heart.

We may see a grotesque side to Frankenstein, but this is a result of how he has been treated all this time, during which he was different and excluded by everyone. In this situation, we see a character who unleashes his fury, perhaps due to the loss of someone who saw in him a totally benevolent way of life, even under the circumstances of being dead while alive.

A nivel producción, las escenas gozan de variedad y esplendor. Siendo ocupadas por unos personajes muy bien seleccionados, cumpliendo su debido rol. Nuevamente, con un claro enfoque a la parte literaria, donde la narrativa tiene un sonido encantador, con frases que lo conmueven a uno y le llegan a las fibras más sensibles del corazón.

Tal vez veamos una parte grotesca de Frankenstein, pero es producto del trato que ha tenido todo ese tiempo, en el que fue diferente y excluido por todos. En esta situación, veremos a un personaje que desata su furia, tal vez por la pérdida de quien vio en su interior una forma de vida totalmente benévola, aún bajo las circunstancias de estar muerto en vida.

Personally, I can say that I really liked this movie. I read many reviews that were written about it, and I don't agree with them at all. What I recommend is that you see it for yourselves and draw your own conclusions. I read that someone decided not to see it because of someone else's opinion. They could be missing out on a cinematic gem, or at least a moment of good entertainment, with a story that enhances what has been created so far, from a completely different perspective, adaptable to our senses.

En lo personal, puedo decir que esta película me gustó mucho. Leí muchas críticas que se hicieron y no coincido para nada en ellas. Lo que recomiendo es que la vean por ustedes mismos y saquen su propia conclusión. He leído que alguien decidió no verla por lo que otro opinó. Podría estar perdiéndose una joya cinematográfica, o al menos, un momento de buen entretenimiento, con una historia que potencia lo ya creado hasta ahora, desde toda una perspectiva diferente, adaptable a nuestros sentidos.
