Movie Review: Gowok: Kamasutra Jawa (2025)
Hi Movie lovers...
What movie do you watch nowadays?
I'm a huge fan of Reza Rahadian because he's one of the most versatile actors in Indonesia. Despite the negative rumors surrounding him, as long as he hasn't made a directing statement, I'll always enjoy his work. The highlight—his work. Having seen him live several times, especially in his film premieres a few years ago, he's a humble actor. He's become more thoughtful in his words and actions over time. Now, he's switched from acting—still an actor—to directing. So I have no reason not to watch this Reza Rahadian film.
Gowok: Kamasutra Jawa, released last year.

Gowok is a sexual ritual for men about to marry. It is an ancient tradition brought to Java from China during the colonial era. The name gowok itself is taken from the name of the woman who brought this tradition. Therefore, this film centers on a house where the owner performs gowok on prominent people, owned by Nyai Santi. Kamanjaya is one of her customers who accidentally falls in love with Nyai Santi's adopted daughter, Ratri. Initially, Ratri does not want to accept Kamanjaya due to the difference in status, but Kamanjaya's determination makes her relent. Unfortunately, Kamanjaya comes there to be taught sex by Nyai Santi.
Despite their mutual love, Kamanjaya and Ratri's statuses force them to separate. Ratri resolves to exact revenge on Kamanjaya by becoming Peng-Gowok in place of Nyai Santi for Kamanjaya's future son.

In terms of storyline and cinematography, director Hanung Bramantyo is truly adept at crafting the Gowok story into a film that feels sacred. I might be angry about this strange tradition, but there's no denying that the actors' performances are incredibly lively. I absolutely adore Raihanuun's performance as the adult Ratri. Her conflict is unpredictable and creates chaos that ultimately teaches us a lesson. It's best not to continue such strange traditions.
I rate this film 4 out of 5 stars; Entertainment...

Hi, Halo, Annyeong, welcome to my galaxy.
I have so much imagination in my head. Something that I can't achieve as a human and as a girl. So writing is very challenging. Since Junior High School, I have written whatever I want to write. Without skill, I just write what I want to read. Now I have 12th published novels and all of those are romance.
Yeah, I proudly say that I am a passionate author, traveler wannabe, and blogger.
