The tradition of singing while working is very old, it serves to mark rhythm, coordinate tasks, help with concentration and cheer up those who are doing the work, which is usually tiring and repetitive.

A tradição de cantar enquanto trabalha é muito antiga, serve para marcar ritmo, coordenar as tarefas, ajudar na concentração e alegrar um pouco quem está fazendo o trabalho, geralmente cansativo e repetitivo.
Several of the songs shown involve workers in communal labor, groups formed to spin cotton, transform cassava into flour, build walls in clay and wood constructions, harvest and thresh beans, etc. These are songs and customs passed down from generation to generation, bringing neighbors and the community together in collaborative work sessions that usually end with plenty of food and fellowship. In addition to the workers/singers, the documentary also shows performances by groups of artists such as Cia Cabelo de Maria (@ciacabelodemaria on Instagram), who incorporate the songs as art, culture, and spectacle as well.
Vários dos cantos mostrados envolvem trabalhadores em mutirão, grupos formados para fiar algodão, transformar mandioca em farinha, levantar paredes em construções de pau a pique, colher e debulhar feijão, etc. Músicas e costumes que passam de geração para geração, reunindo vizinhos e a comunidade em jornadas de trabalho colaborativo, que geralmente terminam com muita comida e confraternização. Some work songs use the sound produced by the use of tools and materials as percussion, turning them into musical instruments that accompany the voices. The documentary shows the song of the "bata de feijão (bean threshing)", where the beating and kicking of the harvest piles separates the pods from the grains, sung in the countryside in its original function but also in the city, in a "samba de roda" version, this time as a dance and entertainment.
Alguns cantos de trabalhos usam o som provocado pelo uso das ferramentas e materiais manipulados como percussão, virando instrumentos musicais acompanhando as vozes. O documentário mostra a música da "bata de feijão", onde as batidas e chutes nas pilhas da colheita vão separando as vagens dos grãos, cantada no interior em sua função original mas tb na cidade, em uma versão samba de roda, desta vez como dança e entretenimento.
The documentary also recorded testimonies from researchers of work songs, such as the Brazilian Renata Mattar (@renatamattar92) and the Mexican Iván García López from the University of Mexico. The Brazilian explained the medieval origin of some songs, including the use of verses with questions and others with answers, organizing the flow and order of the tasks performed. The Mexican quoted the Japanese poet Matsuo Basho, who believed that poetry originated from work songs. Curiously, he appeared to be wearing a kariushi shirt, typical of Okinawa, whose song, which I translated here with the drawing Ashimiji Bushi (汗水節) - Song of sweating like a water fountain, can also be defined as within the theme.
O documentário tb registrou depoimentos de pesquisadores dos cantos de trabalho, como a brasileira Renata Mattar (@renatamattar92) e o mexicano Iván García López da Universidade do México. A brasileira explicou a origem medieval de alguns cantos, inclusive o uso de versos com perguntas e outros com respostas organizando, o fluxo e a ordem das tarefas executadas. O mexicano citou o poeta japonês Matsuo Basho que acreditava que a poesia tinha como origem os cantos de trabalho, curiosamente ele pareceu estar vestido com uma camisa kariushi, típica de Okinawa, cuja canção que traduzi aqui com o desenho Ashimiji Bushi (汗水節) - Canção suando em bicas, pode tb ser definida como dentro do tema.
Among the Brazilian songs, the documentary also showed those used by cowboys to call and guide cattle, called "aboio." Entre as canções brasileiras o documentário mostrou tb aquelas utilizadas pelos vaqueiros para chamar e orientar o gado, chamadas de aboio. Ampliando o tema incluiram músicas de trabalho da Venezuela e Peru, onde os escravizados usavam caixas de madeira para marcar o ritmo, pois diferente do Brasil havia a proibição do uso de tambores com couro. Aliás, a mesma proibição do batuque africano tb aconteceu nos EUA, onde os cantos de trabalho deram origem ao estilo de música conhecida como blues.
