TV series review: Pluribus [EN/PT]

This new series in Apple TV was the recent work from Vince Gilligan who previously directed Breaking Bad and its spin off Better Call Saul. I confess I 'm not an ethusiastic fan of Breaking Bad and barely watch a few episodes of Better Call Saul but I liked Pluribus, or Plur1bus as written in the opening. I read an interview with the director who said it was intentionally made to confront the actual imposed TikTok rhythm and bring back the calm pace of TV. I felt that, few things happen in the episodes, focusing in the plot evolving with its mix of (for me) science fiction, zumbi movies and comedy. With these things turned upside down, of course.

In a world self-contaminated by a type of virus whose recipe came from space, only 12 individuals strangely managed to escape. The epidemic left everyone cheerful and happy, reminding the book Brave New World and also Infinite Jest, the latter resurfacing thanks to the analogy with the hypnotic scrolling habit of Instagram feeds. The main character, immune, is a bestselling author and intelligent, grumpy, cynical, arrogant, and antisocial. Living in a cheerful, naive, collectivist, mathematically efficient, and violence-free world has become hell for her.

The series is number 1 among the most watched on its channel and @chris-chris92 and @jcrodriguez also commented here recently. I personally thought it was funny and biting to see the main character in front of symbols of US power, trying to convince the others that haven't been contaminated, all of them with different nationalities. Phrases like "we have to save the world," coming out of her mouth, end up sounding like the speeches of politicians and military personnel we see every day on the news. Some scenes of the "zombies," this time all friendly, clean, and well-dressed, resemble the old video game Lemmings, which in turn also inspired the Minions. As far as I remember, the most memorable scene from that game is them all falling in a line off a cliff, following the leader like sheep.

PS: Watching the series made me want to visit New Mexico, the home of the main character. I had seen photos of the regional architecture that blends indigenous elements with Spanish colonial styles, but I didn't know it was so ubiquitous.

Thanks for commenting! I didn't realize that the previous series were also with locations in New Mexico. It remembers me the directors John Waters and his link with Baltimore and Woody Allen in early career doing the same with New York. Happy 2026, keep safe and good luck again!!

Honestly, reading this and seeing the direct reference to Instagram and TikTok makes me think more about something I've noticed. Sometimes I go on one of them to look at or search for something for a moment, and I can end up wasting half an hour or more looking at nonsense. I've realized this and tried to stop, so this series should be interesting to watch. I'm going to look for it.

Thanks for commenting, yes, I've read that this attention capture that social media uses on us is a science that envolves brain chemistry (dopamine, serotonin, etc) and software algorithms. Pluribus can be seen also as a joke to the recente generative AI trend where people are considering talk to their robots as fair therapy. Happy 2026, keep safe and good luck again!!!
