Movie At Midnight In The Red Light

Two weekends ago, my partner and I went to see the movies. We're a fan of late-night movies and there's only one cinema (that I know of as of this time) that has movie schedules up to 1 AM, that is Toho Cinemas Shinjuku.

Toho Cinemas Shinjuku is located in the red light district of Tokyo, Kabukicho in Shinjuku. I have featured Kabuchiko in my blogs before because I frequent this place but I don't think I have shown you what this place looks like from midnight to dawn.

Toho Cinemas Shinjuku has that noticeable Godzilla at the top of the building

It's not really all the time that this theater has cinema schedules that are passed midnight. It's just that this weekend they have extended the movie time schedule for one particular movie - the movie that we have watched - One Piece Film: RED. I already made a post about the movie and my thoughts about it last week.

Last April when the new Detective Conan (or Case Closed in some countries) movie was released, we also watched the movie at midnight in this cinema. I think they anticipate that the movie will have a lot of viewers so they open til late, maybe for that Saturday the movie is released and it may extend to next Saturday too depending on the situation.

We took the last train to Shinjuku that Saturday night. There were a few people when we walked from Shinjuku Station to Kabukicho. Probably because it just stopped raining. That whole Saturday it rained so hard and just stopped a few hours before midnight.

Crossing the street to go to Kabukicho from Shinjuku Station

I was expecting that since it rained, there would also be a few people in Kabuchiko or maybe none. I imagined it to be a ghost town. But well, there were still a few people wandering in the night in this red light district.

The clubs and pubs area

To the entrance/exit. Lots of food restaurants in this area

Restaurant and gaming area

I think we had a great view of the place from where we were standing. We're just outside the cinema building. We haven't entered it. There's still a lot of time before the movie starts.

It's actually messy. There were trash everywhere. Maybe it's not so visible in the photo but there was. There was even a broken umbrella a few steps away from where we were.

Some people came from nowhere

Few moments later, there were groups of people gathering in the streets of Kabukicho. I didn't notice where they came from though. I was preoccupied with the people falling in line in the gaming area, as if there's something valuable or limited edition. I didn't investigate the matter fully because my partner wanted to stop by the convenience store before going to the theater.

Late night restaurants and clubs with their staff waiting outside looking for customers

I waited for him outside the kombini (how Japanese calls convenience store). I think it was a bad idea because I was in the clubs and pubs area, they might bring me somewhere and I wouldn't be able to pay. LOL

While standing there, I saw a girl being guided by a male guy, definitely a host, telling her the ATM's location. Hmm.. 😏

We didn't stay long in the kombini. A few seconds of standing outside made me a little scared for my life. 😅

Going to the theater

We're now going to the theater. It's located on the 3rd floor of the building. The shops and restaurants on the first floor were already closed at that time. And we didn't check the hotel and the head of Godzilla located in the 8F. Maybe for another day. It's midnight LOL

So far, I haven't tried the 4D in this theater. I have watched it in IMAX but that was in Toho Cinemas Hibiya.

Food area

Ticket corner

Printing our tickets that I bought online a few hours before going to the cinema

I felt safe here in the theatre than outside. 😂

After printing our tickets, we bought food and drinks. A movie is a great excuse to buy popcorn. 😂 I think 90% of the time I watch a movie in the cinemas, I buy popcorn.

My first churro in Japan (or maybe in my entire life? I forgot)

The churro was so long and the container I was holding's built for popcorn and drinks, not for the churros. I was so careful for it not to break. Luckily, it didn't.

We got to the cinema lobby so early. We're watching the movie on Screen 9 and it's still being prepared. Couldn't go inside yet so we had no choice but to stand and wait. There were seats just outside this lobby, but it's not allowed to bring food and drinks outside. There were no seats in this lobby. Would be better if there were.

While waiting, I was busy looking around while my partner went outside for a while.

The souvenirs corner

Souvenirs corner and a crane game!

Minion near the entrance

Candies!

Ads for the upcoming movies

We didn't wait that long to enter the theater.

Around the cinema premises

Here we go!

Luxury, premium, and normal seats are available in this theater

Premium seat looks like this

The movie finished at around 3:30 AM. When we went out, there were still a few people around Kabukicho. I imagined them to be going home or waiting for the first train.

Going out Toho Cinemas Shinjuku

The gaming area and going further, some clubs and pubs

The people falling in line was outside the sign GiGo but they're gone already. I wonder what that line was about.

Restaurants and some clubs near the other entrance/exit path

This place is really lively even at this time. I wonder how it looks in the morning. Maybe this is one of the places in Tokyo that never sleeps.

We didn't stay in the Red Light District further. After the movie, we walked back home.

We just crossed the tunnel from Kabukicho and it's so quiet in this side

Other side of Shinjuku is like a ghost town unlike the Red Light District

Does it look like the PS5?

The other areas in Shinjuku also sleep. 😅

Watching a movie on a Saturday midnight is really fun and peaceful. It's not so crowded so it doesn't drain me that much. You could choose where to be seated and you won't have someone beside you.

The only thing to note is not to be alone especially if you're a woman. Since the cinema is located in the Red Light District, it's still kinda scary to be alone if you're not used to these kinds of places.

Thanks for reading!
See you around! じゃあ、またね!

I adored watching all these pictures of sleepy shinjuku. I only often saw it in Anime 😆
Thanks for sharing some nice shots 💜
And this triggered a longing for a scope like that!
Movie at midnight! And to that, it’s Conan!
Unfortunately in our country we don't have such opportunities.

avatar

Thank you!
Yes, the first movie I have watched during midnight was Conan. I really like Conan and One Piece so I don't want to miss their movies. 😅
I understand some countries don't have these time schedules. Maybe they should have one or maybe it also depends on the place.

avatar
(Edited)

I haven’t watched none but got some peers who are die-hard fan of both.
And each given time, they will not let slide the chance to shove it in me or nag to start 😆 It’s impossible not to be familiarized with Conan and some major One-piece folks.
My folks even named me as a Real-life Zoro saying I resemble him a lot in characteristics 😂

Yeah I guess for the security reason! Well, I'll just have to try it in another country.

avatar

You should definitely watch these animes! They are popular for a reason 😅

Wowww I really love how explicit you are with your posts and the amount of wonderful pictures you show, it's like we go through everything with you, we missed to go with you to see the movie hahaha.

Thanks for showing us those beautiful and colorful places, although you say that the streets were full of garbage you can't see it, what you see are wonderful photos.

Hugs friend @wittyzell 🤗🥰☺️😘💕🌹✨

avatar

Thank you @dayadam for joining me on this virtual tour. Yeah, maybe the amount of trash was not a lot that you could see in the photos. But there was! 😅
It's bright here even at night maybe because this area never sleeps so my photos are also bright.

avatar
(Edited)

The first thing I noticed bakit ang linaw ng camera mo Witty? I inner self remindede me again to buy for a brand new phone to have a decent picture😂.

Movie? Years na yata I haven't been in Cinema😂. So mahal na kasi😁

Looking at the building structures seems like here in the Philippines ano? I was curious, was it safe to roam around at midnight on the streets if ever you are alone?

avatar

Hahaha! Malinaw ba? Maybe the bright lights helped with the photos. 😅
I didn't edit them. These images are really taken by my phone.
I had a 2nd hand phone too before and the photos are also decent. I think it doesn't matter if it's new or not, as long as the camera is great, your photos will be great.

How much is the cinema there? The last time I was there, I think it was around 200 pesos.

It's not really advisable to roam the streets at midnight but it's still safe. I always go out at these times in my neighborhood and seems safe. I think if the town is safe, it's fine to roam around. The last train schedules are usually at midnight, so I think it's still safe at this time.

avatar

haha my phone camera is no longer good in taking photos, that's why thinking to buy for a new one but not in my list of priorities for this year. Unless tumaas ang crypto which I think malabo this year ano?

I think it cost almost P500 na, dependi sa movie.

Kapag here kasi after watching several news, parang nakakatakot na gumala.

avatar

Dito kasi ang daming magagandang 2nd hand phones. You'll never notice the difference between a brand new phone and a 2nd hand phone. Hopefully meron din dyan so you don't need to pay a huge chunk of money just to get a nice phone with a decent camera.
But well, go pa rin sa priorities.

Ang mahal naman!! If the salary remains the same, it's really considered a luxury to watch a movie na.

Oo nga eh, it's not super safe there to roam around at night though I'd been doing that when I was there. 😂

avatar

The pictures of the outside reminded me of itaewon from the Kdrama itaewon class

avatar

Aaah I remember that kdrama. Itaewon's equal would be Shibuya or Roppongi in Japan though. That's what most of my friends say. This place is lively like Itaewon but it has a different vibe. 😅

avatar

Bet ko yung the ghost town na part, ang sarap maglakad kapag nag iisa ka eh o sadyang napakaintrovert ko lang ata 🥲. Pero kung dyan ako mapadpad someday, super thankful talaga ako 🤣

avatar

It's fine to roam around at this time at night but it's still safe to be with someone. 😅
I also don't like the crowd that's why we chose to watch movies at this time.
However, no more train pauwi so either you gotta wait for the first train or take taxi home or walk. 😂
If your house is near, it's fine to walk. Lapit lang bahay e kaya naglakad lang kami, mga 40mins lakad though. 😂

avatar

I have a special affinity to the night Tokyo, because this is the only time we were left to walk around freely. 😁

And yes, some pets of this place seem to never sleep. The spot out of Shibuya station is a place that never remains human free.

Visiting the sienna in the late evenings seems to be a very wise choice. You really can enjoy the movie uninterrupted.

avatar

Ah yes, I remembered you telling me that you roam around the streets of Tokyo at night time. 😅 That was really an adventure and with friends, it's really so fun!

So far I have only been to Shinjuku and Shibuya around midnight to dawn and I agree, these places never ran out of humans. I heard Roppongi also never sleeps but I haven't been there at these times so I cannot attest to that.

We're already a fan of watching movies at this time. If I'm with my friends, we usually watch the movies in the afternoon but when I'm with my partner, he doesn't really want to go out at daytime so night time it is. Plus our house is just near so it's fine to walk home.

avatar

Oh, now that you mentioned Roppongi, I recall walking through it too. And, well, there was party everywhere, and a lots of people! This was about 4 in the morning, so I guess this may be the place that really never sleeps and the party is 24/7 😁

avatar

The party ends in the morning. The people here are so active at night 😂 Or maybe it's time for another group of people. Shift work 😂

avatar

The streets look really great. Maybe you should do some street photography huh? I would love to be there and watch some movies but I'm sure I wouldn't understand anything because of the language barrier 😂.

avatar

I really like taking photos of the streets. Maybe soon, I will. You'll just be surprised to see me in photography communities. 😅

At first, I also don't understand watching movies in Japanese but eventually, I got used to it. The scenes in the film helped me understand what's going on. And if there are words I don't understand, I ask my partner after the movie, only if I remember them. Watching it in Japanese also helped me learn the language.

avatar

Watching something is definitely a great way to learn a new language. Let's see which communities I'll see you in soon 😶.

avatar

Hello witty
Nice bloging. The visuals are expectacullar.Red light area is awesome.💖💖 Thanks for sharing.

avatar

Thank you @th4488! It's pretty lively here at night but the time I went here it's raining so there were only a few people around. Still it's lively.

avatar

I'm curious of the of the Red Light District.🤔 I've known Japan as quite and peaceful. Anong meron sa Red Light District?🤔

avatar

Don't google the meaning. 😂
Kidding aside, it's where the SPG clubs and pubs are. 😂
That's why it's lively here at night.

avatar

avatar

I think that depends on the place and if maganda ka hahahah
So far, I've been walking around at night (sometimes dawn) and haven't encountered such harassment 😅

avatar

It seems you enjoyed a lot.

The way you described was really very well and i enjoyed reading it.

Photographs were captured very well. It was giving me feeling like i exist in those place and enjoying time how you described.

avatar

Thank you so much @intishar! I really enjoyed it and I'm glad to know you enjoyed reading my post too.

avatar

must be nice sitting on that luxury seat 😍

avatar

Mahal! HAHA
We tried the premium, but di ka maka bump arms sa jowa so it's best to just choose the normal seat when you have someone with you. 😂

avatar

Beautiful Clicks as always Witz, Hope you had Fun, much Love to you❤️.

avatar

Thank you @queenstarr! I guess I'll join the photography communities here on the chain if you think these are beautiful 😅

avatar

I am amazed you aren't there already, you'll make a valuable member, they'll be pleased to have you over. trust💕

avatar

I'm actually shy and think my skills are not so good. And I just usually take photos on my phone.
But I'll guess I'll try to explore the community 😅
Maybe they will accept me LOL

avatar

I really love this kind of streets!
The pictures makes me want to go in Japan in my dreams! ♥️😍
Nice shots!

avatar

Thank you! Hopefully you can come to this place in the future!

avatar

Grabeh nakakalula yung taas ng mga building 🙈, at sobrang ganda talaga ng Japan. Dati gusto ko din talagang makapunta jan pero hanggang pangarap lang yun dahil wala talaga akong kachance chance kahit one percent manlang.Lol.

avatar

Marami nga mga buildings dito, interesting to see talaga.
Haha! HMmm, if wala ka chance, sige mag enjoy na lang sa pa tour ko 😂
But I still hope you can really visit this place someday with your family. Who knows naman dba

avatar

Oh witty, you're lucky to have a partner who's also fan of midnight movies, when the vibes matches it becomes so memorable and fun experience.

I guess Haven't watched that movie yet but I'll look into it.

telling her the ATM's location. Hmm..

I'm too innocent for this to understand :( sed loif

The cinema looks empty tho feels like you're the only ~ Booked whole cinema damn so romantic.

The place for real is lively and some good views. Totally agree midnight time is perfect to watch movies or wonder in streets like others.

Have a great and wonderful day ahead!!!

avatar

I'm too innocent for this to understand :( sed loif

You definitely are too innocent!
That means the woman will have to spend more money to pay in the host club 😅

I think the cinema was empty because there were other cinema screens showing the same movie. I think many people went to see the movie in IMAX and we watched it in Dolby Atmos cinema.

I realized I forgot to reply to you and it's been 2 days already. Sorry!

avatar

Oh, host club something new to me.

Haha that's nice, I just download from websites and watch at home. Very sed loif!

No worries witty, I can relate with it!!!

Have a great day to you!

avatar

There are a lot of host and hostess clubs in Japan. You'll also just be surprised there are so many ads in the streets of the face of their most handsome host or most beautiful hostess. 😅

Have a great day to you as well!

avatar

These pictures are gorgeous and that movie theater looks really cool. I'm jealous it's been a while since I've had a churro! Love the minion statute

avatar

Wow, you were able to stand outside all alone 😂. I've never visited a cinema at night though. Seems fun I really hate when I'm watching a movie and someone at my fronts just stands up or something 😂. Makes me wanna injure him😂

avatar

Hahahaha! That's brutal 😂
But yeah, it's kinda annoying if that happens. I completely understand you.
Watching it at this hour avoids that problem ☺️
I was also surprised that I did that. It was kinda dangerous but lucky, Japan's still safe

avatar

Which I could 😪 Nigeria isn't that safe though 😂.
I just have to try and hold my anger and comments when a dude decides to stand up and stretch 😢

avatar

That's a bit scary. Best to not provoke someone then. 😑
