I Watched This Movie For The Plot, Or Not

It's been difficult relaxing with a movie or two these days because there just isn't time but I was able to sneak in one movie recently. It took about a week to finish the movie, but I did it anyway. Don't fret, it isn't even up to 2 hrs long, I just couldn't watch it at a stretch.

The Plot

Spiderhead is a science fiction Netflix Original about a penitentiary that serves as a research lab where the lab rats are the prisoners. It stars Chris Hemsworth who plays Steve Abnesti, the head of the Spiderhead research lab.

The prisoners in this very comfortable penitentiary all have one thing in common - they committed deadly crimes and they volunteered to spend the rest of their jail term being used to test drugs at the Spiderhead.

The drugs have a 'high' effect and also the ability to alter their perception of everything. They volunteered to be at the Spiderhead quite alright but for every time they have to be administered the drug, their consent is required.

It all looks okay and everyone acts right with the hopes of getting an appeal and leaving the Spiderhead in no time. Not until Steve keeps encouraging one of the inmates, Jeff to give the consent to administer a particular drug 'Darkenfloxx' to other inmates.

Jeff gets suspicious at Steve's persistent requests to give this drug which causes one to fear and become extremely dangerous. It is at this point Jeff realizes the Spiderhead might not be what it seems and the research is aimed at an entirely different cause.

My Thoughts

Apart from the fact that I didn't have time to watch this movie at a go, I also wasn't too eager to see it because it's not really an action or suspense-filled movie. That isn't a bad thing, the movie is really chilled and I liked the vibe.

I'm not a big fan of sci-fi movies but I like it when the sci-fi aspect is minimal and not all over the place. I kept trying to wrap my head around the implant for the drugs and if it'd be possible to actually have that in real life.

It's not far-fetched, we might possibly get to that point sooner or later where we would control implants in our bodies with our phones.

The penitentiary had me wanting to commit a crime, I personally would like to live on a mountain in the middle of nowhere in a high-tech apartment. If I was an inmate, I'd want to go there but the conditions seem bizarre and disturbing.

This research doesn't seem like what should be done on humans but on animals, it's quite questionable but I guess freedom is more important.

I didn't feel much from this movie and I'm quite indifferent, I only watched this for the plot - and I mean Chris Hemsworth. Yes, he was the entire plot because it's freaking Thor and he always looks good 😉 Jokes aside though, he was my favourite character.

His ability to cajole the inmates is one for the books and I liked that there was a little backstory to this character and the reason for his role in all of this.

I'd rate Spiderhead 5/10. It's really just average and nothing special about it.

Have you seen it? What do you think?

I am attracted to this kind of movies where everything starts perfectly but little by little the true intentions are revealed. This movie has a good cast, and it has its touches of drama, action and suspense.

Like you I don't think it's easy to take a movie seriously with Hemsworth in it, he's so ingrained in the role of Thor, it seems your 5/10 score doesn't make it a good choice.

You've perfectly described this movie. Even though it's not really exciting, I looked forward to the reveal because of the slow build-up

I havn't seen the movie yet..

I like anything Sci-fi as long as it's well told and isn't too much of make believe. It's really nice to see Chris in a movie where there isn't too much action, his face just tells action and weird remarks, lol.

I have loads of other films to see and I'm hoping I'll not use one week for one, it'll take a lifetime to complete..but I'll save this movie up for later too

I watched this movie because of Chris Hemsworth too.

I had this thought too at the beginning 😂 till I saw the effects of darkenfloxx 😂
