I'm Okay With 'I'm Not Okay With This'

Sydney is a simple teenager who's trying to navigate life and the torrid world of high school since the loss of her dad. With the pressure of being an assistant mum to her baby brother and also understanding her sexuality, her life gets even weightier when she finds out she has strange powers.

If you like Stranger Things, you might like I'm Not Okay With This. At least that's what my husband said when he saw me watching it. I haven't seen Stranger Things myself, but from the trailers, I can tell both shows have a similar vibe.

I avoided watching I'm Not Okay With This because I wasn't thrilled by the trailer. It had a girl on a blood-stained dress running down a road and I wasn't feeling it (trigger warning if you don't like blood). It just didn't look like something I'd enjoy and I saved it for a boring day.

I eventually started watching it and I didn't find it bad at all. First, I liked the small town scenery and it gave me a Smallville vibe when the main character, Sydney discovered she had superpowers. The superpower part was so unexpected and I liked that it was a major part of the story.

The show began with Sydney introducing us to her highschool life where she's not one of the cool kids and she's more like the weirdo tomboy. This is a trope we're used to already, I saw it in the last few high school shows I saw on Netflix. It's usually girl's father not around or dead, and the girl finds it difficult navigating life - basically, the daddy issues trope.

I personally don't get tired of it but I know it would definitely be a bore to many at this point. What I like about the Sydney character in this show is that she doesn't care about fitting in with everyone else. She does her own thing and stays in her lane until the unexpected happens.

Like every superhero character, she is overwhelmed at her discovery and tries to understand if she's a bad guy or a good guy, making a few messes here and there.

The first season was basically an introduction to Sydney's new discovery and I was enjoying it until it ended abruptly. It had only 7 episodes that averaged 25 minutes so it came to a quick end. I was so pained about it and even more pained to discover that there were no plans to renew the show.

The end of season 1 was mind-blowing, literally (spoiler alert...hehe) and now, I don't know what to do with this information if there isn't going to be a second season. I hope it comes back though. I need to see how Sydney handles her powers, what happens next after the blood bath in the end, and what's up with the little romance between Sydney and....

I don't want to ruin it for you, you should watch this if you like high schoolers and superpowers. It's got a little unexpected twists and a bit different from the regular.

Have you seen this show? What do you think?

Smallvile? The movie with Clark Kent?🤔

Meanwhile, I don't take your movie recommendations or reviews for granted. I'd certainly check this one out too.

Yeah that one. It had the small town superhero vibe like Smallville.
