One of my acquaintances was randomly talking about how well she spent her weekend and the movies that made her weekend worthwhile. As the word “movies” was mentioned, I got very intrigued. Without giving out any spoilers, I asked her to tell me about the best movie she'd seen over the weekend. “It's titled Heart Eyes. It's a horror movie, and I really enjoyed it.”

She had just ticked a few of my ‘movie requirements boxes’ without even knowing it. Catchy movie title? Check. Movie Genre? Check. Remarks? Check. I quickly jotted down the title of that movie on my notepad to be watched soon. Today, I'd be reviewing the movie “Heart Eyes” but first, I'd like to share my initial thoughts about the movie. Judging from the fact that it's a horror movie titled Heart Eyes, I felt there were going to be many scenes where the human eyes were plucked out and their hearts ripped out but nothing of that sought happened. This was actually one of the chillest horror films I've seen in a long time.

About The Movie

Ally, a love weary ad executive is at the verge of losing her job because she barely believes in love but is tasked with the job of creating a valentine themed ad. Jay, her optimistic new co-worker swoops in to save the day. As they work together, they become a target for the heart eyes killer who targets lovers/ couples on Valentines Day. The thing about the heart eyes killer is he always, always ends the lives of his victims.

Ally and Jay, who aren't a couple, try to explain to the murderous psychopath that they're just co-workers but even they themselves find this hard to believe. Left with two options; end the killer or be ended by the killer, Ally and Jay strive to save their lives.

This horror comedy film was released on the 7th of February, 2025, just a week to Valentine's Day. The film has a runtime of 97 minutes and was directed by Josh Ruben. It stars actors like Mason Gooding, Olivia Holt, Jordana Brewster and Gigi Zumbado.

My Opinion

From the start to finish of this film, I was hooked and not in a terrified way. Every proceeding scene came with a touch of delight. I like that the plot of this particular horror film didn't follow the regular jump scare storyline.

Heart Eyes is a bottle film with just a handful of characters who performed explicitly. I was really impressed by the passion each character put into acting their roles. It would have been a bad scenario if the only set of people that viewers were watching performed poorly. My favorite character was Ally because we shared similar views on certain matters discussed during the course of the movie. To top it all up, the roles she played were really relatable and realistic.

The themes of love, romance, identity and deception were prominently portrayed in this movie. Jay was a hopeless romantic who didn't hesitate to shower his love interests with a generous amount of love and affection, irrespective of how many times they broke his heart. Ally on the flip side had just come out of a somewhat abusive relationship and had made up her mind to remain single because all love stories always end.

One of my favourite scenes from this movie was when the heart eyes killer was in pursuit of Jay and Ally and actively striking to kill anyone in his way. Jay and Ally tumbled on each other and somehow fell on each other and as they were having a “lovey dovey starring in the eye” moment the serial killer bolted towards them and in unison they chorused “we're not together!” Touch.

Recommendation and Rating

Heart Eyes was an interesting and refreshing watch that poked fun at the traditional rom-com tropes while showing flashes of horror. If you're not a hopeless romantic, like myself, I believe you would appreciate this very much.

The creative kills, entertaining script and flawless blend between romance and comedy are some of the reasons why I'll give this film an 8/10 rating. It is absolutely worth the watch.

Yo, Heart Eyes sounds like such a cool pick. I love how you linked it to the whole lovey-dovey but kinda wild vibe of the holiday. The heart-shaped glasses and that horror twist? Totally fun for a high school movie night. Did it feel more romantic or spooky to you? Awesome post, I’m adding this to my watchlist.

It gave off the not too spooky yet not too romantic vibe for me. This balance is one of the reasons why I enjoyed seeing the movie.
