If "the more you watch, the more captivated you get" was a movie, it would be Missing 2023. I was surfing through Netflix a few days ago and I came across this movie. At first, I was like "the name has already given the movie out" and I wasn't wrong after all. Most movies that involve people missing are sometimes horror movies and so I decided to check the movie out. Did I make a mistake by doing this?

The movie is basically about an eighteen year old girl, June, who had to find out the hard way about her parents' past. Sometimes I want to witness some drama but not this much.

June lived with her mom(Grace). Like every other teenager, she basically just wanted to live life and be free. Her mom announced that she'd be out of town for a vacation with her lover. That news was melodious to June's ears. Her mom gave her clear instructions, one of which was "clear out your voicemail incase I need to tell you something important". June shrugged that off too. All June could hear was "it's time to party!"

This vacation was supposed to be for the weekend and Grace was supposed to be back by Monday but she wasn't. This sent June into an immediate state of anxiety and worry. She was right to be worried because it was strange. Her mom wasn't returning her text, her location was turned off. I was like she had varnished from the surface of the earth.

June decided to search for her mom. Coming up with different ideas wasn't so hard as she was a very smart girl. She involved as many people as she could and a search party was set up to find her mom but the question is, did her mom really travel?

In the midst of all the searching, something strange happened. June's mom had told her that her father died years ago. Well, June didn't know who to believe anymore as her father (James) was standing right in front of her.

Cast

  • Nia Long as Grace
  • Tim Griffin as James
  • Storm Reid as June
  • Ken Leung as Kevin
  • Amy Landecker as Heather.

This movie has a nice build-up of thrills. As things get more complicated, you want to know what the way forward is. Even when June was led to dead ends with her clues, I still wanted to know what's next.

In general, I would rate the movie a 7/10. Wondering where the remaining three went? Well, let me tell you about it.

There were some scenes where the viewers were left in the dark. At some point, June was abducted by her dad(James) . We didn't even know what led to her abduction and the next thing, James was lying dead on his work table. Why wasn't the villain able to carry out at least 50% of his evil plan before he died? What sort of a villain was he?😅 I guess the viewers are supposed to figure that out by themselves.

Second, the twist was just too much. At some point, I lost track of what was happening. Clues were coming in from every angle and yet the clues weren't even tangible. It was really an abyss of confusion.

One thing I learnt from this movie is "always give a listening ear to the people around you". All this drama would have been avoided if June had taken out a few minutes of her time to listen to what her mother had to say.

Nonetheless, if you by any chance you like crime thrillers, then you should check it out. You'd figure out how to solve crimes from a different perspective :-)

With that, I've come to the end of the review. Thank you so much for reading this far.

With love, wongi ✨
