You know, I was sorting through some things over the weekend and came across the VHS of Atlantis: The Lost Empire , and someone was talking about how underrated this movie was at the time. That's why today I wanted to revisit this cult Disney film that had a lot to offer, both in terms of theme and characters, but has been the least talked about. So, here are my impressions and why you can't miss it if you haven't seen it yet.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire …
Directed by Kirk Wise and Gary Trousdale, Disney brought us to the big screen in 2001, an adventure-filled animation, a fantasy and science fiction story based on a literary and philosophical myth named in the writings of Plato. It featured the voices of actors Michael J. Fox, James Garner, Cree Summer, Don Novello, among others.
The film was not well received, leading to the cancellation of a sequel series they had planned, however, I just found out if they released a film, video, I really didn't know how things went there, I think it was only released on DVD itself, called Atlantis: Milo's Return, even some of the voices were replaced, but I couldn't talk about it because I didn't see it, I think I'll look for it later.
What's the plot about?…
After some scenes of the megatsunami that threatened the city of Atlantis and the queen of that empire consumed by the crystal that protects everyone, we find ourselves in 1914 with the young Milo Thatch, a young and peculiar linguist and cartographer who works in a museum; in addition to being obsessed with finding the lost city of Atlantis, following in the footsteps of his late grandfather. After being fired from the museum, he gets a unique opportunity when his grandfather's old friend, Mr. Whitmore, who was not only a millionaire, but also wanted to finance the expedition to find that lost empire.
Milo gladly accepts, embarking into the depths of the sea with a crew led by Commander Rourke. After intense challenges on their way to find Atlantis, they finally reach their destination, but, to their surprise, the place was inhabited (believing they would not find citizens), meeting Kida, the princess of the Empire, who reveals that they have forgotten their history and technology, so Milo will help her rediscover her past thanks to the knowledge he has of it; the film will take us on this adventure to know the lost Empire and the fight to protect the heart of Atlantis.
Personal opinion
This movie is one of my favorites from Disney, its aesthetics and story always captivate me and it saddens me that it has not received the deserved praise, its failure at the box office and that it had a more comic book and action-adventure style that, apparently, did not resonate with the public at the time, I have not even seen that live-action remake, which right now seems to dominate the studio's cinematographic world, although I think it is better, so as not to ruin the story, at least they made it like the film "How to surrender your dragon", in which the characters were more in-depth.
What I like about this film is that, in addition to its aesthetics, which I like because it was a different style than what the studio had been bringing us, the setting and the characters they presented to us, the one of pursuing what you have dedicated so much of your life to, even if they didn't believe you, even so, you did not intend to give up and managed to surround yourself with those who were willing to trust in the knowledge you had acquired, were the attractive elements that caught my attention. Adding that, this whole tale of Atlantis was extremely captivating. A civilization under the sea? I think that for a child it is intriguing and lets your imagination run wild.
Positive points…
-A unique visual aesthetic, with distinctive character designs.
-A fairly mature story, with attractive literary references.
-All the characters are memorable, even when they are secondary, since they have their specific appearances on stage, which leave their essence.
-A great and exceptional musical section, and the father of all Latin Americans (Chayanne) performed the performance in Spanish, which makes it even more memorable for me.
Negative points…
-The pace of the story, which doesn't allow for a deeper understanding of the characters, but it really doesn't feel that fast for an animated film.
-At the time, it was criticized for the tone it used, since it wasn't even for a children's audience and for adults it felt very simple.
-Its huge failure at the box office.

Just like Treasure Planet and other films, Atlantis, at the time did not generate profits for its studio, but has had greater significance than many others, it has been part of the cinematic culture, with a unique story and visual elements that have made it a reference to explore with other visual styles that provide greater variety and do not focus on a single character design and even on the environment and objects that are part of the narrative that is being developed.

¿Saben? El fin de semana estuve acomodando unas cosas y me topé con el VHS de Atlantis: El Imperio perdido, asimismo de una persona hablando sobre lo poco valorada que fue, en su momento, esta película, por ello, hoy quise rememorar este filme de culto de Disney que tenía mucho por explotar, en cuanto a la temática y los personajes, pero ha sido la menos hablada. Así que, aquí les dejo mis impresiones y porque no pueden perdérsela, si aún no la han visto.
Atlantis: The Lost Empire …
Dirigida por Kirk Wise y Gary Trousdale, el estudio de Disney para el año 2001, nos trajo en pantalla Grande, una animación llena de aventura, una historia de fantasía y ciencia ficción basada en un mito literario y filosófico nombrada en los escritos de Platón. Contó con las voces de los actores Michael J. Fox, James Garner, Cree Summer, Don Novello, entre otros.
La película no tuvo una buena recepción, cancelando una serie que tenían pensado como secuela, sin embargo y que, me acabo de enterar si lanzaron una película, video, realmente no supe cómo fue la cuestión ahí, creo que fue lanzado únicamente en DVD mismo, llamado Atlantis: El regreso de Milo, incluso algunas voces fueron reemplazadas, pero no podría hablar de ella, porque no la vi, creo que la buscaré después.
¿De qué va la trama?…
Luego de, unas escenas del megatsunami que amenazaba la ciudad la Atlántida y la reina de ese imperio consumida por el cristal que protege a todos, nos encontramos en el año 1914 con el joven Milo Thatch, un joven y peculiar lingüista y cartógrafo que trabaja en un museo; además de estar obsesionado por encontrar la ciudad perdida de la Atlántida, siguiendo los pasos de su difunto abuelo. Tras ser despedido de dicho museo, consigue una oportunidad única cuando el viejo amigo de su abuelo, el Sr. Whitmore, quien además de ser millonario, deseaba financiar la expedición a encontrar ese imperio perdido.
Milo acepta con mucho gusto, embarcándose a las profundidades del mar con una tripulación liderada por el comandante Rourke. Tras intensos desafíos en su camino a encontrar la Atlántida, por fin llegan a su destino, pero, para su sorpresa, el lugar estaba habitado (creyendo que no encontraría ciudadanos), conociendo a Kida, la princesa del Imperio, quien revela que han olvidado su historia y tecnología, por lo que Milo la ayudará a redescubrir su pasado gracias a los conocimientos que tiene del mismo; la película nos llevara a esta aventura por conocer el Imperio perdido y la lucha por proteger el corazón de Atlantis.
Opinión personal
Esta película es una de mis favoritas de Disney, su estética e historia siempre me cautivan y me entristece que no haya recibido los elogios merecidos, su fracaso en taquilla y que tenía un estilo más de comic y de acción y aventura que, al parecer como que no resonó con el público en su momento, inclusive ni siquiera he visto ese remake en live action, que ahorita pareciera que dominara en el mundo cinematográfico del estudio, aunque creo que es mejor, para que no arruinen la historia, al menos que la hicieran como el filme de “como entregar a tu dragón”, el cual los personajes fueron más profundizados.
Lo que me gusta de este filme, es que, además de su estética que me gusta, porque era otro estilo diferente a lo que el estudio nos venia trayendo, el escenario y los personajes que nos presentaban, el de perseguir aquello por lo que ha dedicado tanto tiempo de tu vida, aunque no te creyeran, aun así, no pretendía rendirse y consiguió rodearse de aquellos que estaban dispuestos a confiar en los conocimientos que había adquirido, fueron los elementos atractivos que me llamaron la atención. Agregando que, todo este cuento de la Atlántida era sumamente cautivador ¿una civilización debajo del mar? Creo que para un niño resulta intrigante y deja volar tu imaginación.
Puntos positivos…
-Una estética visual única, con diseño de personajes característicos.
-Una historia bastante madura, con referentes literarios atractivos.
-Todos los personajes son memorables, aun cuando son secundarios, pues tiene su participación puntual en escena, que dejan su esencia.
-Un gran apartado musical excepcional, y es que el padre de todos los latinos americanos (Chayanne) hizo la interpretación en español, lo cual me resulta aún más memorable.
Puntos negativos…
-El ritmo de la historia, que no deja profundizar aún mejor a sus personajes, pero realmente no lo siento tan rápido para ser una película animada.
-En su momento, fue criticada por el tono que uso, ya que ni era para un publica infantil y para los adultos se sentía muy simple.
-El gran fracaso que tuvo en taquilla.

Así como el Planeta de los Tesoros y otras películas, Atlantis, en su momento no generó ganancias a su estudio, pero ha tenido mayor trascendencia que muchas otras, ha sido parte de la cultura cinematográfica, con una historia única y elementos visuales que han hecho de ella, un referente a explorar con otros estilos visuales que dan mayor variedad y no enfocarse a un solo diseño de personaje e incluso, en el ambiente y objetos que son parte de la narrativa que se está gestando.
