This week I was organizing some old DVDs and I remembered an animated movie I really liked—well, I still like it. Even though I couldn't find it, I thought it was worth mentioning because it's one of those animated films and stories that didn't get the attention it deserved. So, if you haven't seen this movie, here are my thoughts on it so you can watch it.

This adventure-comedy film was released in 2003, directed by Tim Johnson and Patrick Gilmore. The screenplay was written by John Logan and is based on Sinbad the Sailor from One Thousand and One Nights, a traditional Middle Eastern tale about a sailor from Baghdad living during the Abbasid Caliphate, whose voyages across the Indian Ocean are recounted.

Our protagonist was determined to escape; however, he hadn't counted on Marina, the fiancée of the Prince of Syracuse, sneaking onto his ship to help him complete his mission. Thus, they will both face various dangers, creatures, and, above all, the feelings of their hearts. Will they be able to recover the book? Will the prince end up condemned to death?
Personal opinion
The film has great visual appeal, even though it doesn't feature characters with softer features. This way of deviating from common standards is what makes it interesting—well, that's my point of view, because each of its characters strikes me as unique and distinct. I know the film attempts to fuse handcrafted cel-animation (2D) with massive CGI (3D), however, the integration between the two isn't quite seamless. Eris's monsters sometimes "float" above the 2D characters, creating a visual disconnect, but these are details that can easily go unnoticed because I consider the plot quite dynamic.
Something else you might like is that Sinbad isn't your typical hero; he's more of a cynical anti-hero, driven by selfishness and resentment towards the nobility. His transformation arc isn't about "learning to be good," but about the responsibility of truth. It's like saying he's a thief, but with manners and ethics—does that make sense? As for the protagonist, I love her. She's also not one of those damsel-in-distress types, nor is she a forced warrior. She's a pragmatic woman who dreams of the sea, and her technical expertise on board the ship is what truly saves the mission, not just her moral support. And so on; her most noteworthy characters each have something to highlight and convey.
In this sense, the core of the film is a philosophical debate between Eris and Sinbad. This goddess doesn't want the book for power; she wants it to demonstrate that the concept of human "honor" is a facade that crumbles before the instinct for survival. What's incredible is that the climax isn't resolved with a sword, but with an ethical decision. It's an unusually mature message for a children's film: integrity is what defines us in the face of chaos. I think it failed mainly because the tone was geared more towards teenagers than children, and also because at that time I believe Finding Nemo was being released, which changed the paradigm of what audiences wanted to see (the full rise of Pixar's 3D).

-It has excellent pacing and doesn't waste any time. From the initial battle with the Kraken to the journey around the edge of the world, the action sequences are choreographed with an energy reminiscent of the great adventures of Indiana Jones, so the action is ever-present.
-The chemistry between the protagonists is quite good; it feels organic.
-The soundtrack fulfills its role very well, enhancing and complementing each scene that requires it.
Negative points…
- The clash between 2D and 3D is very evident.
-Based on the message it conveys, it must have been intended for a larger audience.
Some find a disconnect with the original material. Almost all the Arabic elements were removed to replace them with generic Greek mythology (Syracuse, Eris, the Sirens), missing the opportunity to explore the cultural richness of Sinbad's origins.
Also, the comedic moments could have been set aside, and the plot could have maintained a more epic and serious tone.
The secondary characters lacked depth, even Proteus, who had a significant role at the beginning, became a static character just waiting in a cell, making him feel more like a plot device than a character with his own agency.

Esta semana estuve acomodando unos viejos DVD y pues me acordé una película animada que me gustaba mucho, bueno, aun me gusta, aunque no la conseguí pues me pareció pertinente rememorar de la misma, porque es una de esas animaciones e historia que no recibió la debida atención, así que, sino haz visto este filme, te traigo mis opiniones de la misma para que la veas.

Esta película de aventura y comedia, fue estrenada para el año 2003, bajo la dirección de Tim Johnson y Patrick Gilmore, en el guion estuvo a cargo John Logan y se encuentra basado en Simbad el marino de Las mil y una noches, este es un cuento tradicional árabe originario del Medio Oriente y el de su protagonista, un marinero de Bagdad que vive durante el Califato abasí, en el que se narran los viajes del mismo por el océano Índico.
Datos curiosos: Este filme fue la última película de animación tradicional del estudio DreamWorks Animation, junto con un presupuesto de 60 millones de dólares, logrando solo recaudar unos 80 millones de dólares. Entre sus actores de doblajes están Brad Pitt (como Simbad), Catherine Zeta-Jones, Michelle Pfeiffer, Joseph Fiennes, entre otros.
¿De qué va la trama?…
La historia sigue a Simbad, un audaz y carismático pirata, que planea robar un valioso objeto, que no es más que el Libro de la Paz, un artefacto sagrado que protege a las doce ciudades de Siracusa; sin embargo, durante el intento de robo, se reencuentra con su antiguo mejor amigo, el príncipe Proteo. Aunque se encontrara el mismo, estaba decidido a robarlo, pero logran resolver sus conflictos y llegan juntos a la ciudad de Siracusa.

Opinión personal
La película tiene un gran atractivo visual, aun cuando no es un estilo de personajes con rasgos más suaves, esa forma de salirse de los estándares comunes, es la que la vuelve interesante, bueno, ese es mi punto de vista, porque cada uno de sus personajes se me hace único y distinguible. Sé que el filme intenta fusionar el cel-animation (2D) artesanal con CGI (3D) masivo, sin embargo, no hay como una buena integración entre ambos, pues los monstruos de Eris a veces, "flotan" sobre los personajes 2D, creando una desconexión visual, pero son detalles que pueden pasar fácilmente desapercibido, porque la trama la considero bastante dinámica.
Algo que también puede que le guste es que, Simbad no es el típico héroe, más bien es un antihéroe cínico, motivado por el egoísmo y el resentimiento hacia la nobleza, su arco de transformación no es sobre "aprender a ser bueno", sino sobre la responsabilidad de la verdad, porque es como decir es ladrón, pero con modales y éticas, ¿no sé si me explico? En cuanto a la protagonista, me encanta, también se sale de esas damiselas en peligro ni tampoco es una guerrera de forma forzada, es una mujer pragmática que sueña con el mar, cuya competencia técnica a bordo del barco es lo que realmente salva la misión, no solo su apoyo moral; y así, sucesivamente, sus personajes más destacables tienen algo que resaltar y transmitir.
En este sentido, el núcleo de la película es un debate filosófico entre Eris y Simbad, pues esta diosa, no quiere el libro por poder, lo quiere para demostrar que el concepto de "honor" humano es una fachada que se desmorona ante el instinto de supervivencia; lo increíble es el clímax no se resuelve con una espada, sino con una decisión ética, es un mensaje inusualmente maduro para una película infantil: la integridad es lo que nos define frente al caos. Creo que más que nada fallo porque el tono era más para adolescente que a pequeños, aunado que en ese momento creo que se estaba estrenando Nemo, que cambió el paradigma de lo que el público quería ver (el auge total del 3D de Pixar).
Puntos positivos…
-Mensaje bastante profundos y filosóficos.
-Sus diseños de personajes son bastantes destacables y únicos, como el de la diosa Eris, es fluido y etéreo, sumado a su personalidad manipuladora que no busca destruir el mundo sino "jugar con él", la convierte en una de las antagonistas más memorables de la animación.
-Tiene un excelente ritmo no pierde el tiempo. Desde la batalla inicial con el Kraken hasta el viaje por el borde del mundo, las secuencias de acción están coreografiadas con una energía que recuerda a las grandes aventuras de Indiana Jones, por lo que la acción estará bastante presente.
-La química entre los protagonistas es bastante buena, se siente orgánica.
-La banda sonora cumple muy bien el rol de elevar y estar acorde a cada escena que la requiera.
Puntos negativos…
- El choque entre el 2D y el 3D es muy evidente.
-Por el mensaje que maneja, debió ser para un publico más grande.
-Algunos encuentran una desconexión con el material original. Se eliminaron casi todos los elementos árabes para convertirlos en una mitología griega genérica (Siracusa, Eris, las Sirenas), perdiendo la oportunidad de explorar la riqueza cultural del origen de Simbad.
-También que los momentos de comedia pudieron haberse dejado a un lado, y seguir con un tono más épico y serio que la trama ya venia trayendo.
-Los personajes secundarios si que le falto profundidad, incluso Proteo que tenia un gran peso al principio, pues paso a ser un personaje estático que solo espera en una celda, lo que lo hace sentir más como una herramienta de guion que como un personaje con agencia propia.

Simbad es una de las tantas franquicias **infravalorada** que sufrió por nacer en el momento equivocado.
