My Review of Miss Congeniality/Mi Opinión de Miss Simpatía [ENG/ESP]

This is the story of Gracie Hart (Sandra Bullock), an FBI agent who, after making a mistake on one of her cases, was assigned other cases that were technically a demotion from her position. Regaining her position was therefore important to her—until she encounters a terrorism case where solving it might be her best chance to earn back the respect of her colleagues. However, the assignment she was given—even though she is a woman—is neither easy nor what she wanted. She has to infiltrate the Miss USA pageant as just another contestant, since there is information that a terrorist attack will take place there, and the only way to get further with that information is by infiltrating the event.

That’s where Gracie comes in—as I said before, even though she’s a woman, she thinks it’s impossible to succeed. That’s why a group of experts helps her with her transformation, since her physique wasn’t suitable enough for her to be allowed to participate normally. When she finally makes it, she thinks it’s just another beauty pageant where all the contestants care about is showing off their beauty—they’re shallow-minded people who don’t think about anything else, all superficial—in short, a pageant that’s good for nothing else. But Gracie will come to realize that for the contestants, it’s about more than just showing off their bodies; it’s about gaining popularity and the prizes that come with it to help them fulfill their dreams. Each one has her own life, her own goals, and the things she wants to achieve. That pageant isn’t just about showing off their physiques and skills—it’s a means to achieve other goals.

So for Gracie, this will be a way to learn to better understand her surroundings, appreciate the support of others, and experience the things that other women go through—as well as to not judge solely by outward appearances, but to truly understand each person by getting to know them as they really are. It’s also about realizing that no matter what job you have, it’s not such a bad thing to take a little time to look your best—that shows the care you have for yourself, and you show that by taking care of everything from your hair to your nails and the way you dress. Plus, someone who takes care of their appearance makes a good impression, and for Gracie, that used to seem like the least important thing—even if she got her clothes dirty while working, thinking it was normal and not worth worrying about. She’ll come to understand that it matters too. It’s a story that also offers some great comedy.
