Sometimes, life becomes so bleak and in our search for something to spark joy, we stumble upon some of the most valuable treasures hidden in movies we have never seen. This was my experience watching this film, and there is no better way to tell the story than by leaving a review here.

Movie Details

Title: Broken Hallelujah

Genre: Drama, Christian Romance

Release Date: April 18, 2025

Main Cast: Bimbo Ademoye, Daniel Etim Effiong, Bimbo Akintola, Eso Dike, Barbara Soky, Great Val Edochie, Munachi Ike, Saratu Bello.

Synopsis

Broken Hallelujah is a story of love built on honest dreams, faith, purpose, and perseverance, with a central focus on the challenges of infertility. It centers on two main characters, Diya, a young Christian woman navigating adulthood alone after the loss of her only surviving relative, and Okwudili, a bold and industrious tailor with big dreams and a deep love for Christ.

This story circles back to their childhood, where they grew up as friends, with Diya quietly nursing a crush on Okwudili. Years later, they reunite in their village with hopes of rekindling their friendship and making the most out of life. The movie follows the gradual process of strengthening a relationship, highlighting the emotional and physical challenges both parties face and how they navigate the outcomes of life-altering decisions and happenings beyond their control.

My Verdict

Broken Hallelujah is one of the most thoughtful and powerful faith-based movies I have seen in a long time. From the first few scenes, it was already clear that the story was written with warmth, empathy, and a strong intention to speak to those struggling with their faith, especially people who have grudges with the unpredictable nature of life going against them.

Diya remains one of the most impressive characters I have encountered in recent times. Her passion, expressed through a wonderful dialogue, brought life to the entire story. The voice-over narration was beautifully done and it helped add depth to the storytelling.

Okwudili, on the other hand, complemented her performance perfectly. His positive energy, charisma, and devotion to Christ made his character both inspiring and easy to love. He embodied the image of a supportive partner, reflecting what a faith-centered spouse should look like in both words and actions.

Now, it is honestly difficult to point out any poor performance in this movie. From Diya’s guardian angel and grandmother to Okwudili’s mother and business partner, every supporting character delivered on their role.

That said, the film had a slight miss in portraying the realities of public displays of affection among Christians. In trying to be sexually expressive, it overdramatized how devoted Nigerian Christians approach sex. At the same time, I appreciate how the movie emphasized that Christians can enjoy healthy form of intimacy just like anyone else. I just believe that a little more balance would have strengthened this part.

I also found Okwudili’s rise to success somewhat sudden, considering the difficult circumstances that led him to Lagos in search of greener pastures. Additionally, the runtime felt a bit long for a non-serial film, which means that some scenes could have been trimmed out.

Despite these little flaws, the movie delivered strongly on every element I can think of. The thoughtful use of bible verses, the carefully planned settings, and the overall storyline were beautifully executed. I genuinely loved how this movie corrected the old belief that a woman’s worth is tied to having children of her own. I also enjoyed watching the idea of having a teen crush being televised as normal rather than demonized.

I would rate Broken Hallelujah an 8.5 out of 10 and highly recommend it to anyone seeking an emotionally grounded story with raw, moving performance to bring hope to their day.
