“I walked in darkness for a very long time until you guided me to light. And I wouldn’t change any of it.”

These were the last few words Root uttered before she took her final breath in season 5 of Person of Interest, and they remain one of the most transformative quotes I’ve ever heard from any movie character.

She said them to Harold Finch, her incredibly brilliant boss who built an AI machine capable of predicting and preventing premeditated acts of violence. It was through the AI thatRoot found purpose and lived fully for it until her very last day.

Want To Know About Root?

Root was an astonishingly intelligent female hacker, hired by secret agencies for deadly missions. She carried a deep grudge against life, avoided human connection, and viewed people as “bad code." in a system. Thanks to her traumatic past and dark childhood which were responsible for how how she felt towards living.

Interestingly, she was also beautiful and had a sweet sense of humor. All these traits made her the perfect candidate for dangerous work, yet she ultimately chose to use her skills for the greater good of humanity.

Why Root’s Death Hurt So Much
Imagine encountering a new character who is witty, has all the charm, and undeniably dangerous. That alone made an impression. Now imagine the story gradually unfolds, revealing her humanity, and you begin to care deeply for her. That was my relationship with Root onscreen.

She was that layered and complex character, you always had to look beneath the surface to understand her. I had a love-hate relationship with her character until she fully grew on me. Her journey to accepting her human side, finding purpose, and learning to love her friends deeply made her death so devastating. It hurts even more to realize that she was audacious, and fiercely loyal. Her death saved her friends and her boss, which she would she have loved, but it still hurt because she was so instrumental to the entire story. I wished she didn’t have to die.

I cried a lot over Root’s death. I grieved as though she were a real person. But like she would say, “the real world is essentially a simulation.” A single action, and we’re all gone. Maybe that’s why we need to cherish the time we have left in the world with the people who matter most, chasing our wildest dreams and just living...

Nice character review of Root. I never really thought of her character in this way. Person of Interest was a good series.
