I vividly remember the story or movie "Alice in Wonderland," where Alice is forced to comply with a number of rules and situations that cause a distortion of reality and mental panic. The rabbit with that clock and his agonizing predicament because Alice was running out of time and had to do absurd things. I also remember that as a child, the first time I saw it, I thought it was crazy, and I was desperate for the chaos and absurdity that Alice had to go through.
I think—and this is entirely my own opinion—that "Vicious" has many parallels with "Alice in Wonderland," where Alice and Polly, two insecure yet kind people, are forced to comply with things and take action in absurd and traumatizing situations, in an oppressive mental labyrinth. In fact, in Alice, it was a rabbit with a clock, and in "Vicious," it's an hourglass. For me, this film gave me the same tension, but it also gave me the opportunity to read or understand it from my current maturity, and through this great Director like Bryan Bertino.
Recuerdo perfectamente el cuento o la película de "Alicia en el país de las Maravillas" donde Alicia se ve forzada a cumplir con una cantidad de reglas y situaciones que le provocaban una distorsión de la realidad y pánico mental. El conejo con ese reloj y su angustiante apuro porque a Alicia se le acababa el tiempo y que debía hacer cosas absurdas. Recuerdo además que de niña, la primera vez que la vi me parecía una locura, y si me desesperaba lo caótico y absurdo que debía atravesar Alicia.
Creo, y esta apreciación es absolutamente personal; que "Vicious" tiene muchos paralelismos con "Alicia en el país de las Maravilla", donde Alicia y Polly, dos personas inseguras y amables, son obligadas a cumplir con cosas y tomar acción en situaciones absurdas y traumatizantes, en un laberinto mental opresivo. Incluso, en Alicia era un conejo con un reloj, y en "Vicious" está un reloj de arena. Para mí, esta película me dio la misma tensión, pero también me dio la oportunidad de leerla o entenderla desde mi actual madurez, y a través de este gran Director como es Bryan Bertino.
A girl named Polly (Dakota Fanning) is at home, somewhat neglected, burdened with memories, worried about a job interview, unsure of what to wear, and feeling a little insecure. Then, a mysterious old woman arrives at her house, looking a little lost. Polly lets her in. The old woman tells her she's going to die that night and gives her a strange gift: a black box containing an hourglass and a note instructing her to perform a macabre ritual.
Polly must place three objects inside: something she needs, something she hates, and something she loves. Failure to do so will have deadly consequences. Polly must give the box the three things it demands, but she must be absolutely honest, as the box is undeceived. So, to answer those three things truthfully, she must explore deeply within herself. This is the hardest part: analyzing herself, her fears, those feelings she has tried to hide and even forget, which have made her the insecure and vulnerable person she is today.

The Box Doesn't Choose at Random... There's a Pattern
I think the more I think about this film, the more I understand it. Writing this post and analyzing the events of the film and what its director wanted to convey, I understand a pattern that unites Polly, the old woman, and young Tara (the final victim). All three lived a kind of voluntary social isolation, loneliness, and possibly depression. The old woman at one point tells Polly that she doesn't know why they were chosen, but I think the cursed box doesn't really choose at random; it selects a specific type of people who are in a state of psychological fragility. I think the entire film is a great metaphor.
For the old woman, I feel that her isolation comes from that final stage of life, where we are alone, desperate, and lacking support.
Polly, she seemed insecure, unwilling to fight and move forward, talking to her mom on the phone when she was insecure. She loves her niece but doesn't have a good relationship with her sister and is very distant from their lives. In other words, she isolates herself from the few family members she has left, suffers from trauma, and even lost her faith and hope when her father died.
Tara, when Polly first spoke to her, Tara told her that her parents went on a trip, leaving her alone in the house. I sensed that she felt excluded or not included in their fun plans. I think Tara also had an emptiness or a feeling of abandonment or detachment that made her feel "cut off from others."

Esta película creo que mientras más la pienso, más la entiendo. Haciendo este post y analizando los acontecimientos de la película y lo que nos quiso decir su director, entiendo un patrón que une a Polly, la anciana y la joven Tara (la víctima final). Las tres vivían como un Aislamiento social voluntario de alguna forma, la soledad y posiblemente la depresión. La anciana en un momento se dice a Polly que no sabe por qué las eligen, pero creo que la caja maldita realmente no elige al azar, selecciona a un tipo específico de personas que se encuentran en un estado de fragilidad psicológica, creo que toda la película es una gran METÁFORA.
La anciana, siento que su aislamiento viene de esa etapa final de la vida, donde estamos solos, desesperados y falta de apoyo.
Polly, ella se nos mostró insegura, sin querer luchar y salir adelante, hablando con su mamá por teléfono cuando está insegura, ama a su sobrina pero no tiene buena relación con su hermana y está muy distante de sus vidas. Es decir, se aísla de los pocos familiares que le quedan, tiene traumas e incluso perdió la fe y la esperanza cuando murió su papá.

As I mentioned earlier, I think "Vicious" takes the structure of a journey into an illogical world with deadly rules from "Alice in Wonderland" and uses it to explore the psychological terror we all have at some point when confronting our fears, those that make us withdraw from our surroundings, our loved ones, and even give up fighting.
In my opinion, the message of both "Alice in Wonderland" and "Vicious" is that we can "wake up" when we "refuse" to play the game of despair, stop worrying about time (the rabbit with his clock or the hourglass), and make the most of our lives, letting go of isolation, facing our fears, and reaching out to the people in our lives every day.
Como les comenté anteriormente, creo que "Vicious" toma la estructura de viaje a un mundo ilógico con reglas mortales de "Alicia en el país de las Maravillas" y la utiliza para explorar el terror psicológico que tenemos todos en algún punto a la auto confrontación de nuestros miedos, esos que nos hacen apartarnos de nuestro entorno, de nuestros seres queridos y hasta dejar de luchar.
En mi opinión, el mensaje tanto del cuento "Alicia en el país de las Maravillas" como de "Vicious", es que podemos "despertar" cuando nos "Negamos" a jugar el juego de la desesperación, dejar de preocuparnos por el tiempo (el conejo con su reloj o el reloj de arena) y aprovechar mejor nuestras vidas, dejando a un lado el aislamiento, enfrentando nuestros miedos y acercándonos a las personas que tenemos en nuestras vidas día a día.
This film is definitely not for everyone who loves the horror genre. People who come to this film looking for its signature elements like over-the-top special effects, an abundance of screams, and over-the-top plot twists will surely be disappointed, because director Bryan Bertino approached psychological horror with a completely different perspective, focusing on intimate fear and madness.
But if you love horror that makes you think, the kind that stays with you after the credits roll and even for days afterward, and stories that use horror to address deeply human themes, you have to see this one. It's a terrifying METAPHOR about surrender, isolation, and the struggle to not lose yourself to your inner demons.
Esta película definitivamente no es todos los amantes del género de Terror, personas que llegan a esta película en busca de los elementos característicos como la saturación de efectos especiales, abundancia de gritos y giros argumentales exagerados, ese tipo de espectador seguramente se sentirá decepcionado, porque el director Bryan Bertino trabajó el Terror Psicológico con una perspectiva completamente diferente, centrada en el miedo íntimo y la locura.
Pero si amas el terror que te hace pensar, el que se queda contigo después de que los créditos terminan e incluso días después, y las historias que utilizan el horror para hablar de temas profundamente humanos, tienes que verla.
