my favorite documentary.jpg

I mostly like scientific documentaries.

I'm not really into animals observation stuff or historical ones. But when it's about the human body, proofs that capitalism is shit or the power of ecosystems, that's the best for me, even more when a documentary is mixing each of those subjects so for this cineTv contest, I'll choose a movie which has also 2 of these 3 themes !

If you are like me and like them too, and are French or German (yes that start to make too much common point) you probably know the TV channel ARTE, which shares a lot of its documentaries on YouTube. That's for me a really good amount of scientific documentaries and my favorites are the ones about the human body with the food side effects during different period of our lives.

But as I said, those are TV documentaries. That's great but nothing compared to a feature film cinema documentary. And in that group there is one Australian team I really love.

That Sugar Film

Damon Gameau is at first just trying to see how it goes if he starts eating the average amount of sugar an average Australian eats everyday, only with meals advertised as being healthy.

image.png

Yep, advertized as being healthy if "accompanied" with a healthy alimentation. Yes but even here, no, even one can of Mountain Dew per day is too much, it should be something really occasional.

This is the food and scientific side. I think you understood that.

It starts, takes some time to show what changes in his life and it totally changes. Because something important, before the movie, he was almost eating no sugar. That's why I found the movie pretty relatable for me, I don't ingest that much sugar in my life. As for him, I mostly eat fresh vegetables cooked at home, no premade meals, almost no microwave so no added sugar until I make it myself and I don't make it.

After some time in the movie something more happens. He's saying that sugar had a really really important role in the modern society, I don't really want to explain too much but to be quick, my opinion about that today is "The omnipresence of sugar everywhere in the food in the world reflect the fact that capitalism is just about selling the more possible and making the most profit possible without giving a shit about killing millions of people every year".

I don't really know about the healthcare in Australia but I know about it in France. We have one if not the best healthcare system in the world (which is downgrading down because of capitalism woops). That means the health costs are paid thanks to the taxes, and here in France the diseases caused by junk food costs around 50 Billion € per year...
Companies (including some like McDonald's, not even paying their taxes in France) are making a lot of money and don't care about people health that costs a lot to public funds.

I digress.

What I would like to say is that even if the documentary actually shows a real political position again unbridled capitalism, when you look a little deeper, you can see a lot more than that.

It is actually pretty easy to watch !

If you are not used to documentaries, this is probably one of the best to start with. It is actually extremely entertaining, the colors, the rhythm, everything is made to be attracting for the more people as possible. They unlocked a real budget to make it pleasant to see, one of the best place to listen some statistics for 5 minutes when the guy is actually riding a red cell !!!

NB: That's a fat cell

The cinéphile in me is having his best moment possible when watching this movie. It has everything to offer, some good time, some knowledge, and some reflection about the world and about yourself.
And to be honest this is probably the documentary which gave me the taste for documentaries. I don't think I watched so much of them by myself before this one. But now I'm here, I have some to share ! This will be my #ClimateApocalyspeButYouCanChangeTheThings favorite documentaries list :

  • Cowspiracy showing you how the meat consumption is destroying the environment and can be really really unethic in some places. And how this is all hidden my meat companies which almost work like a mafia. Probably also the movie which helped me passing from vegetarian to vegan.

  • Seaspiracy, almost the same thing but with fishes, showing that this is in fact way worst than meat consumption and here real mafias and companies are working together. Yep, eating fish may seem Slavery, oopsy. 🙄 I already made a post about it few months ago if you want more information before wathcing it, because you will isn't it ? 😉

  • David Attenborough : A Life On Our Planet showing you all the impact the humans had on the planet, what did it change, how many animals disappeared, how much the temperature increased, the quandity of plastic in the ocean, the Illnesses etc.

  • Kiss the ground narrated by Woody Harelson tells how farmers are able to totally change the way they work to be way more natural, stop chemical fertilizers and try a large scale permaculture to heal their land. They are trying to convince other farmers and that should be so much used because permaculture farms is probably one of the best way to reduce CO2 emissions and Capt come of it into the soil and bring a lot of life. Making them earn more money by the way. Really interesting.

And to sum up :

  • 2040 is so much frustrating especially for me in France when we just elected as a president someone who doesn't care at all about environment... This movies shows how could be the world in 2040 if the whole world started suddenly to care about environment and I vestedd massively to save it and help without sacrificing too much our life style and it can be totally improved if we do it well, and for everybody not only the riches ! And this is made by the same team as That sugar film so it's absolutely beautiful !

Those 5 movies are probably the documentaries that created me as I am now. Carrying about people health and our environment. I may also promote The game changer about vegan lifestyle but in sports this time.

This is just fucking true and it's the ugly side of capitalism for sure. And the worst part is, it's completely acceptable and there's not much we can do about it on a wide scale. We can only take care of ourselves.

If everyone was at least paying a little attention about that, that would be already way better for everyone !

I do love watching scientific documentaries too. But if its knowledgeable then I love to watch historical based documentaries too.
