The Match "My Review"
Growing up, our teachers would always tell us one thing: "I want you all to be better than me in the future," but then what happens when we become better than them? Would they hate themselves?
Saw this movie when I was wandering about on what to keep myself busy with. I stumbled on it, at first I never thought it was "a true life event" because it was mentioned at the beginning, unlike other movies that would notify you at the beginning. But was I happy about the fact that, in the end, it was based on a true-life event? Well, yes, because I loved movies based on true-life events. It shows how real and true the movie is, and that alone captures me.
This is the first Korean movie I'm seeing that is based on a true-life event, "a little surprised though".
The Plot
The movie is set in the 80s and 90s. It tells the story of two Go players. GO is like an abstract board game for two players, like chess. The aim of the players is to fence off more territory against their opponent. This particular game was invented in China.
The movie tells the story of a champion Go player who has been unbeatable for several years, "Cho hun hyun," who later discovers a young, gifted, and untrained Go player, "Lee chang ho," in an amateur contest. Cho hun hyun developed an interest in the young child and decided to train him to become better at Go.
So he takes this student under his wings to turn him into a professional Go player, but then conflicts started happening when this student later turns against his master's teachings and starts developing his own techniques on how to play the game. In his words, "everyone must not do things the same, doing things differently is what makes life a lot easier, even in the game world".
My Review
"The Match" is an incredible masterpiece that tells the story of two champions and how their relationship started, and how it later became a conflicting situation. Like I mentioned above at the beginning of this post. Do teachers really get happy when their students perform better than they do? Or imagine being in a contest with your teacher and you won, how would your teacher feel? That is one thing I kept asking myself when I finished watching this movie.
I know teachers would always say, "I feel proud when my students perform better than I." However, if the performance becomes a contest between the teacher and the student, would the teacher be pleased with the whole event if the student wins the contest? In this movie, I got to realize that everyone likes to maintain their territory and protect whatever champion position they hold. I mean, who would want to lose a champion title to someone that he trains in the game? "That would be heartbreaking, right?" But then in life, you can't predict certain situations.
Now the teacher finds pride in his student, but at the same time, he is scared of being replaced by his student, "What a twist." The student, on the other hand, is very obedient and well-disciplined, transforming into a confident and self-assured challenger.
I was really moved by the inspirational story of this movie; I'm amazed that it's a true-life event, and as far as I understand, it is as true as possible because they portrayed the events so perfectly. This movie portrays real honesty that makes it outstanding and incredible to watch. Every scene unfolding holds a meaningful impact.
I'm gonna rate this movie an 8/10, the cast did an incredible job with the roles given. Though the movie gives an insight into the 80s and 90s but the cinematography was on point.
