The Fine Line Between Hilarity and Cringe in "Divorce Bait"

“It’s so bad... but I can’t look away.”

That’s what I felt while I watched the first scene of this movie. I definitely fell into the all dreaded trap that I often try, by all means, to avoid. The trap of picking the wrong movie!

I was skimming through Telegram movie links, as one does 😅, trying to find the perfect movie. My mission was to find something magnificent and entertaining—something I would have a blast reviewing.

Well, after minutes of endless scrolling and almost admitting defeat, I finally came across the trailer for this movie.

I clicked on it, and all I can say, having watched the actual movie, is that the ten minute snippet did a stupendous job of suppressing the mediocrity, which shined rather glaringly throughout the entirety of the movie.

Despite this, the movie found a way to grow on me. Let’s do a quick run through it and get to what you came here for!

ABOUT THE MOVIE

The one hour, thirty-three minute film depicts the lives of the married couple, Alexis and Marco Laguna. Alexis being a model and Marco, well, I know he works a corporate job, which is kind of a big deal, but his position wasn’t clearly stated.

On a date night out, the couple finds out about another couple in their friend group splitting up. Alexis feels strongly for the couple and expresses her sadness to her husband. Not long after, she spots the about-to-be divorced husband on a date with a female friend of the ex-couple, two tables in front.

She feels immense betrayal on behalf of the ex-wife. This makes her wonder which of her friends would make a move on her husband if they found out they were getting a divorce.

She then decides to perform an experiment by making a fake post on Facebook announcing a divorce from her husband, with the sole aim of testing her friends’ loyalties. Her husband warns her against it, but she goes ahead and does it.

Of course, the post offsets a spiral of activities and events, some nasty and others outright hilarious. But the events that unfold proceed to test the integrity of their marriage.

Will they end up truly divorcing? Or will they tackle the trials and come out on the other side?

STORYLINE

I mean, do I need to say it? The storyline was undeniably weak and unrealistic. In today’s society, ain’t nobody got the time to perform silly experiments on their marriage. First of all, why would anyone even think of that?

I feel like the progression of the story didn’t flow appropriately into one another. At some point, I just gave up control and cast all my expectations into the wind. The scenes were coming out of nowhere. Some scenes are cut way too soon without an established reason for showing them.

But I will say, they were ridiculously insane scenes that made me giggle at some points.

ACTING

Like I mentioned earlier, when I first tuned into the movie, I knew I had picked the wrong one. The energy levels needed to bring the lines to life were found to be enormously lacking in the actors. It almost felt like they were making the script up as they went.

The acting was somewhere in between amateur and expert. There were scenes where the reaction to some events was so unrealistic that it was hard to enjoy.

For example, there was a scene where the husband was invited to an adult pool party. He went, but didn’t know that it was a sex dungeon and things were going to go down.

He acted rather clueless. Granted, he had no idea what the place was at first, but a grown man should know that the moment you see sex toys in a room, you begin to get a general idea. He, on the other hand, acted like he had never seen one of them before.

And even when the lady dressed in lingerie came by, he looked at her with a blank, confused expression, as though he didn’t understand what she was there for.

FINAL THOUGHTS

The movie started off basic, and the scenes weren’t at all the best ones out there. Despite all that, the movie did grow on me the more I watched.

Like I said, there were a lot of hilarious scenes. And there were some that just made me roll my eyes at the amount of cringeworthiness they exuded. But all in all, I will say that I kind of enjoyed it.

It’s one of those movies that you might not like at first, but if you keep watching, you won’t know when you get to the end.

It’s definitely hard to rate this one, but I’ll give it a ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐5.5/10
