The Ritual Killer | Movie Review🍟 {ENG-ESP}

Imagine African witchcraft with the whole shebang; kidnapping people, cutting them up and extracting their organs which will be made into potions. Then people that seek fame and success would be required to drink the potion to achieve it. Now this concept is very common in African- more specifically, Nigerian- movies. But this movie manages to bring that concept into America! Crazy right?

My personal ritual- no pun intended- before I pick a movie to watch is to check if I recognize any of the actors. As an actor, people analyze or get a general idea of your skills from previous works and movies, whether the role was big or small. So I look out for familiar faces and assess the quality of their skills from previous movies.

I did the same for this movie and was able to recognize Morgan Freeman. An amazing actor who has a collection of movies and awards under his belt. I felt a hesitation towards the movie before picking it, but I chose to ignore it and have some faith; a decision I would later come to regret.

About The Movie

The movie portrays a depressed detective, played by Cole Hauser, a troubled man finding it difficult to move on from the effects of a fatal mistake he made in the past. The mistake cost him his family and so he harbors this unending feeling of guilt. He turns to alcohol for solace and distraction.

Our detective is placed in charge of a case in which there is a serial killer on the loose. Dead bodies of young individuals keep showing up in different parts of town, but something is different about these deaths. In all the crime scenes, there seems to be scribbles of strange words made with the blood of the victims on the walls. And they keep finding body parts and weird items on the floor.

After much digging, the detective and his team figure that the strange language on the wall is African and seek the expert knowledge and help of Morgan, who plays a college professor that specializes in African Culture and History.

Together they join forces to bring down the serial killer whom they later find out is a “Sangoma”, a medicine man or a witch doctor. Turns out he has a ton of rich clients that hire him to kidnap children with bright futures and kill them for a ritual that will make the clients richer and more successful.

Storyline

The script of this movie is great. I admire the way African witchcraft managed to travel across borders and continents, and found its way into Hollywood. Even the sound tracks made the trip 😅. But I cannot turn a blind eye to the numerous plot holes that span the entirety of the movies.

There were moments where the intention was to create suspense, and they had no problem doing so. But you know that moment when you are made to wait in suspense, and you expect the next thing that happens to blow your mind… but it doesn’t so you get vexed because what was the essence? Yeah a lot of that happened in this movie. And with every time it happened, I felt a wave of disappointment.

The one part that drove me absolutely insane was towards the ending. The police men had all figured out where the next ritual was going down, the next line of action was to stop it before the victim died. In that kind of scenario, normally police men would swarm the area in troops and ensure that the ritual was averted; not these ones though.

For some reason, just the one detective and the professor went to the scene of the ritual, alone! They seemed to think that these two men could defeat the killer they had all been looking for. The fight scene that occurred after they got there was nothing to write home about either.

Acting

Generally the acting was decent. The character that stood out to me was that of Morgan Freeman, and my opinion is not based on any form of bias. The man just know his onions.

Given that the detective was the star of the show, he didn't perform as well as he should have. There were other roles that called for energy from the players, yet they fell short. These factors made it all the more demoralizing to watch.

Final Thoughts

There were a lot of plot holes and inconsistencies in the story. Some scenes aroused an air of confusion as to how we got there in the first place, and this further brought down my morale to finish it.

Some scenes felt rushed, as in there wasn’t enough story development around a scene to arrive at a conclusion but still they went with it, I don’t know if that makes sense.

For example; they wanted to abduct a teenager from school. The first scene depicted where they monitored her at school, and then the next scene showed where the client had her at his house eating lunch with him. How did he persuade get her to follow him willingly to his home and feel comfortable enough to eat with him? I guess the viewers have to figure that part out themselves.

Taking into account the fact that both human and material resources were allocated to the realization of this movie, I would like to commend the parts of the movie that were actually amazing. The actors all tried their best in the way they knew how. So I appreciate all that worked in putting this movie together.

Overall I would rate the movie a 5/10.

ESPANOL

I saw the introduction of your post and I was excited. Just like you, it's a good thing that the "African witchcraftcy" found it's way to Hollywood. Let's hope it's just a movie and not a reality 😅

Morgan Freeman is a great actor for real and his movies are amazing. If I am ever to watch this movie, it would be because of him.

The only thing that keeps me till the end of a film that has too many inconsistencies and let-downs is simply the fact that I would like to talk about how terrible it is.

The plot doesn't sound convincing enough for me, so it is not going to my list.

That's for sharing.

Haha, you've already wasted your time, might as well make some money out of it!

Given that the detective was the star of the show, he didn't perform as well as he should have.

Even in football, some players are just star players and whether or not they’re the captain doesn’t dampen their performance. They’ll outshine the captain every time. With Morgan Freeman in there, it’ll take extraordinary performance for the detective to own his role and be the star.

This is great writing! I don’t do well with reading reviews to the end, but I finished this one.

I think I’ll give the movie a watch. See what American’s grasp of our beliefs and myths.
