Hey, what's up humans of Movies & TV Shows!

Today I finally decided to join this community by writing my newly discovered passion for Korean series. So this is my first review, heh.

I always considered myself a very picky person when it comes to choose a genre of series to watch – Actually I wasn't a big fan of comedy and romance as the main theme at all – but I feel it changed since I started watching Korean dramas. They have the amazing ability to make a sulky person like me cry over a dramatic couple's parting scene or even when it's just a cute random moment – with a super emotional OST playing in the background, the icing on the cake.

It's been a long time I was seduced by Korean music – 2nd generation of k-pop precisely, good times – so it was just a matter of time until I dove into the K-drama universe.
While navigating some random centralized social media, an ad grabbed my attention right away – it was about the K-drama "W: Two Worlds" (in hangul: 더블유). As the title and the picture suggest, it's a romance between two people from parallel worlds.

At first it was the two worlds topic that sparked my interest in watching the drama. However, it's way more than this – besides romance and fantasy, there are a lot of action scenes, comic reliefs, thriller and, of course, drama.

Hoy finalmente decidí unirme a esta comunidad escribiendo mi pasión recién descubierta por las series coreanas. Así que esta es mi primera reseña, jeje.

Siempre me consideré una persona un poco exigente cuando se trata de elegir un género de series para ver – en realidad yo no era muy fan de la comedia y el romance como tema principal – pero siento que eso cambió desde que comencé a ver dramas coreanos. K-dramas tienen la asombrosa habilidad de hacer a una persona malhumorada como yo llorar por una escena dramática de despedida de una pareja, o entonces cuando es solo un adorable momento aleatorio – con una banda sonora súper emocional de fondo, la cereza del pastel.

Ha pasado mucho tiempo que me sedujo la música coreana – 2da generación de k-pop precisamente, buenos tiempos – así que era solo cuestión de tiempo hasta que me sumergiera en el universo de los K-dramas.
Mientras navegaba por una red social centralizada cualquiera, un anuncio llamó mi atención de inmediato – se trataba del K-drama "W: Two Worlds" (en hangul: 더블유). Como sugieren el título y la imagen, es un romance entre dos personas de mundos paralelos.

Al principio, fue el tema de los dos mundos lo que despertó mi interés en ver el drama. Sin embargo, es mucho más que esto – además del romance y la fantasía, hay muchas escenas de acción, relieves cómicos, suspenso y, por supuesto, drama.

Synopsis

Kang Cheol (Lee Jong-suk) is a former Olympic athlete who is the CEO of an e-commerce company. Although he's popular and sucessful, he has a tough background. When he was 17, he became a gold medalist at a shooting championship, however his fame didn't last long. Kang Cheol's life falls into the bottomless pit when his entire family was murdered inexplicably by someone unknown. Unfairly accused, he gets arrested as the prime suspect of his family's death, but he's released after one year due to lack of evidence.

Years later, after overcoming depression and a suicide attempt, he decides to dedicate his life to look for the real culprit. He creates the "W" institute whose main objective is to figure out who commited the crime and why – not just his family's murder but a lot of other unsolved cases. Throughout the years, the only crime they weren't able to solve was Kang Cheol family's murder.

Oh Yeon-joo (Han Hyo-joo) is a cardiothoracic surgeon. One day she went to see her father, Oh Seong-moo (Kim Eui-sung), who is the creator of the Webtoon called "W", and discovered he had mysteriously disappeared while finishing drawing the last episode of W. His assistant, Park Soo-bong (Lee Shi-eon) assures Seong-moo didn't go out of his studio.

While looking for some clues of his whereabouts, Yeon-joo noticed her father had planned to kill the main character, after she sees a drawing of Kang Cheol covered in blood. Still shocked by the unexpected death of her favorite character, she sees herself in a different place than she was seconds ago. A real man covered in blood suddenly appeared next to her and her first impulse was to help him. After a sequence of events she realizes she was dragged into the Webtoon.

Kang Cheol (Lee Jong-suk) es un ex atleta olímpico y CEO de una empresa de comercio electrónico. Aunque es popular y exitoso, tiene un pasado difícil. Cuando tenía 17 años, se hizo medallista de oro en un campeonato de tiro, pero su fama no duró mucho. La vida de Kang Cheol cae en el abismo cuando toda su familia fue asesinada inexplicablemente por alguien desconocido. Acusado injustamente, fué preso como el principal sospechoso de la muerte de su familia, pero es liberado después de un año por falta de pruebas.

Años más tarde, después de superar una depresión y un intento de suicidio, él decide dedicar su vida a buscar al verdadero culpable. Él crea el instituto "W" cuyo principal objetivo es averiguar quién cometió el crimen y por qué – no solo el asesinato de su familia, sino muchos otros casos sin solución. Two worlds

The two worlds concept was explored in a very creative way – the scenes transitions between 3D and 2D are pretty good. There's a decent set of rules with logical connection between them – for example, that time passes differently in each world – that don't need to be explicit to be understood. Besides, just the parallel worlds concept itself makes this drama unique within its genre.

So, Yeon-joo discovers there's a parallel world inside the Webtoon, which Kang Cheol is the main character. She inevitably gets involved with him in order to come back to her world – and that's when the Webtoon script turned into a huge mess – it wasn't just her presence there that affected W's destiny though.

After a sudden return the same way he disappeared, Oh Seong-moo tries desperately to put a definitive end to the Webtoon – especially after he found out her daughter got involved in such a dangerous situation – but things don't work as he planned since the very beginning. From that moment Yeon-joo starts to be dragged more and more into the other world in order to save Kang Cheol from the "mysterious" murder attempts he had no clue until then. Also, Seong-moo realizes he lost control over his own work – W universe begins to acquire its own autonomy. How did that happen? And why is Yeon-joo the chosen one to save Kang Cheol?

El concepto de los dos mundos fue explorado de una manera muy creativa – las transiciones de escenas entre 3D y 2D son muy buenas. Hay un conjunto decente de reglas con una conexión lógica entre ellas – por ejemplo, que el tiempo pasa de manera diferente en cada mundo – que no necesitan ser explícitas para ser entendidas. Además, solo el propio concepto de mundos paralelos hace que este drama sea único dentro de su género.

Por lo tanto, Yeon-joo descubre que hay un mundo paralelo dentro del Webtoon, lo cual Kang Cheol es el personaje principal. Ella inevitablemente se involucra con él para volver a su mundo – y fue entonces cuando el guión de Webtoon se convirtió en un gran lío – pero, no fue solo su presencia lo que afectó el destino de W.

Después de un regreso repentino en la misma forma en que desapareció, Oh Seong-moo intenta desesperadamente poner un fin definitivo al Webtoon – especialmente después de descubrir que su hija se involucró en una situación tan peligrosa – pero las cosas no funcionan como él planeó desde el principio. Breaking the fourth wall

Appearing and disappearing out of blue, Yeon-joo arouses Kang Cheol's curiosity about her identity. His suspicions become stronger mostly due to her excess of information about the odd situations that have been surrounded him – whereas Yeon-joo's doing whatever just to get out of his world as quickly as possible. Nevertheless, her actions lead him up to notice a lot of glitches in the matrix – from illogical behaviors to recurrent events with no context – in fact, those loose ends were "accidentally" left during the creation process of W's script by Oh Seong-moo – and Kang Cheol was trying to tie them up himself.

Eventually he figures out the truth, that turns his own world conception upside down. He got devastated when he discovered his whole life was fabricated, written by the hands of someone who couldn't even write it well. Kang Cheol lost the purpose of his life as he breaks the fourth wall between the Webtoon and the readers – another aspect that brings originality to the drama. At this point Kang Cheol was gradually disconnecting from his original setup Seong-moo created for him. What will he do from now on?

Apareciendo y desapareciendo de la nada, Yeon-joo despierta la curiosidad de Kang Cheol sobre su identidad. Sus sospechas se vuelven más fuertes principalmente debido a su exceso de información sobre las situaciones extrañas que lo han rodeado – mientras que Yeon-joo está haciendo lo que sea para salir del mundo de él lo más rápido posible. Sin embargo, sus acciones lo llevan a notar una gran cantidad de fallas en la matrix – desde comportamientos ilógicos hasta eventos recurrentes sin contexto – de hecho, esos cabos sueltos fueron dejados "accidentalmente" durante el proceso de creación del guión de W por Oh Seong-moo – y Kang Cheol estaba tratando de atarlos él mismo.

Con el tiempo él descubre la verdad, que pone patas arriba su propia concepción del mundo. The creator

We know that was the thirst for justice that made Kang Cheol keep living after his family's murder. Once the truth was revealed, he goes after his creator, Seong-moo, at least to find out the killer's whereabouts. As the main character, he deserved to catch the unidentified killer. In the end, Kang Cheol got extremely disappointed in what he found out then – I won't say much to avoid spoiling – considering he had just discovered that the purpose of his existence had been just entertain the readers with his suffering and disgrace. We can say he went into a deep existencial crisis subsequently.

Meanwhile Seong-moo doesn't want to face the reality; he can't accept Kang Cheol as a human being like himself consequently he refuses to treat him like one, neglecting his own creation – besides, the show makes us question if Kang Cheol really can be considered a creation, specially after being aware of his condition. This neglect will bring more pain to Kang Cheol, who already had suffered endlessly due to an irresponsible cartoonist and thousands of sadistic readers who enjoyed his miserable saga – all Seong-moo wanted was to profit, it didn't matter how many hardships their beloved character would have to go through. At this point I was 100% involved with Kang Cheol's life drama – it's hard not to empathize with him after seeing his affliction. Will he be able to catch the killer after all that? Or will he make his own choices, going against his setup? Also, will Seong-moo change his mind?

Sabemos que fue la sed de justicia lo que hizo que Kang Cheol siguiera viviendo después del asesinato de su familia. Una vez que fue revelada la verdad, él fue tras a su creador, Seong-moo, al menos para averiguar el paradero del asesino. Como personaje principal, él merecía atrapar al asesino no identificado. Al final, Kang Cheol se quedó extremadamente decepcionado por lo que descubrió entonces – no diré mucho para evitar spoilers – considerando que acababa de descubrir que el propósito de su existencia había sido solo entretener a los lectores con su sufrimiento y desgracia. Podemos decir que posteriormente entró en una profunda crisis existencial.

Mientras tanto, Seong-moo no quiere enfrentarse a la realidad; no puede aceptar a Kang Cheol como un ser humano como él, en consecuencia, se niega a tratarlo como tal, descuidando su propia creación – además, el programa nos hace cuestionar si Kang Cheol realmente puede ser considerado una creación, especialmente después de volverse consciente de su condición. Esta negligencia traerá más dolor a Kang Cheol, que ya había sufrido interminablemente debido a un caricaturista irresponsable y miles de lectores sádicos que disfrutaban de su miserable saga – todo lo que Seong-moo quería era obtener beneficios, no importaba cuántas dificultades el querido personaje de ellos tendría que pasar. En este punto, yo estaba 100% involucrada con el drama de la vida de Kang Cheol – es difícil no sentir empatía por él después de ver su aflicción. Podrá atrapar al asesino después de todo eso? O tomará sus propias decisiones, yendo en contra de su configuración? A propósito, Seong-moo cambiará de opinión?

Plot holes within plot holes

Not everything in this drama is a bed of roses. Although the story within a story subject was a nice addition to the plot – without it the drama would be just another more of the same cliche romances – there are a lot of plot holes that did interfered in the narrative's cohesion. I think everything went pretty well during the first part of the show, until the first two plot twists – from this point the other plot twists regarding Kang Cheol were useless, he – and Yeon-joo of course – just suffered for nothing.

The story's pace is very fast during the first half of the drama so it gives us a lot of information in few episodes – which is good to catch the viewer's attention at first sight, in my opinion – and it does indeed. But this excess of events got out of the limits and it was quite bothering me during the second half. The first plot twists really gave me goosebumps, it was funny to see how unpredictable they could be through the story – perhaps because I'm a bad guesser too. Nevertheless the story became noticeably predictable as it approached its end. Besides there were things that wouldn't need to be explained to us in fact but, once it happens, it loses the magic of guessing what comes next.

Ni todo en este drama es flores y rosas. Aunque el tema historia dentro de una historia fue una buena adición a la trama – sin ella, el drama sería solo otro más de los mismos romances clichés – hay muchos huecos en la trama que realmente interfirieron en la cohesión de la narrativa. Creo que todo salió bastante bien durante la primera parte del programa, hasta los dos primeros giros de la trama – desde este momento, los otros giros de la trama con respecto a Kang Cheol fueron inútiles, él – y Yeon-joo, por supuesto – simplemente sufrieron por nada.

El ritmo de la historia es muy rápido durante la primera mitad del drama, así que nos da mucha información en pocos episodios – lo que es bueno para captar la atención del espectador a primera vista, en mi opinión – y de hecho lo hace. Pero este exceso de eventos se salió de los límites y me molestó bastante durante la segunda parte. Los primeros giros de la trama realmente me pusieron la piel de gallina, fue divertido ver cuán impredecibles podían ser a través de la historia – quizás porque soy mala adivinadora también. Sin embargo, la historia se volvió notablemente predecible a medida que se acercaba a su fin. Además, había cosas que, de hecho, no tendrían que ser explicadas, pero, una vez que suceden, pierde la magia de adivinar lo que viene después.

Final thoughts

In terms of acting I have nothing to complain about, the cast was very well selected – all the minor characters had good performances. Apart from the two main characters, there are two other actors that deserve a huge shout-out: Kim Eui-sung, the cartoonist, for his amazing versatile double acting – watch W and you'll know what I mean – however, his ending was extremely unfair. What's so wrong and sinful with writing a Webtoon? Basically there's a role exchange between him and his creation. But life's like this, huh?

Also I'll give a special shout-out to Lee Shi-eon, interpreting Park Soo-bong, the hilarious clumsy assistant. Although he avoided trouble, he was very loyal to both Seong-moo and Yeon-joo until the end. Besides, what made me like him more was the fact Soo-bong didn't have any romantic interest towards Yeon-joo – they're friends and that's it, there's no unrequited love between them. I think it's really annoying when there's a character that exists only for this purpose – unfortunately the same doesn't occurs with Yoon So-hee (Jung Yoo-jin), Kang Cheol's secretary, whose feelings towards him were explicit since the very beginning.

Besides the comical atmosphere between the main couple during their first meetings – and their sudden relationship in the midst of a whirlwind of incidents – once we see they truly developed feelings for each other, their chemistry is taken to another level. I haven't watched many K-dramas so far but I'm certain Lee Jong-suk and Han Hyo-joo are great acting together. Just a ranting about the lack of complexity regarding Yeon-joo's character – although she was the heroine many times, her life in her own world was quite boring. She deserved way more protagonism considering her potential. The same goes for the ending... It truly disappointed me, seems like they used all their creativity towards the 8 or 9 first episodes, overlapping lots of incidents – and overplaying the drama that made us think there was no solution to some problems – and ran out of inspiration to solve them consequently, being unable to finish it in an epic way.

Another shout-out to the OST, almost all songs are catchy and easy to sing along – I know just a little of Korean language however I could sing and understand the words easily. My favorite track is: Please Say Something, Even Though It Is a Lie (거짓말이라도 해줘요) by Park Bo-ram.

En términos de actuación, no tengo nada de qué quejarme, el elenco fue muy bien seleccionado – todos los personajes secundarios tuvieron buenas actuaciones. Aparte de los dos personajes principales, hay otros dos actores que merecen un gran reconocimiento: Kim Eui-sung, el caricaturista, por su increíble y versátil doble actuación – mira W y sabrás a qué me refiero – de todos modos, su final fue extremadamente injusto. Qué tiene de malo y pecaminoso en escribir un Webtoon? Básicamente, hay un intercambio de papeles entre él y su creación. Pero la vida es así, no?
También daré un saludo especial a Lee Shi-eon, interpretando a Park Soo-bong, el hilarante y torpe asistente. Aunque evitó los problemas, fue muy leal tanto a Seong-moo como a Yeon-joo hasta el final. Además, lo que hizo que me gustara más fue el hecho de que Soo-bong no tenía ningún interés romántico hacia Yeon-joo – son amigos y eso es todo, no hay amor no correspondido entre ellos. Creo que es realmente molesto cuando hay un personaje que existe solo para este propósito – desafortunadamente, no ocurre lo mismo con Yoon So-hee (Jung Yoo-jin), la secretaria de Kang Cheol, cuyos sentimientos hacia él fueron explícitos desde el principio.
Ps: Todavía estoy pensando de qué se tratan esas gafas sin lentes. jajaja

Además de la atmósfera cómica entre la pareja principal durante sus primeros encuentros – y su relación repentina en medio de un torbellino de incidentes – una vez que vemos que realmente desarrollaron sentimientos el uno por el otro, su química se lleva a otro nivel. No he visto muchos K-dramas hasta ahora, pero estoy segura de que Lee Jong-suk y Han Hyo-joo son excelentes actuando juntos. Solo una queja sobre la falta de complejidad con respecto al personaje de Yeon-joo – aunque ella fue la heroína muchas veces, su vida en su propio mundo era bastante aburrida. Se merecía mucho más protagonismo considerando su potencial. Lo mismo ocurre con el final... Realmente me decepcionó, parece que usaron toda la creatividad hacia los 8 o 9 primeros episodios, superponiendo muchos incidentes – y exagerando el drama que nos hizo pensar que no había solución para algunos problemas – y se quedaron sin inspiración para resolverlos en consecuencia, no pudiendo terminarlo de manera épica.

Otro saludo a la banda sonora, casi todas las canciones son pegajosas y fáciles de cantar – sé solo un poco del idioma coreano, pero pude cantar y entender las palabras con facilidad. Mi canción favorita es: Please Say Something, Even Though It Is a Lie (거짓말 이라도 해줘 요) de Park Bo-ram.

It has its flaws, but I still love it since it was the first K-drama I've watched.
