Review – "Alice" (2020) [ENG/ESP]

What's up, dear hivians! I hope you're all doing well.

Here I am back with another K-drama review, unlike the previous one I wrote for the community, this time I bring again a sci-fi themed one. I promised myself I'd try to vary the show genres I'm watching, but, well, I guess I can't stay away from time traveling shows for so long, heh. Without further ado, let's get into it.

The series I'm talking about today is called "Alice" (in hangul: 앨리스), as I prior said, it's a sci-fi series which explores fantastic/futuristic elements such as parallel universes and timelines, as well as, of course, time traveling, together with the magical touch of a prophecy related to those who travel through time. Besides that, the drama also offers the viewer lots of mystery not just about the naturally mind-blowing time traveling trope, but also regarding the unsolved crimes that happen beyond the barriers of space and time. Its premise is quite similar to a K-drama I also reviewed here, called "The King: Eternal Monarch" – if you hadn't seen it, you can check it here. Both are from SBS TV channel, both have Alice in Wonderland references – each in its own way – but The King was produced and released earlier than Alice, also the former has romance as its main topic, different from the latter – despite almost all reviews/recaps I had read said that Alice talks about romance in a mainstream way, it's not true at all. Let's say, there's a lot more to it than meets the eye.

Aquí estoy de vuelta con otra reseña de K-drama, a diferencia de la anterior que escribí para la comunidad, esta vez les traigo de nuevo una de ciencia ficción. Me prometí que intentaría variar los géneros de los shows que estoy viendo, pero bueno, supongo que no puedo alejarme de los shows de viajes en el tiempo por tanto tiempo, jej. Sin más preámbulos, vamos al grano.

La serie de la que hablo hoy se llama "Alice" (en hangul: 앨리스), como dije anteriormente, es una serie de ciencia ficción que explora elementos fantásticos/futuristas como universos paralelos y líneas temporales, así como, por supuesto, viajes en el tiempo, junto con el toque mágico de una profecía relacionada con los que viajan en el tiempo. Además de eso, el drama también ofrece al espectador mucho misterio no solo sobre el tropo naturalmente alucinante de el viaje en el tiempo, sino también sobre los crímenes sin resolver que ocurren más allá de las barreras del espacio y tiempo. Su premisa es bastante similar a un K-drama que también revisé aquí, llamado "The King: Eternal Monarch" – si no lo has visto, puedes chequearlo aquí. Ambos son del canal de televisión SBS, ambos tienen referencias a Alicia en el país de las maravillas – cada uno a su manera – pero The King fue producido y lanzado antes que Alice, también el primero tiene el romance como tema principal, diferente del segundo – a pesar de casi todas las reseñas/resúmenes que había leído decían que Alice habla de romance de manera convencional, no es cierto en absoluto. Digamos que hay mucho más de lo que parece.

Synopsis

2050

In the future, humanity succeeded in controlling time. Traveling through time became a possibility thanks to the creation of "Alice", a high-tech agency specialized in such services. The organization aims to regulate and control these travels, in order to prevent them from being wrongly used and, consequently, ending up causing trouble among dimensions. Their main objective was to heal the wounds of the past, that is, Alice clients could go back in time to see their deceased loved ones once again, or even finish some incomplete errands – always following the basic rules, like "no murdering" and "no drawing unnecessary attention".

However, rumors about the ending of time travel had started spreading and the key lied in a mysterious book of prophecy. Two Alice agents, Yoon Tae-yi (Kim Hee-sun) and Yoo Min-hyuk (Kwak Si-yang) are sent to the past, more precisely to the year of 1992, in order to retrieve the book, which was in possession of Dr. Jang Dong-sik (Jang Hyun-sung). It was believed to contain in it both the beginning and the ending of time traveling, as well as how this tragic fate could be avoided – or achieved.

En el futuro, la humanidad logró controlar el tiempo. Viajar en el tiempo se convirtió en una posibilidad gracias a la creación de "Alice", una agencia de alta tecnología especializada en este tipo de servicios. La organización tiene como objetivo regular y controlar estos viajes, para evitar que sean mal utilizados y, en consecuencia, terminen causando problemas entre las dimensiones. Su objetivo principal era sanar las heridas del pasado, o sea, los clientes de Alice podrían retroceder en el tiempo para ver a sus seres queridos fallecidos una vez más, o incluso terminar algunos mandados incompletos – siempre siguiendo las reglas básicas, como "no matar" y "no llamar la atención innecesariamente".

Sin embargo, rumores sobre el fin de los viajes en el tiempo habían empezado a propagarse y la clave estaba en un misterioso libro de la profecía. Dos agentes de Alice, Yoon Tae-yi (Kim Hee-sun) y Yoo Min-hyuk (Kwak Si-yang) son enviados al pasado, más precisamente al año 1992, para recuperar el libro, que estaba en posesión del doctor Jang Dong-sik (Jang Hyun-sung). Se creía que contenía tanto el principio como el fin de los viajes en el tiempo, así como la forma de evitar – o conseguir – este trágico destino.

1992

It wasn't just Alice people who were after the book, though. A rogue group of independent time travelers also knew about the prophecy – the so called "brokers" were actually travelers who acted illegally, that is, their travels weren't controlled by Alice's institution, hence they could do whatever they wanted in the past and had no concern about keeping a low profile. So, one of these brokers, Lee Se-hoon, came to Dr. Jang's house before Tae-yi and Min-hyuk and ended up killing the scientist while trying to get the book. However, before dying, the scientist tore off the last page and gave to his little daughter so the prophecy could be protected. In the end, the couple from Alice managed to take the book with them.

Before they come back to Alice, Tae-yi finds out she's 12 weeks pregnant. Min-hyuk suggests her to get an abortion, since she had already passed through the wormhole several times, so the radiation could cause serious health problems to the fetus. Although she agreed with her boyfriend at first, she chose to have the baby and stay in the past – Tae-yi left a letter to Min-hyuk explaining her decision and fled with the book. She eventually changed her name to Park Sun-young and gave birth to a boy called Park Jin-gyeom.

Sin embargo, no era sólo la gente de Alice que buscaba el libro. Un grupo rebelde independiente de viajeros del tiempo también conocía la profecía – los llamados "brokers" eran en realidad viajeros que actuaban ilegalmente, es decir, sus viajes no eran controlados por la institución de Alice, por lo tanto podían hacer lo que quisieran en el pasado y no tenían ninguna preocupación en pasar desapercebidos. Así que, uno de estos brokers, Lee Se-hoon, llegó a la casa del Dr. Jang antes que Tae-yi y Min-hyuk y acabó matando al científico mientras intentaba obtener el libro. 2010

Park Jin-gyeom (Joo-won) is a high schooler who suffers from alexithymia, a neuropsychological condition which affects the ability to express and understand others' emotions, which was probably caused by radiation exposure. Thus, his mother dedicated her life to take care of him, so that he would live a normal life. One day, an incident occurred at school in which he was falsely accused of pushing a classmate out of the building and ended up being imprisoned by detective Go Hyun-seok (Kim Sang-ho). Sun-young fought until the end to prove his innocence.

Days after, on the night of the super blood moon – which was also Sun-young's birthday – a tragedy occurred. While they were celebrating at home, Sun-young left alone to buy more soju – it was when she saw red drones from the future on her way back home and they started following her. Jin-gyeom goes out to look for her, but as soon as he steps back into the house, he finds his mom on the ground, covered in blood – someone had just shot her to death. Crying, Jin-gyeom desperately tries to call an ambulance, but his mother stops him and says weird and nonsense things before passing away. He promises himself he will find the one who had done that to her at all costs.

10 years later, Jin-gyeom became a detective lieutenant at Seoul Nambu Station. A sequence of strange crime cases started to happen around the country, all of them remaining unsolved and unexplained. A particular case of a girl, Eun-soo, who got kidnapped by her own mother, Sun-hee – who in turn was out of the country – was the one which drew Jin-gyeom's attention the most. While he was investigating, he spotted the same futuristic drone from the night of his mother's murder and started following it through the city – that's when he comes across a woman who looked exactly like his mother. As they see each other, time stopped for a while for him.

Una secuencia de crímenes extraños comenzó a ocurrir en todo el país, todos ellos seguindo sin resolver ni explicar. Un caso particular de una niña, Eun-soo, que fue secuestrada por su propia madre, Sun-hee – que a su vez estaba fuera del país – fue el que más llamó la atención de Jin-gyeom. Doppelgängers

It didn't take long to Jin-gyeom realize the existence of time travelers. He came across some doppelgänger occurrences while investigating those strange cases. In the first case mentioned above, Sun-hee from the future ended up killing her counterpart from 2020, in order to take her place – the police managed to find the body but it mysteriously disappeared shortly after. There was also a murder case in which a student was killed by a man called Hong-seob, who claimed he was the victim's younger brother – but the victim's real brother was actually a 4-year-old kid, also called Hong-seob. During a fight with Jin-gyeom, Hong-seob lost his time card – a device used for time traveling – and it ended up in Jin-gyeom's hands. Jin-gyeom, in turn, remembers that his mother used to have one of those. Moved by curiosity, he goes to Hanguk University to get some help from the Physics Department regarding the unknown device – what he didn't expect was that one of the professors responsible was his mom's doppelgänger he had already seen the other day.

No tardó mucho para Jin-gyeom darse cuenta de la existencia de los viajeros del tiempo. Se topó con algunos casos de doppelgängers mientras investigaba esos extraños casos. En el primer caso mencionado anteriormente, Sun-hee del futuro acabó matando a su homóloga de 2020 para ocupar su lugar – la policía logró encontrar el cuerpo, pero desapareció misteriosamente poco después. También hubo un caso de asesinato en que un estudiante fue muerto por un hombre llamado Hong-seob, que afirmaba ser el hermano menor de la víctima – pero el "verdadero" hermano de la víctima era en realidad un niño de 4 años, también llamado Hong-seob. Durante una pelea con Jin-gyeom, Hong-seob perdió su tarjeta de tiempo – un dispositivo que se usa para viajar en el tiempo – y terminó en las manos de Jin-gyeom. Jin-gyeom, a su vez, recuerda que su madre solía tener uno de esos. Deep bonds

Although Sun-young had said on her deathbed that, if one day, by chance, Jin-gyeom ever gets to see someone who looks like her, he should avoid her at all costs and pretend he doesn't know her – obviously that's not what happened. After their more than embarrassing first meeting and a couple of misunderstandings, she introduces herself as Yoon Tae-yi, a physics professor and time travel researcher – the same name as Park Sun-young before going to 1992. Even knowing that she wasn't his mom, Jin-gyeom couldn't hold his emotions every time they met – making, therefore, his long-term friend, Kim Do-yeon (Lee Da-in), veeery jealous.

Well, as I prior mentioned in the intro, Alice received a lot of criticism due to the romantic vibe that was forced between the protagonists – indeed, as they get closer, their relationship gets even more problematic, resembling the theory of Oedipus complex, but in an inverse way. Yes, inverse because the only one who demonstrated some romantic interest at all was Tae-yi, not Jin-gyeom himself – and it's somewhat understandable, since she had never seen him before and naturally wouldn't associate him as her son. But, unlike her, Jin-gyeom had genuine son-to-mother feelings towards Tae-yi until the end – even knowing she wasn't his real mom, he promised he would protect her at all costs. I personally didn't feel annoyed by this complicated relationship, considering that absolutely nothing happened between them in the end.

Aunque Sun-young había dicho en su lecho de muerte que, si algún día, por casualidad, Jin-gyeom llegase a ver a alguien que se pareciera a ella, debería evitarla a toda costa y fingir que no la conocía – obviamente, eso no fue lo que ocurrió. Después de su más que embarazoso primer encuentro y un par de malentendidos, ella se presenta como Yoon Tae-yi, profesora de física e investigadora de viajes en el tiempo – el mismo nombre que Park Sun-young antes de irse a 1992. Incluso sabiendo que ella no era su madre, Jin-gyeom no podía contener sus emociones cada vez que se encontraban – haciendo, por tanto, que su amiga de toda la vida, Kim Do-yeon (Lee Da-in), se pusiera muuuy celosa.

Bueno, como ya mencioné en la introducción, Alice recibió muchas críticas debido a la vibe romántica que se forzó entre los protagonistas – por supuesto, a medida que se acercan, su relación se vuelve aún más problemática, asemejándose a la teoría del complejo de Edipo, pero de forma inversa. Sí, inversa porque la única que demostró cierto interés romántico fue Tae-yi, no el propio Jin-gyeom – y es algo comprensible, ya que ella nunca lo había visto antes y, naturalmente, no lo asociaría con su hijo. Pero, a diferencia de ella, Jin-gyeom tenía sentimientos genuinos de hijo a madre hacia Tae-yi hasta el final – incluso sabiendo que ella no era su verdadera madre, prometió que la protegería a toda costa. Personalmente, no me molestó esta complicada relación, teniendo en cuenta que al final no pasó absolutamente nada entre ellos.

Multiverses x time loop

By this point, tons of storyline layers were being developed and entangled in one another whereas Jin-gyeom and Tae-yi started to understand better the logistics of time traveling – and, mostly, Jin-gyeom's control over time started to increase as he got more and more exposed to these travels. According to the prophecy, that's because he was the child born through the barriers of time – the drama gradually reveals us where the key of time travel lies and also that Jin-gyeom's character, as well as his connections and those around him, are way more complex and tricky than one could imagine.

That's when the multiverse theory is explicitly put into action – time travelers, actually, travel through universes, that is, they go back and forth between different timelines so as not to cause any change on their own timeline. This explains why, for example, professor Tae-yi and Jin-gyeom's mother aren't the same person, despite being identical. Even in a quite confused way, the drama succeeded in portraying these parallel universes by showing the differences in each one – like when the two main characters ended up in 2010, but in a parallel timeline, where everything had followed a different path than their original timeline. However, when the plot incorporated the time loop resource, things started to get seriously out of control – initially it provided some amazingly mind-blowing plot twists, but it didn't take long to pop out plot holes here and there, due to the contradictions between theories that neither make sense together nor complement each other. And from there onwards it only gets worse.

Por este punto, un montón de capas de historias se estaban desarrollando y enredando entre sí, mientras que Jin-gyeom y Tae-yi comenzaron a comprender mejor la logística del viaje temporal – y, sobre todo, el control de Jin-gyeom sobre el tiempo empezó a aumentar a medida que se exponía más y más a estos viajes. Según la profecía, eso es porque él era el niño que nació a través de las barreras del tiempo – el drama nos revela gradualmente dónde se encuentra la clave del viaje en el tiempo y también que el personaje de Jin-gyeom, así como sus conexiones y los que le rodean, son mucho más complejos y engañosos de lo que uno podría imaginar.

Ahí es cuando la teoría del multiverso se pone explícitamente en acción – los viajeros del tiempo, en realidad, viajan a través de universos, es decir, van y vienen entre diferentes líneas de tiempo para no causar ningún cambio en su propia línea temporal. Esto explica por qué, por ejemplo, profesora Tae-yi y la madre de Jin-gyeom no son la misma persona, a pesar de ser idénticas. Aunque de forma bastante confusa, el drama logró retratar estos universos paralelos al mostrar las diferencias en cada uno – como cuando los dos protagonistas terminaron en 2010, pero en una línea de tiempo paralela, donde todo había seguido un camino diferente al de su línea de tiempo original. Sin embargo, cuando la trama incorporó el recurso del bucle de tiempo, las cosas comenzaron a salirse de control – al principio proporcionó algunos giros de trama sorprendentemente alucinantes, pero no pasó mucho tiempo para que surgiesen huecos en la trama aquí y allá, debido a las contradicciones entre teorías que ni tienen sentido juntas ni se complementan entre sí. Y de ahí en adelante solo empeora.

Omega x sigma

In general, time travelers were divided according to their interests – there were those who wanted time travel to stop and those who didn't. Apart from Alice's institution, there were two groups of rogue travelers who were disputing the book of prophecy – the first one, whose members had the sigma symbol (Σ) on their skin, was the one that wanted time travel to continue. This group had a mysterious leader, often mentioned as "the Teacher", whose identity was unknown even among their members. On the other hand, the omega (Ω) team, in which Sun-young was part of, was the one who wanted time travel to stop. In the past, she joined the physics professor Seok Oh-won (Choi Won-young) to develop a research about time traveling. After her death, he invited the young Tae-yi to be part of the research, but hadn't told her the truth behind it all – she just realized it when she was already a target of both the members of sigma team and, mostly, the Teacher, who had strong deeper reasons than just stop her intentions regarding time travel.

En general, los viajeros del tiempo se dividían según sus intereses – había quienes querían que el viaje en el tiempo se detuviera y quienes no. Aparte de la institución de Alice, había dos grupos de viajeros rebeldes que se disputaban el libro de la profecía – el primero, cuyos miembros tenían el símbolo sigma (Σ) en la piel, era el que quería que el viaje temporal continuase. Este grupo tenía un líder misterioso, a menudo mencionado como "el Profesor", cuya identidad era desconocida incluso entre sus miembros. Por otro lado, el grupo omega (Ω), del que formaba parte Sun-young, era el que quería que el viaje en el tiempo se detuviera. En el pasado, ella se unió al profesor de física Seok Oh-won (Choi Won-young) para desarrollar un estudio sobre los viajes temporales. Después su muerte, invitó a la joven Tae-yi a formar parte de la investigación, pero no le contó la verdad que había detrás de todo esto – solo se dio cuenta cuando ella ya era un objetivo tanto de los miembros del equipo sigma como, principalmente, del Profesor, que tenía fuertes razones más profundas que simplemente detener sus intenciones con respecto al viaje en el tiempo.

Distorted roles

Still talking about him, professor Seok is by far one of the most brilliant characters of this show – not just because he was always some steps ahead of others, but specially due to this character's chaotic nature, which destabilized everyone, wherever he went. This caused almost like an identity crisis among the other characters, blurring the fragile barriers of what it means to be good or evil, transforming each and every character and, more than anything, resignifying professor Seok's own intentions with each new episode. He goes from hero to villain and vice versa in a blink of an eye, depending on the point of view – I still have mixed thoughts about his real intentions, actually.

On the other hand, the Teacher is portrayed as the classic mysterious dark hooded figure, the utmost enemy dressed in black. However, he surely was more than just a mere villain to those who wanted to stop time travel – Jin-gyeom believed that man was the one who killed his mother. So, from a certain point forward, a cat and mouse chasing had started – Jin-gyeom's aim was to catch the Teacher in order to do his mother justice, and, in turn, the Teacher's target was the creator of time travel, Tae-yi – I personally felt that it became a bit tiring watching this "hide and seek" after some episodes, but it didn't ruin the pace that much. At first, the Teacher's presence and importance to the plot was subtle – as the drama progressed, it evolved to the focus of the whole thing. His identity was kept well hidden until the end as well, however, it was nothing enjoyable at all when he revealed it... And I'm not talking about the identity itself – watch Alice and you'll understand me.

Todavía hablando de él, profesor Seok es, de lejos, uno de los personajes más brillantes de este show – no solo porque siempre estuvo un paso por delante de los demás, sino especialmente por la naturaleza caótica de este personaje, que desestabilizaba a todos, dondequiera que fuera. Esto provocó casi como una crisis de identidad entre los demás personajes, desdibujando las frágiles barreras de lo que significa ser bueno o malo, transformando a todos y cada uno de los personajes y, sobre todo, resignificando las propias intenciones del profesor Seok con cada nuevo episodio. Él pasa de héroe a villano y viceversa en un parpadear de ojos, dependiendo del punto de vista – en realidad, todavía tengo pensamientos ambiguos sobre sus verdaderas intenciones.

Por otro lado, el Profesor es retratado como la clásica figura misteriosa y oscura encapuchada, el máximo enemigo vestido de negro. Sin embargo, él era ciertamente más que un mero villano para los que querían detener el viaje temporal – Jin-gyeom creía que ese hombre era el que había matado a su madre. Entonces, desde cierto punto en adelante, se empezó una persecución de gato y ratón – el objetivo de Jin-gyeom era atrapar al Profesor para hacer justicia a su madre y, a su vez, el objetivo del Profesor era la creadora del viaje en el tiempo, Tae-yi – personalmente, me pareció un poco agotador ver este "escondite" después de algunos episodios, pero no arruinó demasiado el ritmo. Al principio, la presencia e importancia del Profesor en la trama era sutil – a medida que avanzaba el drama, se convirtió en el centro de todo. Su identidad también se mantuvo bien oculta hasta el final, sin embargo, no fue nada agradable cuando la reveló... Y no me refiero a la identidad en sí – ve Alice y me entenderás.

Final thoughts

Overdramatic, thrilling and controversial until the end, Alice had its ending directly inspired by the German series Dark, but in a forced "happy-ending" nonsensical way – the climax outcome was absolutely one of the worst I've ever seen so far, even more so when considering the huge potential the series had in developing something more "realistic" and that would connect better with the theories used and the prophecy – not even the fantastic/magical part escaped from having a bunch of plot abysses holes. It was so disappointing that it turn out to be absurdly ridiculous – the writers simply threw all the characters' efforts down the drain with an ending like this. And now thinking about it, the problem may have been because the drama was written by 3 people, not just one. Maybe this was the cause of all the confusion, who knows?

In terms of production, the CGI, most of the time, was pretty decent. Each episode opened with a quote, usually related to some event that was going to happen – that was a positive point for me. However, the OST could be a lot better – the songs' lyrics had nothing to do with the series as whole, but the songs themselves were good. My favorite ones were "Secret" by Yuju from GFriend feat. ISHXRK and "The Star" (in hangul: 별) by Lim Han-byul.

Despite the ending, all actors were pretty good at acting – this series was the reason I had fallen in love with Joo-won, by the way – both the heroes and the villains. However, the greatest villain of all characters was ultimately the time – it was both the most precious and most dangerous thing, and not even the one who could control it was safe from falling victim to it.

Sobredramática, electrizante y controvertida hasta el final, Alice tuvo un final inspirado directamente en la serie alemana Dark, pero en una forma forzada de "final feliz" sin sentido – el desenlace del clímax fue absolutamente uno de los peores que he visto hasta ahora, sobre todo teniendo en cuenta el enorme potencial que tenía la serie para desarrollar algo más "realista" y que conectaría mejor con las teorías utilizadas y la profecía – ni siquiera la parte fantástica/mágica escapó de tener un montón de abismos huecos en la trama. Fue tan decepcionante que resultó ser absurdamente ridículo – los escritores simplemente tiraron todos los esfuerzos de los personajes por el desagüe con un final como este.
