Parasite Movie - K contest #48/ 기생충 영화 - K 콘테스트 #48

I think at this point, I can confidently say I am fully immersed in Korean cinema and dramas and yes sometimes i just watch them so i can have an entry to make in this community. What started as casual curiosity has slowly turned me into a fan of the movies, i now spend nights glued to subtitles, and i dare say i am picking up a few words now i also have to say that i am emotionally invested in fictional characters that somehow feel more real than most shows I grew up watching. I am also starting to recognise the actors across multiple movies, although i still feel like i am left behind a bit. Which has lead me to watching the movie “Parasite”. I’ve always seen raves about it and the multiple awards that it has won and decided to see for myself what the hype was all about and I finally sat down to watch it properly. The beginning to the last ending scene i must say was quite captivating.
The thing about Parasite also is that it doesn’t even feel like one specific genre. One minute you are laughing because the dialogue and situations are genuinely funny, then the next minute your chest feels heavy because of how painfully realistic everything becomes. It starts off a certain way and then it completely pivots into something else entirely.

The story follows the Kim family, a struggling poor family living in a tiny apartment. They are smart, capable people, but life has dealt them terrible cards financially and through a series of calculated moves and of course lies, they slowly infiltrate the lives of the wealthy Park family by securing jobs inside their luxurious household. The son becomes an English tutor, the sister poses as an art therapist, the father becomes a driver, and the mother takes over as housekeeper.
At first, it almost feels satisfying watching them outsmart the system. You even find yourself rooting for them because you understand where their desperation comes from, or should i say i personally do. The movie and the directing of the movie does a brilliant job making you sympathize with people who are technically being deceptive.

The contrast between the rich family’s beautiful modern mansion and the poor family’s cramped basement apartment says so much without needing dialogue. Rain means something completely different depending on which social class you belong to. For one family it is cozy weather while for the other it becomes a nightmare. It kind of puts life into a perspective as a certain people are praying for rain so that they can stay indoors and experience the coziness, some people are praying against it because they know that it will lead to flood or destruction. Even the way the characters walk up and down staircases throughout the movie carries symbolism about class and status.

And i dare say there is the tension. My God!!, the tension in this movie is unbelievable. There were scenes where I genuinely forgot to breathe because of how intense things became. The film constantly keeps you on edge because every small lie feels like it could all collapse at any second. Of course i wouldn’t want to spoil much for those that haven’t watched it. The deeper the story goes, the more you realize this isn’t just a movie about one family tricking another family. It is really about class inequality and the invisible lines society creates between people. The rich and poor characters exist in completely different worlds despite living in the same city, and the movie constantly reminds you of that gap.

I also have to talk about the acting because every single person delivered. Nobody felt out of place and I completely understand now why Parasite won so many awards and became such a global phenomenon. It genuinely deserves every bit of praise it gets. This is not just one of the best Korean movies I have seen, it is honestly one of the best movies I have watched.

기생충에 대한 또 다른 점은 특정 장르로 느껴지지 않는다는 것입니다. 한 순간에는 대사와 상황이 정말로 웃겨서 웃고 있다가, 다음 순간에는 모든 것이 너무나도 현실적이어서 가슴이 무겁게 느껴집니다. 처음에는 어떤 식으로 시작하다가, 완전히 다른 방향으로 전환됩니다.

이 이야기는 작은 아파트에 사는 어려운 형편의 김 가족을 따라갑니다. 그들은 똑똑하고 유능한 사람들이지만, 삶은 그들에게 재정적으로 끔찍한 카드를 주었습니다. 그러나 일련의 계산된 행동과 물론 거짓말을 통해, 그들은 천천히 부유한 박 가족의 삶에 침투하여 그들의 호화로운 가정에서 일자리를 확보하게 됩니다. 아들은 영어 튜터가 되고, 딸은 미술 치료사로 가장하고, 아버지는 운전사가 되며, 어머니는 가정부 역할을 맡습니다.

처음에는 그들이 시스템을 능가하는 모습을 보는 것이 거의 만족스러웠어요. 심지어 그들의 절박함이 어디서 오는지 이해하게 되면서 그들을 응원하게 되기도 해요, 아니, 개인적으로 그렇게 느꼈어요. 영화와 그 연출은 기술적으로 속임수를 쓰고 있는 사람들에게 공감하게 만드는 데 훌륭한 역할을 합니다.

부유한 가족의 아름답고 현대적인 저택과 가난한 가족의 비좁은 지하 아파트 사이의 대조는 대사 없이도 많은 것을 말해줍니다. 비는 당신이 어떤 사회 계층에 속하느냐에 따라 완전히 다른 의미를 가집니다. 한 가족에게는 아늑한 날씨지만 다른 가족에게는 악몽이 됩니다. 어떤 사람들은 비가 와서 집 안에 머물며 아늑함을 느끼기를 기도하는 반면, 어떤 사람들은 홍수나 파괴로 이어질 것을 알기 때문에 비가 오지 않기를 기도하는 것처럼, 삶을 다르게 바라보게 됩니다. 영화 전반에 걸쳐 등장인물들이 계단을 오르내리는 방식조차 계급과 지위를 상징합니다.

그리고 감히 말하건대, 그곳에 긴장이 있습니다. 맙소사!! , 이 영화의 긴장은 믿을 수 없을 정도야. 상황이 너무 긴박해서 숨을 쉬는 것도 잊을 정도였던 장면들이 있었습니다. 영화는 끊임없이 긴장감을 유지하게 만드는데, 작은 거짓말 하나하나가 언제 무너질지 모른다는 느낌을 주기 때문이에요. 물론, 아직 보지 않은 사람들을 위해 많이 스포일러하고 싶지 않아요. 이야기가 깊어질수록, 이 영화가 단순히 한 가족이 다른 가족을 속이는 것에 관한 것이 아니라는 것을 더 깨닫게 됩니다. 사실 이 영화는 계급 불평등과 사회가 사람들 사이에 만들어내는 보이지 않는 경계에 관한 것입니다. 부자와 가난한 캐릭터들은 같은 도시에 살고 있음에도 불구하고 완전히 다른 세계에 존재하며, 영화는 그 격차를 끊임없이 상기시킵니다.

연기도 언급해야 할 것 같아요. 모든 배우들이 정말 잘해냈거든요. 아무도 어색해 보이지 않았고, 이제야 왜 기생충이 그렇게 많은 상을 받고 전 세계적인 현상이 되었는지 완전히 이해가 됩니다. 정말로 모든 찬사를 받을 자격이 있어요. 이건 제가 본 한국 영화 중에서 최고의 영화일 뿐만 아니라, 솔직히 제가 본 영화 중에서 최고의 영화 중 하나입니다.
