[Movie] (ESP-ENG) Normal | A city that is nothing like it seems - Review!

When you suddenly discover that a movie is from the creators of John Wick, your first thought is, "I have to see it." Sometimes, when you decide to sit down and watch a film, you do so with anticipation, especially if it's one you've heard absolutely nothing about. Looking for something to watch, I stumbled upon "Normal," starring the great Bob Odenkirk and featuring Lena Headey, the famous Cersei from Game of Thrones, and Henry Winkler—all well-known actors in a story unknown to most. To my surprise, this movie turned out to be the complete opposite of what I expected. Honestly, I had no faith in it, and in the end, it turned out to be a very basic plot with a wildly entertaining development where the action and the ways people die will definitely give you something to talk about.
Cuando de buenas a primeras descubres que una película es de los creadores de John Wick lo primero que piensas es que: "tengo que verla". A veces cuando uno decide sentarse a ver un film se hace con expectación, sobretodo si es uno del que no has escuchado absolutamente nada. Buscando que ver me topé con "Normal" protagonizada por el gran Bob Odenkirk y acompañado por Lena Headey, la famosa Cersei en GOT, y Henry Winkler, actores más que conocidos en una historia desconocida para la mayoría. Mi sorpresa es que esta película terminó resultado todo lo contrario a lo esperado, honestamente no le tenía nada de fe y al final resultó ser una trama muy básica pero con un desarrollo muy alocado en donde la acción y las formas de morir darán mucho de que hablar.
We meet Ulysses (Odenkirk), a sheriff who arrives in Normal, Minnesota on an interim basis after the previous chief's death. At first glance, this town seems incredibly welcoming, friendly, and peaceful—a small place where everyone knows each other and nothing much ever happens. The reality is quite different. One day, a bank robbery occurs, catching everyone in the police force off guard and surprised because such things SHOULDN'T happen (there's a reason for that). The robbery goes horribly wrong, and that's when Ulysses realizes who the residents of Normal really are. He discovers that nothing is as it seems and that behind it all are threads and conspiracies that control life in this small town.
Tenemos a Ulysses (Odenkirk), un sheriff que llega a Normal, Minnesota de manera interina ya que el antiguo jefe había muerto. Este pueblo a simple vista parece de lo más acogedor, amable y tranquilo que se puede decir, uno pequeño en donde todos se conocen y nunca pasa gran cosa. La realidad es otra. Un día ocurre un robo al banco, cosa que agarra a todos en la policía desprevenidos y sorprendidos porque esas cosas NO DEBERÍAN de pasar (hay un por qué). La cosa es que todo termina muy mal en dicho asalto y es ahí cuando el bueno de Ulysses se da cuenta de quienes son realmente los habitantes de Normal, descubrirá que nada es lo que parecía y que detrás de todo hay hilos y conspiraciones que mueven la vida en dicho lugar.
Everything has an origin; this city isn't the way it is by chance. Without giving away too much, I could say that they made a deal with the wrong person, and when a stranger like Ulysses arrives wanting to set things right, that whole criminal network collapses. The result? A truly surprising plot twist. Several things stand out. The dark humor. There are things that will make you laugh; it's hard to explain, but it has a very silly comedy at times that is extremely effective, and it works because it has that dark/black undertone that allows it to blend in with the violence and the psychopathic nature of the characters. The interactions, the personalities, the surreal things that happen—everything comes together to make you genuinely laughable.
Todo tiene un origen, esta ciudad no es como es porque si. Sin querer no dar mucho spoiler pudiera decir que hicieron un trato con quien no debía y cuando llega un forastero como Ulysses a querer hacer las cosas bien pues todo ese entramado criminal se cae. El resultado? - una acción muy sorprendente la verdad. Varias cosas que destacar. El humor negro que tiene. Hay cosas con las que se van a reír, es complicado de explicar pero tiene una comedia muy tonta a veces que es sumamente efectiva y lo es porque tiene esa tinte oscuro/negro que la hace camuflarse entre la violencia y lo psicópatas que son los personajes. Las interacciones, las personalidades, las cosas surrealistas que pasan, todo se une para que sinceramente te de gracia todo.
The second, and perhaps most striking, aspect is the action. I was very surprised to see Odenkirk in this type of role, playing a tough sheriff who knows how to fight, throw punches, and all with choreography very much in the style of John Wick, certainly. This brings me to the violence and the ways people die. You know how people die in those kinds of films, right? - here we see exactly the same thing. Deaths resulting from skillful blows, but others that are very much like "Final Destination," those that occur due to a series of events that happen and almost by chance someone ends up dead. But of course, before we get to that, we see a good dose of fights and chaos. Lots of blood from very striking deaths, explosions, bodies flying, mutilated bodies, even decapitations. Believe me when I say you don't expect any of what happens in this film.
Lo segundo y quizás lo más llamativo es la acción que tiene. Me sorprendió mucho ver a Odenkirk en este tipo de papeles interpretando a un sheriff duro, que sabe pelear, dar golpes y todo bajo coreografías muy a lo John Wick, ciertamente. Esto me lleva a la violencia y las formas de morir. Si ubican como muere la gente en ese tipo de films, no? - acá vemos tal cual lo mismo. Muertes producto de golpes con destreza pero otras que son muy a lo "Destino Final", esas que se dan por una serie de eventos que pasan y casi que de carambola termina alguien muerto. Pero claro, antes de llegar a esto vemos unas buenas dosis de peleas y caos. Mucha sangre producto de muertes muy llamativas, explosiones, cuerpos volando, cuerpos mutilados, hasta decapitaciones. Créanme cuando les digo que no esperan nada de lo que pasa en este film.
Odenkirk's performance is quite good and decent considering I didn't have him in mind for this genre. He's very capable, serious, and has that innate comedic touch he possesses. In the end, this film is never boring; it's an hour and a half long, which makes it fly by and very enjoyable. The first part is a bit slow, but that's just to provide context for the situation and the town's unique inhabitants. The second part is pure cinema. As I said, everything is very linear; there aren't any big plot twists, but they're not needed. Highly recommended if you want to watch something cool to pass the time; it was a very pleasant surprise. I'll leave the trailer below.
La actuación de Odenkirk es bastante buena y decente considerando que no lo tenía en mente para este género. Mucha solvencia, seriedad y con este toque cómico que él tiene innato. Al final esta película no aburre en ningún momento, dura hora y media lo que hace que se pase rápido y se disfrute mucho. La primera parte es algo lenta pero es solo para dar contexto de la situación y de los habitantes tan particulares de ese pueblo. Ya la se segunda es cine puro. Como dije todo es muy lineal, no hay grandes plot twist pero tampoco les hace falta. Muy recomendada si quieres ver algo cool para pasar el rato, fue una muy agradable sorpresa. La vi hace unos días y me gusto, me pareció bastante entretenida. Buena accion, buenas muertes y también tiene su toque de humor.
A mi me sorprendió la verdad, no esperaba ver tanta acción y sangre junta en una película de Odenkirk.
