María y yo - Documental sobre un caso de autismo || Reseña y opinión

Es muy diferente ver películas sobre autismo que un documental protagonizado por las personas que viven con esta condición, ya que te muestra en realidad como es la vida y las dificultades que se enfrentan.

En lo particular prefiero ver documentales sobre ciencia o casos criminales importantes; sin embargo, María y yo (documental) me llamó la atención porque trata sobre autismo y siento que he vivido con una persona con esta condición que no ha sido diagnosticada como tal y ha sido una experiencia difícil y dolorosa. Creo que la razón principal de verla fue descubrir cuanta similitud hay con mi familiar.

Sinopsis

María y yo, es una documental basada en la vida de María una joven con autismo y la relación con su familia especialmente con su padre, quien cuenta toda la historia a partir de cómics creados por él y que le simplificó la comunicación con María, estos dibujos fueron el puente para comprender a María y para darse a entender. Durante el documental vemos un viaje de vacaciones donde María tiene la experiencia de montarse en avión e ir al mar, allí podemos ver sus reacciones con el mundo y la rutina con su padre.

Durante las grabaciones hay entrevistas con la madre de María, sus profesores y algunos familiares. Se evidencia la confusión de los padres al descubrir que algo no andaba bien cuando María era una bebé y una vez diagnosticada el dolor que causa saber que nunca será una persona normal e independiente. El peso sobre los hombros de los padres o familiares con una persona con condición es muy grande, asfixiante y agotador.

La madre de María entre lágrimas recuerda como fueron esos primeros años, donde tuvo que olvidarse de trabajar para dedicarse exclusivamente al cuidado de su hija. También muestran a una hermana de María quien la acompaña hacer su rutina de higiene personal como bañarse, depilarse las piernas, poner la mesa o levantar su plato y lavarlo.

Para el caso de espectro autista de María las cosas más sencillas requieren el triple de esfuerzo, caminar y sostener su cuerpo es una tarea gigante, pero independientemente de lo difícil que es para quienes cuidan a alguien con autismo estas personas aprender amar de una forma incondicional y su mayor virtud es la paciencia, que la desarrollan a través de cada prueba.

El padre de María creó una novela homónima que inspiró el documental, refrescando al televidente de la dura realidad, ya que la dirección pasa del recurso de video convencional a mirar la vida a través del comic como la vería María.

El documental no solo muestra como es el diario vivir de María sino que también como es su personalidad y las cualidades y habilidades que posee, su buena memoria para recordar rostros y nombres aunque haya visto y compartido una sola vez con una persona, los momentos de aislamiento, el disfrute de contemplar los granos de arena del mar o jugar con papeles de colores. Transmiten un día de escuela y como son las actividades que realizan.

Para el cierre del documental festejaron un cumpleaños de María donde invitaron a sus familiares, amigos y vecinos. Fue una gran fiesta con muchas personas, comida y música. María se ve feliz disfrutando de todo, y me llama la atención toda la evolución de esta niña, pues es muy sociable, acepta abrazos de forma abierta y no la perturba los ruidos, supongo que se debe a todo el trabajo que realizo su familia con ella y las herramientas con las que contaron. Puedo decir que esa niña tiene más vida social que yo 🤣.

Pensamientos finales

La relación que tenía María con su padre era hermosa, llena de respeto, amor y comprensión. Lamentablemente, sucedió el mayor temor que tenía el padre, morir antes que su hija. Para realizar esta reseña investigué un poco y me enteré de que el señor Miguel Gallardo había fallecido de un cáncer de riñón poco después de terminar el documental.

La producción de este documental fue realizada en conjunto con la televisora española para darle difusión y concienciar a la población sobre el autismo y una vez que fuera presentada en cine sería transmitida en la televisión, lamentablemente la recaudación en el cine fue mínima incurriendo en perdidas.

Es un documental muy lindo que mueve sentimientos, no es necesario tener un familiar o conocido con esta condición para sentir empatía con la historia, creo que es un documental que debería ser transmitido en varios países y traducido a diferentes idiomas, mirarlo te abre la mente sobre esta condición.

Watching films about autism is very different from watching a documentary featuring people who live with the condition, as it shows you what life is really like for them and the difficulties they face.

Personally, I prefer watching documentaries about science or high-profile criminal cases; however, ‘María and I’ (documentary) caught my attention because it deals with autism, and I feel as though I have lived with someone with this condition who has not been formally diagnosed as such, which has been a difficult and painful experience. I think the main reason I watched it was to discover how many similarities there are with my relative.

Synopsis

‘María y yo’ is a documentary based on the life of María, a young woman with autism, and her relationship with her family, particularly her father, who tells the whole story through comics he created himself, which helped him communicate with María; these drawings served as a bridge to understanding María and making himself understood. Throughout the documentary, we follow a holiday trip during which María experiences boarding a plane and going to the seaside; there, we can observe her reactions to the world and her daily routine with her father.

The footage includes interviews with María’s mother, her teachers and some relatives. It highlights the parents’ confusion upon realising that something was wrong when María was a baby and, once she was diagnosed, the pain of knowing that she would never be a ‘normal’ and independent person. The burden placed on the shoulders of the parents or relatives of someone with this condition is immense, suffocating and exhausting.

María’s mother, in tears, recalls those early years, when she had to give up work to devote herself entirely to caring for her daughter. We also see one of María’s sisters helping her with her personal hygiene routine, such as bathing, shaving her legs, setting the table, or lifting her plate and washing it.

In María’s case, as she is on the autism spectrum, the simplest tasks require three times the effort; walking and maintaining her balance is a Herculean task. However, however difficult it may be for those caring for someone with autism, these people learn to love unconditionally and their greatest virtue is patience, which they develop through every challenge they face.

María’s father wrote a novel of the same name that inspired the documentary, offering the viewer a respite from the harsh reality, as the film shifts from conventional video to depicting life through a comic strip, just as María would see it.

The documentary not only shows what María’s day-to-day life is like, but also her personality and the qualities and skills she possesses: her excellent memory for recognising faces and names even if she has only seen and spent a moment with someone; her moments of isolation; and the pleasure she takes in gazing at grains of sand from the sea or playing with coloured paper. It depicts a day at school and the activities they take part in.

To round off the documentary, they celebrated María’s birthday, to which her family, friends and neighbours were invited. It was a great party with lots of people, food and music. María looks happy enjoying everything, and I’m struck by how much this little girl has come on – she’s very sociable, accepts hugs naturally and isn’t bothered by noise; I suppose this is down to all the work her family has done with her and the resources they’ve had access to. I can say that this little girl has a busier social life than I do 🤣.

Final thoughts

The relationship María had with her father was beautiful, full of respect, love and understanding. Sadly, her father’s greatest fear came true: dying before his daughter. Whilst writing this review, I did a bit of research and found out that Mr Miguel Gallardo had died of kidney cancer shortly after the documentary was completed.

This documentary was produced in collaboration with a Spanish television channel to raise its profile and raise public awareness of autism; once it had been released in cinemas, it was due to be broadcast on television, but, sadly, box-office takings were minimal, resulting in a loss.

It is a very beautiful and moving documentary; you don’t need to have a family member or acquaintance with this condition to empathise with the story. I think it’s a documentary that should be broadcast in several countries and translated into different languages; watching it really opens your mind to this condition.
