[Movie] Pitch Perfect - An Acapella Review

To me, Pitch Perfect was a new thing from opening because there wasn't anything in the title to let me know what it was about..... Pitch Perfect, Okay, Perfect pitch, So what? Is this a musical documentary? Is this some kind of talent show film? I didn't know, I was on the verge of giving up, but I still watched it and at some point in the first half hour I got it, what this movie is, and what makes it so popular.

It's an acapella film, but before you roll your eyes like (I nearly did) and a college acapella film at that, because it works. It really works.

The story follows Beca, this girl who does not want to be in college, does not want to follow her father's plan, does not want to do anything except make music her own way ,she gets pulled into this all-girl acapella group called the Barden Bellas almost by accident, and from there the movie takes you through everything the clashes, the friendships, the competition, the mess that comes with putting strong personalities in one room and asking them to sing together.

Anna Kendrick plays Beca, and she is the kind of character that is easy to root for because she is not trying too hard ,she is a little distant, a little stubborn, very talented, and she grows in a way that feels natural rather than forced, you do not get that annoying movie moment where someone changes completely overnight, she shifts gradually and by the end you actually feel it.

The characters around her are where a lot of the comedy lives, Fat Amy played by Rebel Wilson is the one that will make you laugh the most, Every single time she opened her mouth I was not ready, She has this energy that is completely unserious and it balances the movie perfectly, without her this film would have been too straight-faced for its own good.

The music is genuinely good,I was not expecting that, Acapella arrangements of songs I already knew but done in a way that felt fresh and actually impressive, There is a particular riff off scene where different groups battle each other using song mashups and that scene alone made the whole movie worth it for me, It is creative, it is fun, and it is the kind of thing that makes you rewind just to watch again.

The only problem I had was the romance subplot; it wasn't that bad, but it just didn't seem to be as interesting as the other parts of the story, and it was introduced very early on, Every time the movie slowed down to focus on that side of things I was waiting for it to go back to the music and the group drama, the real heart of this film is the Bellas themselves their tension, their differences, their journey to actually becoming a team, that is what keeps you watching.

But even so, Pitch Perfect is a really fun movie, it's funny without ever trying to be an actual comedy, it has got songs in it without trying to be a traditional musical, and it's got heart at the end without having to break your heart down by the end of the film.

I was entering into it blind and I left pretty fulfilled, it doesn't happen all the time, but if you haven't seen it, watch it, But if you have seen it, you already know what I mean, if you saw it, and didn't like it, well i'm not sure we can be friends.... Lol.
