[Movie] (Obsession) Not a Love Story, but a Story of Selfishness and Control

Hello everyone, today I would like to discuss about Obsession which I have been rooting for a long time. Before I go any further, I should warn you that this review contains major spoilers, so stop reading now if you haven't watched the movie yet. I personally think it's one of the best I have recently watched. I am so excited to share about it. Although, I have a busy schedule still I managed to have some time for this movie. I wanted to share my review about it because I have seen many people having misconception about it. I think most of them had only seen the trailer and from reels and they decided to judge it.
I don't think anyone who has watched the movie thoroughly would call it cringe or anything like that. I would ask them to re-watch it because they probably couldn't understand the theme of the movie. So, let me clear it for you guys. I hope after reading my point of view then you can understand it more better.

So, let's talk about the characters, there's a guy who's name is Bear he is pretty introvert you can say that. Like I have seen he is awkward, he is not so confident and doesn't know how to express himself. On the other hand we have Nikki who is nonchalant, she's like a free bird. She is a great friend of bear and as the story progress you can see that how Nikki is so comfortable around Bear. Ian is their common friend and to be honest, I found him as one of the most irritating person in the whole story. There's another important character which is Sarah, I think she was good from her side.
In the beginning of the story Bear shared to Ian how he felt about Nikki. The expressions on Ian's face seemed like he didn't want that to happen. Which was pretty suspicious and I had my eyes on him. I think Bear had fallen for Nikki because she was kind to Bear. He was so awkward type of person so I think he was not able to make any good friends. For the first time someone had treated him so nicely that's what made him think that he has a crush on her. I had noticed one thing at his home every furniture looked from old times and it was a bit weird because he was a young man yet he never decorated the house, maybe he was into old stuff. I don't know but his cat dying like that made me think that he was super careless. As a cat lover I disliked this part of the movie. From the very first scene, the movie gave me an unsettling feeling.

Furthermore, Bear had bought the One Wish Willow on the day of their trivia night with friends. Because nikki had lost her crystal necklace earlier so Bear wanted to give her something as a gift. He couldn't find any necklace so he bought the One Wish Willow instead. Which was supposed to be her gift. So what was this One Wish Willow exactly? The seller had explained to bear about it. That it will make your one wish come true and many people left complaints about it some of them said it worked and some of them said it doesn't work at all. Yet, Bear decided to buy it.
So, on trivia night Bear finally tries to confess his feelings but Ian keeps getting in the way every time he gets the chance. Which made it obvious that Ian had some sort of things for Nikki and that is why he did not want Bear to confess his feelings. I was already annoyed because if he Ian feelings for Nikki then he could tell his friend right? But what did he do? Trying to make things worse between Bear and Nikki. Anyway, I remember Ian had told Bear to call her "Freaky Nikki" which she always disliked. So it's obvious that he wanted Bear to make Nikki angry. Later when Bear gave Nikki a ride to her house, before leaving Nikki asked if he wanted to confess something but Bear couldn't say it. Also in the end with no brain cells he decided to call her "Freaky Nikki". It felt like I never had seen a stupid guy like him lol.

Our Bear decided to break One Wish Willow instead of confessing his feelings to Nikki. He wished that Nikki would love him more than anyone else in the world. After that while he was still in the car Nikki suddenly came back which was creepy. Because I wasn't expecting that thing was supposed to work. From what I have seen in the trailer I thought Nikki was a possessive girlfriend who was not in her right mind. But when I watched it I could realize that she wasn't like that from the beginning. It was bear who wished for it and it became the reality. Nikki began to date Bear and he had no self doubts. There was some events where Nikki was shocked to see herself with Bear. But suddenly she switched her personality. Bear ignored all of it because he was loving the attention Nikki gave. He was yearning for this kind of relationship.
From what I have seen I could tell that Nikki had no control over her body anymore, she was locked in somewhere which was not clearly shown in the movie. But it was said that she had been locked away and someone else is doing all of the things. Bear started to feel suffocated the moment he realized that he wouldn't be able to hang out with his friends and have fun without Nikki. Because that began to disrupt Nikki's behaviour. One of the creepiest scene was when Bear was asleep and Nikki was standing in a corner. That truly scared me to see her like that. Even after all of these weird behaviour, Bear did not try to find a solution or do anything about it.

Bear was fine as long as Nikki was there with him, he didn't care if Nikki was getting weirder day by day. It was seen that Sarah had some sort of feelings for Bear. Not only that Ian and Sarah both found their relationship was wrong. And when she told him that Nikki always had seen him as a brother even that didn't stop him. Bear pretended everything was fine between him and Nikki and which wasn't entirely the truth. I would say he is one of the most selfish and coward person I have ever seen. He did realize at some point that it wasn't going the right way, he decided to contact the One Wish Willow but he didn't ask to break the wish instead he asked that if he could renew it lol. Like seriously! He still wanted Nikki to be in love with him even if it's not her real self.
To be honest, this movie felt like a clear rage bait, every second he was on screen, I wanted to slap Bear and make him come to his senses. I don't think anyone who loves someone would want to see them suffer. While the obsessive version of herself was asleep she pleaded with him to kill her. You know what bear said? "What's so bad about being with me?" Like wtf dude, are you on some drugs? He was so self obsessed he didn't care about what Nikki was going through. There was one scene where I could tell Bear had some feelings for Sarah as well. It proved that he never loved Nikki, he loved the way she treated him. Also, even he got everything from Nikki he was still interested in Sarah. Even after finding out that Ian and Nikki had been having an affair, he still didn't consider ending the relationship.

When Nikki started to murder his friends then he decided to do something about it. He could do only two things one was to make a new wish but one wish per person, another was to kill himself which would free Nikki. But he couldn't make someone else make wishes for him so he decided to make Nikki make that wish. But it wasn't that easy, so he decided to end his life in the bathroom. He swallowed the very pills that had caused his cat's death. And guess what he had changed his mind in the end! Bud didn't have the courage to do that as well! I was extremely pissed, I thought in the end he had at least thought of giving freedom to Nikki but NO! He didn't, but guess what? He got exactly what he deserved. As he desperately tried to vomit up the pills, Nikki had that One Wish Willow and made her own wish—that he would love her just as obsessively as she loved him. That's why he suddenly stops trying to throw up the pills he walks out of the bathroom and shares one final kiss with Nikki.
Nikki was about to end her life but she came to her senses the moment Bear died. Her life was not any better even if she stayed alive. Because she already had murdered two people. I think there's no chances for her survival because police would catch her soon. So, would you still say this movie is about a girl who was obsessed? It's more about an irresponsible, self obsessed guy who only cared about his comfort and he destroyed the lives of the people around him. Nikki was never to blame as she didn't have control over her own body and willingness. I feel the biggest villain for this movie is Bear. So, I hope no one would blame Nikki after knowing the actual facts.
Even though it was a small budget film, I think they had hired great actors and actresses who had done their best. I think it wouldn't be this good if it wasn't the casts. My personal favourite would be (Inde Navarrette)Nikki because of how she changes her behaviour so quick, according to the characters need. So, yeah I loved the movie and I hope people would love it as well and not think of it negatively. I wouldn't call it a typical horror movie, but it definitely delivers psychological horror.

Wow, you gave it a 100/100! It must be amazing. I haven't seen it yet, but it's been recommended to me. I didn't read the spoiler warning, but you've encouraged me to watch it. I've already seen several recommendations.
Sorry, I had mentioned it in the very first of the topic. Didn't meant to spoil it for you. 😭 Anyway, you can still watch it. There are so many things I have not mentioned. It can be rewatched many times because it was too good. I hope you watch it in your free time!

Most people like ,either partners, looking for a control in their relationship that becomes toxic later. More on obsession to understand how challenging it is for the partner being controlled.
That's absolutely truly, it's very common.

Thanks for the pizza 🍕
Oh, dear. 100/100 for a movie you consider rage bait is frying me. But I think I understand.😭
I feel same way reading through too. It's like a triangle of people in love with each other but not adult enough to say. I wonder how the movie would've turned out if Bear was actually bold enough and not stupid. And Ian? Clearly not a fan of his already.
The ending feels quite triggering and sad at the same time. I believe it could've been better. Lovely review, Zoe!
Rage bait in a good way 😛, cuz I really liked whatever was happening as I could feel my emotions depending on the situations. I think if bear had confessed he would get accepted or rejected but then there would be no movie 🤣. I just hate his character but he's really handsome lol.

"Then there would be no movie."
Haha. You're right ASF. I'll look their characters up online. Thanksss.
Thank you for the support 😊
The real villain is Bear; many people still haven't grasped this.
The movie is top-notch, one of the best of the year. I personally enjoyed it a lot. Simple, but with very well-executed horror.
Yep, even if it's not fully based on horror like as we see ghosts in other movies. There was no ghost but we can sense some psychological horror in it.

How is Bear the villain here? Dude is a victim, he didn't know it was going to go like that. Also Nikki whenever it was her or some demon possessing her, it was also very cringe how she acted. But Bear inability to act shouldn't be something planned or malevolent, he was definitely a weak person who let people take decisions for him, which also happen with women all the time. But nobody goes about calling them villains for acting like that. I was also expecting Bear to finally man up and put a line with Nikki which will turn her into a stalker, or even a killer. But nothing like that happened.

I think this movie is highly cringe mainly because the way Nikki behaved. Having incredible mood swings and making the whole place fell uncomfortable specially the viewer. She acted insane and that was clear to see. Hurting herself, hurting others and even obsessively grabbing to Bear.
Do you know what made her do that?
Does it matter? Doing something cringe is cringe because you did it. Regardless of the reason you did it.
If she was dunking from the free throw line because she was under the influence of a demon or drugs, it will still be amazing.
Did you read my whole post? 🤔
I did, what's your point? You argue the circumstances, but I argue the actions itself.
If someone has no control over their own body, can they really be blamed? Nikki was the victim. Bear made the wish and that's why everything happened. She never loved Bear romantically, she saw him as a brother and was already with Ian. The real Nikki even begged Bear to kill her while the other Nikki was asleep. I'm not trying to change your opinion, just pointing out what actually happened in the story, because I think you may have misunderstood those parts.
That's irrelevant to her doing cringe stuff. Is not like Bear wished for her to act like that. I wonder if you know what cringe is?
Is when you are embarrassed for what other people do. She did stuff over the top that not bear or anyone asked her to do. Those over the top expressions, the screaming in public, the hurting herself in front of everyone. There is no validation for doing those things.
I think it's also a metaphor to some relationships, people act over the top. And there is no justification to do that just because you were with someone else, and you feel it manipulated you. At the end you are an adult and is your reasonability for your actions.
It's not irrelevant.
She did everything against her will because it wasn't really her making those choices the wish took control over her body. Everything comes at a cost. Bear could have simply confessed to Nikki and accepted whatever answer she gave but instead he made a wish using something evil.
It's like making a deal with Satan. Do you think something like that would grant a wish without demanding something in return? Ian wished for money and he died the next moment. The One Wish Willow grants your wish but it always takes something from you in exchange.
Nikki never liked Bear romantically. Without the wish, she would never have dated him because she was already with Ian. The only reason her behaviour was cringe or whatever was because of the One Wish Willow and Bear was the one who made that wish.
If someone is possessed by an evil entity, would we blame the victim? Everything Nikki did that seemed cringe or out of character happened because Bear made that wish. It's no different from someone being controlled through black magic instead of acting of their own free will.
That doesn't mean she didn't do cringe stuff.
If she pop a balloon against her will, it will still make noise. If I say, 'wow that balloon is loud', it doesn't matter if she was not herself... understand? I mean is not that hard to understand right?
Even a step further, if you did something, you are still responsible even if it's against your will. If someone takes your hand and put it on the stove, the stove will still burn your had, regardless of how willing you were putting the hand there.
Being possessed or forced is not that different from not meaning something. You still are held accountable in real life.
If you were texting, or drunk or high, and you ran over someone, you still are held accountable.
Back to the example, if you did something that is cringe, regardless if it was yourself, it still cringe.
She would still be held accountable for it because of someone else's actions. That's obvious from the ending of the movie, she's left with nothing and the police are most likely searching for her because she killed people. But who caused all of that? It was Bear. That's the point I've been trying to make.
Of course, things like this don't exist in real life, so it's different. It's a fictional story built around the idea of a girl who loses control of her own body. I never claimed she didn't do anything, because even if she wasn't in control, it was still her physical body carrying out those actions. My point is that we should look at the root cause and ask who actually caused it in the first place.
But all that is irrelevant, as I am judging the actual action. Her expression is cringe, regardless if she wasn't herself, it still her face. Maybe someone else wouldn't look cringe, but it was her face in the end, and it did.
If you ever watch that movie, final destination, none of the people involved 'meant' to kill each other. But in the end, they still do it. And people still dead. The action was done, and the result won't change because of the intentions.
Yeah, I got it now. I was only saying that everything has it's own reason. Something happens for a reason. If you don't want to see the reason then it's understandable. I think her reaction was similar to "Smile" like they keep smiling like a creep.
Tbh, finally destination is one of my favourite 😁. I just love to watch crazy stuff.
