G20
I was actually looking to watch a series when a friend recommended this movie to me, and I decided to give it a try. After watching the trailer I just knew I was going to give it a try. When I think of this movie, I think white house down mixed with feminine power. I bring you G20.
PLOT
Amidst battling with her teenage daughter, the United States president, Danielle Sutton, has a new idea that would help make the world better. A new digital currency that unites all the nations of the world. She plans to pitch the idea at the latest G20 summit to the leaders of the most powerful nations in the world.
Unfortunately, things go awry as the summit is infiltrated by terrorists who hijack the event. Using her military training, she and a small group consisting of an old first lady of Korea, the UK prime minister, the head of the International Monetary Fund, and her bodyguard must find a way to foil the terrorists' plans.
MY THOUGHTS
I already said it in the intro, White House Down, but this time our protagonist is female. That is the best way to describe this movie.
Let me get into the nitty gritty. The actors, first of all. The cast of the movie was packed with familiar faces, and this is one of the reasons I watched this movie in the first place. Our protagonist, Viola Davis, is already known for playing powerful women like she did in The Woman King, and here she's playing the president of the United States. Then we have her husband and her daughter, Anthony Anderson and Marsai Martin, who are known popularly for their roles as Father and Daughter in the series Black-ish. They pretty much play the same characters but in a different movie. And of course, our Antagonist, Anthony Starr, who is popularly known for his role as Homelander in The Boys. He also fell into the "same character, different movie" category.
When I watched the trailer, though, despite wanting to watch it, seeing a black female President of the United States, I was already saying to myself, "hope this isn't going to be one of those 'woke' movies where they start making things about gender and colour." It was a relief to watch it and see that it wasn't.
You would think, despite all of this, it would hamper how enjoyable the movie was, but that wasn't the case. It was a very interesting movie.
The action was good, the special effects top notch, the actors made it enjoyable, there were surprisingly no cringe or over the top moments (they did the whole action woman thing really well), there were a couple of plot holes here and there, but the same can be said of the majority of action movies. They're small enough to be ignored.
I also liked the fact that cryptocurrency (Bitcoin) was a part of the story. Even though they somewhat fed into the narrative that Bitcoin is used by terrorists, I am pretty sure a couple people would at least be interested in how crypto works after seeing that movie.
It is a movie I'd recommend to anyone who likes action. It's that type of movie that gives you fond memories whenever you remember it, but then you wouldn't be able to remember all the details after a while. I would give this movie a 7.5/10
