Big Momma's House

What do you do when life gets serious and you face heartbreaks, loss, or any other mood dampener? Most of us may indulge in sad movies and even sadder songs. Because what’s the best way to get rid of sadness if not fully wallowing in it?

But then there are the others who take advantage of that to see every single comedic thing they can lay their hands on. From movies to podcasts, TikTok, and down to YouTube videos. I guess I fall in the latter category. Re-watched a comedy/crime film that I’d seen several years ago, and decided to share it with you all today.

Big Momma’s House (2000)

Malcolm and Maxwell are FBI agents who have been assigned to track an escaped convict who had been serving a life sentence for murder and armed robbery, Lester Vesco. Lester’s girlfriend, Sherry, who works at the bank, is suspected to have colluded with him, so Malcolm and Maxwell unanimously agree to monitor Sherry’s estranged grandmother’s house. The infamous Big Momma, an elderly African-American woman living in Georgia.

In the course of stalking Big Momma’s house, the agents learn that she will be leaving for a few weeks to take care of an ill friend. To gain more discreet information as to whether or not Sherry is guilty, they seize this opportunity to create a prosthetic mask and body suit, so that Malcolm can assume Big Momma’s identity and infiltrate the household. Things seem to go seemingly well for the agents until Malcolm becomes fond of Sherry and her son. Then, they don’t.

This movie is a breeze, and set in a time where things were much more easier, and the audience still had a lot of humour left in them to appreciate good comedy movies. I doubt this feat would be too achievable if it were acted now. I love that it also had an incorporation of crime, even though that in itself did not really show up till the ending of the movie. Defeating the purpose of “crime” being slated as its genre.

Except for its amazingly humorous feel, there’s not much to really go by. I appreciate films starring Nia Long, just cause I believe she’s an amazing actress, and Martin Lawrence as Malcolm was the icing on the cake. I would have honestly loved to see more of Terrence Howard, who starred as Lester. He is quite the charming actor and a perfect eye-candy, but he only featured in the last few scenes, which was odd and unsatisfactory.

Like I said, this film isn’t one to criticize but rather one to just get you out of a foul mood. There’s humour in its absurdity, and I guess that’s what truly makes a comedy film humorous and worth watching. The ability to appeal to the audience even when it’s absurd. Happy New Week, everyone, from Cine Tv Community. Hope you enjoy!

I fall in this category. I prefer something to make me laugh while being sad than falling in for sad movies or songs. That makes the situation worse for me.

This must be an interesting and guessing movie.

I watched this movie back then and I loved everything about it. The humour and comedy weren't cringe, rather they were just the right amount.
I think I'm part of the second group above. I enjoy listening to sad music and watching sad movies, when I'm sad.
