Journey To Tartarus
Are you a fan of adventure, do you love films about pirates and are you thrilled with them being the main character? Well say hello to Sinbad - legend of the seven seas.
Imagine a world surrounded by water bodies with the sea being the major transport route. This same world is kept balanced by a magical book known as The Book of Peace which needs to always stay open else the world is thrown into complete chaos. This is the type of setting Pirates thrive and our main character happens to be one of the most successful pirate with a competent crew to solidify his infamous title.
Meet Sinbad- Scourge of the seven seas. Sinbad and his crew are on route for a mission with a reward so large it could put an end to their entire life piracy Steal the Book of Peace and sell to any of the twelve cities offering the highest price. Having spotted the ship transporting the book, the entire crew led by their captain Sinbad launches a full on attack but is surprised when he discovers that the person in charge of transporting the Book was none other than his childhood best friend Proteus who is also the prince of Syracuse ( the very city the book was being transported to).
Regardless of this whole new information, Sinbad still intends on stealing the book but before he could go ahead with his plans they are attacked by a sea monster sent by Eris- goddess of mischief and discord. Both the pirates and the royal navy work together to defeat the beast and as it makes its last struggle, the beast pulls Sinbad into the sea to meet its master Eris.
The goddess strikes a deal with Sinbad offering him the world if he steals the book for her further reassuring him that deities are bound by their words which he agrees to.
Sinbad and a few of his men walks into Syracuse with the intention of stealing the book there. They start to blend in with the crowd and Sinbad meets up with his old friend Proteus ( ooh did I also mention Proteus is the crown prince of Syracuse??? Yeah his cool like that) While they were catching up, Proteus introduces his fiancee to Sinbad which for some reason changes his mind about stealing the Book.
Seeing that Sinbad won't pull through with the plan, Eris steals the book herself using Sinbad's face leading to him being captured and sentenced to death. The prince Proteus offers to take his place while Sinbad goes off to the realm of Eris - Tartarus to bring back the book to prove his innocence and if Sinbad doesn't come back he will be killed in his place.
The crew sets off to Tartarus thanks to some convincing from Marina (Proteus's fiancee) who bribed her way aboard the ship. Their first obstacle are sirens along a rocky path with seductive voices which they intend to use lure everyone on the ship into a painful death but thanks to Marina and their trusty dog spike ( who were not affected by the song) the entire ship was able to evade this temptation with few ship damages here and there.
Fixing the ship takes next priority and so they head off to an island to get the necessary equipments comprising of mostly wood and tree sap. The island turns out to be a huge fish with a massive eye bulb on its head but thankfully nobody was hurt.
Sinbad even uses the fish to their advantage hooking the ship to one of its fins while it swims off quickly.
Next Eris freezes a vast portion of the sea the ship was sailing on, sending this time a monstrous bird to sabotage their mission.
It abducts Marina in the process forcing Sinbad to go after it, rescue the princess, kills the bird and automatically shattering the ice in the process.
Finally they arrive the gates of Tartarus which is at the edge of the world. This is my favorite scene in the entire film as it displays the level of trust every member of the team has for their captain even in the face of certain death.
Sinbad and Marina crosses over into Tartarus and are confronted by Eris. She vows to give Sinbad the book if he answers one of her questions honestly which he agrees to do. She asks him to tell her if he would return back to Syracuse to face judgement if he doesn't get the book from her and he answers Yes an answer Eris finds dishonest thus sending him back empty handed.
Sinbad returns back to Syracuse just in time to take back his place death from his friend but before he is executed, Eris appears back in the kingdom as she promised to return the book if Sinbad goes back to the kingdom empty handed.
Sinbad's innocence becomes obvious to the entire city obtaining a pardon in the process. He sails off for more adventures on the sea with the lovely Marina by his side.
Overall I'll give the animated film a solid 8.5 as it was truly interesting and posseses that rewatch factor even after years of release.

You reminded me of one of the best animated movies I saw when I was a kid. That Pirates of the Caribbean vibe with fantasy and magic is fantastic. One of my favorites, without a doubt.
Good recommendation.
