Demon Slayer Infinity Castle — Is It redefining animation and creating a global phenomenon?

You might not know it, but this anime is breaking records worldwide and becoming a new phenomenon for all ages. Maybe, like me, you're not into this kind of content anymore. You'd rather watch more serious stuff and think you're "too old for cartoons." But it's worth taking a look at a story that's generating a ton of buzz and doing some interesting things that are worth a closer look.

Quizás no estás enterado pero este anime está batiendo récords a nivel mundial y se está convirtiendo en un nuevo fenómeno entre todas las edades. Quizás al igual que yo ya no te atrae este tipo de contenido, prefieres ver cosas más serias, ya no estás para caricaturas, pero no está demás dar un vista a una historia que da mucho que hablar y está haciendo un par de cosas interesantes que valen la pena analizar.

This movie is the continuation of the anime series, which has four seasons out so far. The creators decided to animate the final part of the story and release it as three films, so Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle will be a three-part series. I went to see this movie at the theater with my teenage son, who has seen all four previous seasons. I knew nothing about the story, but I really enjoyed anime when I was younger, so I didn't mind going. To get ready, I watched a summary online and caught up as best I could.

Está película es la continuación de la serie animada que ha sacado 4 temporadas. Sus creadores decidieron animar la parte final de la historia y presentarla como tres películas, así que Demon Slayer Castillo infinito tendrá tres partes. Fui a ver esta película en el cine con mi hijo adolescente que ha visto las 4 temporadas previas, pero yo no sabía nada de la historia, pero disfrute mucho en anime en mi juventud, así que no me molestaba ir a verla, para eso me ví un resumen en internet y me puse al día lo mejor que pude.

I'm not going to talk about the plot or the story; it's long and pretty complex. If you want to get into it, there are great summaries online made by experts that I recommend. Personally, I want to focus on the animation style because it's something I've been studying. I'm also fascinated by the global phenomenon it has become, which reminds me of what Dragon Ball was back in its day.

No voy hablar de la historia y trama, es extensa y algo compleja, si quieres conocerla hay buenos resúmenes en internet hechos por expertos que te recomiendo ver, personalmente quiero enfocarme en el estilo de animación, debido a que es algo que he estado estudiando. También me llama la atención el fenómeno mundial en lo que se ha convertido, recordándome lo que fue en su momento Dragón Ball.

As for the animation, I'm really impressed by how well the 2D and 3D (CGI) graphics are integrated. The 3D is handled incredibly well and helps highlight the characters, who are drawn in 2D. You can see that the fire is made in 3D, as are the snowflakes and even the wood particles when a piece of wood is broken. The lighting, shadows, and camera movement show a fantastic job of composition, which is definitely worth a deep dive.

En cuanto a la animación me impresiona mucho lo bien integrados que están los gráficos 2D y 3D (CGI), esto último sorprendentemente bien manejados que ayudan a resaltar los personajes que son dibujados o 2D. Se puede ver que el fuego es hecho en 3D, los copos de nieve e incluso las partículas de madera que salen al esta ser rota. La iluminación y sombras, el movimiento de las cámaras habla de un muy buen trabajo de composición, digno de ser estudiado a fondo.

Something else that really caught my eye are the lines in the base animation of the characters—they're very bold, with black lines that are thicker than usual. This is interesting because if you pause any video of the anime, you'll notice that even in fast-moving scenes like fight sequences, the characters don't get blurred. Only the backgrounds or scenery are blurred to make sure our eyes are locked on the character, which I think is a very clever choice.

Algo que me llamó mucho la atención son los trazos en la animación base de los personajes, está muy marcados, incluso con líneas negras más gruesas de lo habitual. Esto es interesante porque si pausas cualquier video del anime, notaras que aun en las escenas de movimientos rápidos como las luchas, no hay disposición del personaje, no se maneja el desenfoque en ellos, solo en el fondo o escenarios para que nuestra vista se fije en el personaje, algo que me parece muy inteligente.

I believe this brilliant animation is the foundation of the anime's success. While the manga was already super famous, the animation has brought in many more fans, who have packed movie theaters all over the world. In Japan, pre-sale tickets for the first ten minutes sold out in an instant, and to date, it has grossed over $200 million at the box office. It's believed to have already surpassed $80 million in Latin America and the United States.

Creo que esta genialidad en animación es la base del éxito del anime, aunque ya su manga es altamente famoso, la animación ha traído a muchos más fanáticos, quienes han desbordado los cines de muchas partes del mundo, en Japón en solo los primeros diez minutos se agotaron las entradas de preventa, logrando recaudar hasta la fecha mas de 200 millones de dólares en taquilla. Se creen que en Latinoamérica y Estados Unidos ya superó los 80 millones.

In my country, despite all the limitations, it was amazing to see how the movie theaters filled up, mostly with young people. Some were dressed as characters from the story, others had makeup on, and the hype was unlike anything I've seen before. It was tough to watch a nearly three-hour movie with teens screaming every time a character appeared, but there was also no shortage of applause and even tears. So, are we witnessing a new global phenomenon?

En mi pais con todas las limitaciones que hay, fue impresionante ver como las salas de los cines se llenaban en su mayoría de jovencitos, algunos vestidos como personajes de la historia, otros maquillados y con un hype no antes visto. Fue difícil ver una película de casi 3 horas con jovencitos pegando gritos cada vez que un personaje aparecía, los aplausos e incluso las lágrimas no faltaron ¿estamos entonces ante un nuevo fenómeno mundial?
