Hamnet - From Boredom to Tears [ENG/SPA]

I finally gave in to all the positive reviews and watched this film. I was never a Shakespeare fan; I grew up in a household full of English literature, and he was the one who attracted me the least—quite the opposite of how I felt about Dickens or Tolkien. Plus, I haven’t been enjoying film adaptations lately, and to be honest, I didn’t have much faith in Chloé Zhao. But I decided to give it a chance after doing some digging and finding out that both the novel and the film shift the spotlight away from the Bard and onto his family.

Finalmente cedí ante tanta crítica positiva y vi esta película. Nunca fui fan de Shakespeare; en casa crecí con literatura de autores ingleses y él era el que menos me atraía, todo lo contrario a lo que me pasaba con Dickens o Tolkien. Además, las adaptaciones cinematográficas últimamente no me están gustando y, para ser franco, no le tenía mucha fe a Chloé Zhao. Pero decidí darle una oportunidad tras investigar un poco y enterarme de que tanto la novela original como el film le restan protagonismo al bardo para dárselo a su familia.

Why don’t I like Shakespeare? You might wonder. Well, I think the story portrays the reason quite well: I’ve always seen him as selfish—a bad husband and an absent father. In my ignorance, that was my perspective, because while he was finding success in London, his family was "stuck" in the countryside. Later, I learned that Hamlet might have been inspired by the loss of his son, though historically there are no documents to fully back that up.

Luego aprendí que Hamlet pudo estar inspirada en la pérdida de su hijo, aunque históricamente no haya documentos que lo avalen totalmente.

Historical fiction doesn't always hit the mark. For starters, I wasn't sold on them calling Shakespeare’s wife Agnes; I didn’t see the problem with using her real name, Anne Hathaway (though you later find out that’s what those closest to her called her). I also didn’t like her being portrayed as some sort of "forest witch"—a bit cliché for my taste, but I get that it was a way to depict the customs of the time. What I can't deny is that Jessie Buckley’s performance is superb; she becomes the pillar that holds the entire movie together.

Para empezar, no me convenció que llamen Agnes a la esposa de Shakespeare; no entendía el problema con usar su nombre real, Anne Hathaway (aunque luego descubres que así la llamaban en su entorno íntimo). Tampoco me gustó que fuera una especie de "bruja del bosque", un toque un poco cliché para mi gusto, pero entiendo que era la forma de retratar las costumbres de la época. Lo que no puedo negar es que la actuación de Jessie Buckley es soberbia y se convierte en el pilar que sostiene toda la película.

There are some very specific details I learned about after researching the film post-viewing. First, it’s packed with nods to Shakespeare’s various works, which must be a treat for fans. The English is hard to grasp; I had to turn on subtitles and even then, I struggled to keep up. Turns out they speak Elizabethan English, but according to critics, if Shakespearean material is acted well enough, you don’t need to catch every word to feel the emotion.

Hay detalles muy particulares de los que me enteré tras investigar después de verla. Primero, está cargada de guiños a varias obras de Shakespeare, lo cual debe ser un placer para los fans. El inglés es difícil de entender; tuve que activar subtítulos y aun así me costaba seguir el ritmo. Resulta que hablan inglés isabelino, pero según los críticos, si lo relacionado con Shakespeare está bien actuado, no hace falta entender cada palabra para sentir la emoción.

Despite these details, I admit the plot bored me at times. However, I stuck it out until the end because everyone who recommends it promises you'll cry. I won't deny it: it did bring me to tears, but not for the reason everyone says. The moment the actor playing Hamlet dies on stage and Agnes takes his hand, followed by the rest of the audience, felt like a powerful representation of collective grief. In the end, I didn't cry for Shakespeare or his genius, but for that basic human connection: we think we’re different, but we all suffer from the same thing the pain of loss.

A pesar de estos detalles, admito que por momentos la trama me aburrió. Sin embargo, me quedé hasta el final porque todos los que la recomiendan prometen que llorarás. No voy a negarlo: me sacó varias lágrimas, pero no por la razón que todos dicen. El momento en el que el actor que interpreta a Hamlet muere en el escenario y Agnes le toma la mano, seguida por el resto del público, me pareció una buena representación del dolor colectivo. Al final, no lloré por Shakespeare ni por su genio, sino por esa conexión humana tan básica: creemos que somos diferentes, pero todos sufrimos por lo mismo, el dolor de una perdida.
