The Eternaut - A big story, a modest budget with a surprising outcome [ENG/SPA]

Hey everyone, I just finished watching The Eternauta series, and after doing a little more digging into how it was made and the original story, I've got a much stronger opinion to share. This is a Netflix original, produced in Argentina, and stars Ricardo Darín, an actor with a ton of experience who's super respected in his home country and across Latin America. The show is based on the comic books of the same name, written by Héctor Germán Oesterheld back in the 1950s. He used a fictional story to symbolize the oppressive regimes that plagued his country for years.

The Plot Kicks Off

The whole thing starts with a group of friends chilling at a card game in Buenos Aires when suddenly, a heavy snowfall begins, and the power goes out. They figure out in the worst way possible that the snow is lethal when one of the friends, totally desperate, decides to go out for his family and drops dead the moment he touches the snow. This also causes most of the city's population to die within minutes, leaving the city in a bleak, post-apocalyptic mess.

The Characters

Diego Darín plays the character of Juan Salvo, who, along with the rest of his friends, gets trapped in Tano's house. They turn it into a fortress, but Juan, with the help of a gas mask and a bunch of clothes to cover himself, heads out to find his daughter Clara, not knowing where she is in this desolate city. This search Juan goes on shows us the city filled with snow and dead bodies, with no signs of other survivors. However, they're armed because you never know what you might run into.

I thought the characters were really well-developed. I especially liked the character of Tano, the engineer everyone called a hoarder and a know-it-all, but it seemed like he'd been preparing his whole life for a moment like this. His wife used to secretly throw out a lot of the stuff he collected, but in this situation, those things became super valuable – an old shortwave radio, a phone book, oil lamps, stuff nobody uses nowadays but is super useful at the end of the world. I thought the way they developed this character was fantastic; there were times I totally related to him and how misunderstood he was.

The Setting and Production Magic

And don't even get me started on the series' atmosphere – for me, that's what really stands out in this production. They turned Buenos Aires into a winter post-apocalyptic wasteland with only $15 million. Reading online, I learned that the snow was some kind of mix of salt, a polymer that's apparently cellulose, and baby diaper gel. They used that to cover the ground, put it on the actors, and blasted it with fans to simulate blizzards. On top of that genius, they used giant LED screens to simulate views that recreate scenes with CGI, which I think is really smart because it helps the actors get more into the story.

Some people think the series is really slow, but when you watch it all the way through, you get that that's the initial pace because they need to put the viewer into the feeling of desolation they want to convey. That's why there's so much emphasis on good atmosphere to make the end of the world feel real, showing how vibrant it was and then suddenly it collapses, with desolate and creepy images that inspire terror and suspense. For me, they nailed that perfectly. It makes me think about the people in Buenos Aires who live in those areas seeing their city transformed like that – it must have been quite a shock.

What's Next?

The series only has 6 episodes, but they're really well done. Plus, it's pretty wild that the Argentinians managed to make this series with a budget that it cost to make just one episode of The Mandalorian. The ending surprised me a bit and left me wanting to keep watching. I didn't expect this plot twist involving aliens, and the name of the series itself suggests time travel; "Eter-nauta" sounds like "eternal traveler," which also makes me think things are going to take an interesting turn because Juan's character always has visions. Maybe what he's seeing are other moments in time, but we'll see how it all plays out.

El Eternauta - Una gran historia, un presupuesto modesto con un resultado sorprendente

Hola comunidad, he terminado de ver la serie El Eternauta y luego de investigar un poco más sobre el desarrollo y la historia de base, puedo decir que tengo una opinión más sólida para compartir. Es un original de Netflix, de producción Argentina protagonizada por Ricardo Darín, un actor de mucha trayectoria, bastante respetado en su pais y latinoamerica. La historia se basa en las historietas que llevan el mismo nombre, escritas por Héctor Germán Oesterheld en la década de los 50, quien usó una historia de ficción para representar los regímenes opresores que aquejaron a su pais por años.

La trama comienza con un grupo de amigos reunidos en la ciudad de Buenos Aires para jugar las cartas, cuando de repente comienza a caer una fuerte nevada y el servicio eléctrico se ve interrumpido. De la peor forma descubren que la nieve es letal, cuando uno de los amigos desesperado, decide salir por su familia y cae tendido muerto al tener contacto con la nieve, esto provoca también que la mayor parte de la población de la ciudad en cuestión de minutos muera dejando la ciudad sumida en un escenario desolador postapocalíptico.

Diego Darín interpreta el personaje de Juan Salvo, que junto al resto de sus amigos quedan atrapados en la casa de Tano, la cual convierten en una fortaleza, pero Juan con la ayuda de una máscara de gas y mucha ropa para cubrirse, sale en búsqueda de su hija Clara, sin saber dónde se encuentra en una ciudad desolada. Esta búsqueda que emprende Juan nos muestra la ciudad llena de nieve y cadáveres sin señales de otros sobrevivientes, sin embargo, están armados porque nunca saben que se pueden encontrar.

Los personajes me parecen que están muy bien construidos, me gusto mucho el personaje de Tano, el ingeniero que todos calificaban de acumulador y sabiondo, pero que parecía que toda la vida se estuvo preparando para un momento así. Su esposa votaba a escondidas muchas de las cosas que el acumulaba, pero esas cosas en esta situación se volvieron valiosas, un radio viejo de onda corta, una guia telefonica, lámparas de aceite, algo que nadie usa en la actualidad, pero que en el fin del mundo son útiles. Esta idea del desarrollo de este personaje me parecio fantastica, por momentos me sentí identificado con el y lo incomprendido que es.

Ni hablar de la ambientación de la serie, para mi es lo que mas resalta en esta producción, porque con solo 15 millones de dólares convirtieron a la ciudad de buenos Aires en un desierto invernal postapocalíptico. Leyendo en internet supe que la nieve era una especie de mezcla de sal, un polímero que según es celulosa y gel de pañal de bebe, con eso cubrían en suelo, se colocaban sobre los actores y se lanzaba con ventiladores para simular ventiscas. Además de esa genialidad, usaron pantallas led gigantes para simular vistas que recrean escenarios con CGI, lo que me parece muy bueno porque hace que los actores se metan más en la trama.

Hay gente que opina que la serie es muy lenta, pero cuando la ves hasta el final entiendes que ese es el ritmo inicial, porque es necesario colocar al espectador en la sensación de desolación que desean transmitir. Por eso tanto énfasis en una buena ambientación para hacer parecer el fin del mundo real, mostrando lo vivo que estuvo y que de repente colapse, con imágenes desoladores y macabras que inspiran terror y suspenso, para mi eso eso se logró transmitir a la perfección. Esto me hace pensar en las personas de Buenos Aires que viven en esas zonas viendo su ciudad ambientada de esa manera, debió ser toda una sorpresa.

La serie solo tiene 6 episodios pero muy bien hechos, además, es interesante que los argentinos logran hacer esta serie con el presupuesto que costó hacer un solo episodio de The Mandalorian. El final me sorprendió un poco y me dejó con ganas de seguir viendola, no esperaba este giro de trama que todo tiene que ver con extraterrestres, además el nombre de la serie sugiere viajes en el tiempo, Eter-nauta suena a viajero eterno, lo que también me sugiere que las cosas van a dar un vuelco interesante porque el personaje de Juan siempre tiene visiones, quizás lo que esta viendo es otros momentos en el tiempo, pero ya veremos como será.
