Earlier today I was going through some old DVD jackets and I came across this movie and I thought why not write on this?

The Watch is a comedic science fiction film wherein an alien invasion is being played out. The movie stars a couple of actors who are recognized for their comedic features which really raised my expectations. I'm talking about the likes of Ben Stiller, Vince Vaughn, Jonah Hill, and Richard Ayoade. It was directed by Akiva Schaffer, who also directed the movie The Lonely Island fame, with a script co-written by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg.

The Plot

We see an Evan Trautwig character played by Ben Stiller, an obsessively organized and community-minded manager at a Costco in a little town called Glenview. His town is put at risk, so to say, when a night security guard at his store is brutally murdered, seemingly by an unknown assailant. Frustrated by the perceived lack of serious investigation from the local police, Evan decides to take matters into his own hands by forming a neighborhood watch.

He goes about to recruit some guys that would support him in his quest for justice. There’s Bob (Vince Vaughn), a boisterous and also irresponsible father who sees the watch as an excuse for male bonding; we also have Franklin (Jonah Hill), an emotionally unstable and intensely odd police academy reject who carries a weird obsession with knives; and Jamarcus (Richard Ayoade), recently divorced British transplant seeking new social connections.

Initially, the group’s attempts at crime-fighting was more of a joke because they seemed more dedicated to late-night drinking sessions than actual vigilance. They stumble through their patrols, often getting into more trouble than they prevent. But something interesting happens on one of their night patrols. They discover some strange metallic orbs and footprints that looks nothing like that of a human. They soon realize that this means their little town is not just dealing with a some local crime, but has become a ground for alien invasion.

These team of Neighborhood watch
are suddenly tasked with saving not just their neighborhood, but potentially the entire world, at least according to the movie.

My Review

First of all I think they did a perfect combination in these four key characters who featured as the members of the Neighborhood watch. Their chemistry resinated perfectly among themselves and these provided a lot of funny moments. But I think among the four of them the actor that really stole the show was Vince Vaughn. I don't know how that guy does it but he just takes his unique comedic style to another level in most of his films.

I do think the whole alien invasion storyline is a bit generic, but what made it stand out was the comedic aspect of it. The little problem I had with it though is that it seemed to rely heavily on sexual innuendo and profanity, so viewers discretion may be advised concerning this aspect. I think the movie had a greater portion of comedy attributed to it than the sci-fi aspect. The seemed more obvious towards the ending because the final battle with the Neighborhood Watch against the aliens didn't appear to be that intense as expected.

I remember watching the movie more than once though because I found quite interesting and hilarious. My rating for this movie would be 7/10.

This brought back memories. I watched The Watch a while back and totally agree, it's not the strongest SciFi storyline out there, but the comedy and cast chemistry made it so entertaining. Vincent Vaughn really does have a way of stealing the spotlight without even trying too hard. I liked how you broke down the characters and added your honest take on the humor and adult content. It's the kind of movie you watch when you want a good laugh without taking things too seriously 😅

I feel like this is one of those movies that doesn’t try to be too serious and just wants you to have a good time. Not perfect, but memorable for the right reasons. 7/10 sounds fair
