iHostage Movie Review: A Gripping Thriller Based on Real Events
Hello, amazing people of Hive and the cineTV community! It's a great week for us to discuss some of the events that have occurred in our world today. If you don't have time to read the news and your only opportunity is to watch movies like I do, then it's only fair that I provide you with recommendations to help you understand what's happening in our world, along with films based on true stories.
The film we would be reviewing today is titled iHostage
"iHostage" is a film that was released this year on Netflix. It's a true life story about what happened on Feb. 22, 2022, when a 27-year-old armed man entered the Apple Store in Leidseplein, Amsterdam, and held a customer at gunpoint for nearly five hours. Did you see the news? No, I didn't either.
The film follows Ilian, a man who came to the city to look for a job in other to support the home his wife and him are about to buy but things turn sour when he went to the apple store to get an airpod and he became a hostage when a gunman storms into the store, taking him captive.
The interaction between the hostage and the gunman made me understand that the gunman wasn't actually a bad man, but he was mentally unstable. As the situation unfolds, the police engage in serious negotiations with the gunman, who claims to have been wronged by the government. The fact is, we all have been wronged by the government, but that doesn't warrant us to take people hostage. Meanwhile, several employees and people were hiding in a closet and on the upper floors, increasing the stakes.
The actors did a great job portraying the event so well, the fact that most of them started crying after they got home when the incented was over shows how scared they were and how a normal human would react.
I love the fact that the hostage interacted with the gunman, which made us understand more about his mental health, and this made the gunman pitiable and very dangerous. The fact that he helped the hostage, with is drug, requested water for him, and helped him with his phone to talk to his wife shows that he wasn't a bad man, but an unstable man.
The movie sheds light on the complexities of the real-life hostage situation, where the gunman's demands and the police's response are scrutinized. While the film takes some creative liberties, it stays true to the core events. The impact of the movie lies in its ability to convey the tension and fear experienced by the hostages and the police. Another part that got me laughing was the part where the gunman requested a limousine as an escape car.
Overall, "iHostage" is a well-made, interesting film that effectively tells the story of the hostage and the gunman. I love the performance by the actors, the drama, tension, and details that was followed in making the film.
This is why I would recommend the film to anyone, although there aren't so many scene that were shoot in different settings since everything happened in the apple store but the message and act did exceptionally well.
I would rate it an 8/10. Go see it now.
